Emodin suppresses alkali burn-induced corneal inflammation and neovascularization by the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of emodin on alkali burn-induced corneal inflammation and neovascularization. METHODS: The ability of emodin to target vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) was predicted by molecular docking. The effects of emodin on the invasion, migration, and proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were determined by cell counting kit-8, Transwell, and tube formation assays. Analysis of apoptosis was performed by flow cytometry. CD31 levels were examined by immunofluorescence. The abundance and phosphorylation state of VEGFR2,

Differential Diagnosis of Keratoconus Based on New Technologies.

Keratoconus (KC) must be distinguished from other corneal ectatic diseases and thinning disorders for stage-appropriate and suitable management of each condition. The most relevant corneal pathologies that may imitate the tomographic KC pattern are pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD), keratoglobus, posterior keratoconus, and Fuchs-Terrien marginal degeneration (FTMD). In moderate cases of KC, differentiation is typically possible using slit lamp examination and corneal tomography with evaluation of the location of the corneal thinning region. In early cases, however, differential diagnosis ma

Multimodal Imaging Features of Bilateral Choroidal Ganglioneuroma.

PURPOSE: Bilateral choroidal ganglioneuroma is extremely rare, and no cases have been described in the literature. Multimodal images are crucial for its diagnosis. Here, we evaluated multimodal images in the early stage of choroidal ganglioneuroma. METHODS: A 6-year-old boy was recruited who had experienced gradually progressive vision loss and rapidly progressive myopia in both eyes over the past 2 years. His eyes were comprehensively evaluated via slit-lamp microscopy, ultrasound biomicroscopy, swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), fundoscopy, fundus fluorescein angiography, i

Review of Literature on Measurements of Non-invasive Break Up Times, Lipid Morphology and Tear Meniscal Height Using Commercially Available Hand-held Instruments.

UNLABELLED: Purpose/aims: Dry eye is a common multi-factorial disease characterized by tearfilm dysfunction. Diagnosis of dry eye requires documentation of tear status with non-invasive tear break up times (NIBUT), tear meniscal height (TMH), and tearfilm lipid layer. These parameters objectively assess tear stability and indirectly, the functional impact of meibomian gland dysfunction. While it is obvious that portable instrumentation gives broader access than fixed instrumentation, its value would be limited if it is unreliable and its precision and accuracy substantially worse than fixed in

Latest Clinical Approaches in the Ocular Management of Cystinosis: A Review of Current Practice and Opinion from the Ophthalmology Cystinosis Forum.

Cystinosis, a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by intracellular cystine accumulation, occurs in an estimated 1/100,000-200,000 live births. Ocular non-nephropathic cystinosis is typically diagnosed during adulthood, when patients present with corneal crystal deposition and no systemic involvement. Due to the rarity of the condition, diagnosis is often delayed and can have a significant impact on the overall prognosis of the disease. Early diagnosis is therefore imperative to ensure successful treatment and improve quality of life, as most of its clinical manifestations can be prevented

Interferon regulatory factor-1 in flagellin-induced reprogramming: potential protective role of CXCL10 in cornea innate defense against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection.

PURPOSE: We previously showed that pre-exposure of the cornea to Toll-like receptor (TLR)5 ligand flagellin induces strong protective innate defense against microbial pathogens and hypothesized that flagellin modulates gene expression at the transcriptional levels. Thus, we sought to determine the role of one transcription factor, interferon regulatory factor (IRF1), and its target gene CXCL10 therein. METHODS: Superarray was used to identify transcription factors differentially expressed in Pseudomonas aeruginosa-challenged human corneal epithelial cells (CECs) with or without flagellin pret

Comparison of laser and manual removal of corneal epithelium for photorefractive keratectomy.

BACKGROUND: Photorefractive keratectomy relies on precise ablation of cornea stromal tissue to achieve a desired change in refraction. The routine technique for photorefractive keratectomy has been manual debridement of the epithelium prior to performing excimer laser ablation. We investigated whether laser ablation versus manual debridement of the corneal epithelium influences the refractive result. METHODS: A retrospective matched controlled study analyzing the refractive outcome of 46 eyes after excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy was performed. Half of the eyes had the corneal epith
