Global, regional, and national burden of tetanus in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Tetanus is a life-threatening, vaccine-preventable disease. Its incidence decreased substantially following global initiatives such as the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) and Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination (MNTE). Despite these efforts, tetanus elimination has not been achieved, and significant disparities in morbidity and mortality persist across various regions. Therefore, we sought to investigate the global, regional, and national burden of tetanus from 1990 to 2023, using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2023. METHODS: We estimated the glo

Burden and Trend of Craniofacial Cleft in 54 Countries of Africa, 1990-2023 and Forecast to 2030: An Analysis of the Global Burden of Disease 2023 Study.

INTRODUCTION: Craniofacial clefts are among the most prevalent congenital anomalies worldwide and represent a substantial public health burden. Their impact is disproportionately high in Africa, where limited access to timely surgical care and comprehensive health services-including feeding support, speech therapy, and psychosocial care-exacerbates outcomes and contributes to long-term disability and reduced quality of life. This study provides a novel contribution by systematically contextualizing both the fatal and nonfatal burden of craniofacial clefts across 54 African nations, thereby gen

HIV incidence and impact of interventions among female sex workers and their clients in the Middle East and north Africa: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of HIV infection among female sex workers and their clients in the Middle East and north Africa is not well known. We aimed to assess HIV incidence, the contribution of heterosexual sex work networks to these numbers, and the effect of interventions by use of mathematical modelling. METHODS: In this modelling study, we developed a novel, individual-based model to simulate HIV epidemic dynamics in heterosexual sex work networks. We applied this model to 12 countries in the Middle East and north Africa that had sufficient data to estimate incidence in 2020 and the impa

Magnitude of cancer-associated thrombosis in Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Comprehensive data on the epidemiology of cancer-related thrombosis in Africa has been sparse until recently. Thus, this review was aimed to investigate the magnitude of cancer-related thrombosis in Africa. To obtain key articles, comprehensive search was conducted using various databases. A random-effects model was used to determine the pooled magnitude. Heterogeneity across the studies was checked, and publication bias was determined. The pooled magnitude of thrombosis among cancer patients in Africa is 11.65% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 9.02-14.28). Advanced age, comorbidity, and level o

Cancer mortality by country of birth and cancer type in Sweden: A 25-year registry-based cohort study.

Numerous studies have reported lower overall cancer mortality rates among immigrants compared to native populations. However, limited information exists regarding cancer mortality among immigrants based on specific birth countries and cancer types. We used population-based registries and followed 10 million individuals aged 20 years or older in Sweden between 1992 and 2016. The Cox proportional hazard model was used to explore the disparities in cancer mortality by country of birth and cancer type, stratified by gender. Age-standardized mortality rates were also computed using the world standa

Ongoing diphtheria outbreak in Yemen: a cross-sectional and genomic epidemiology study.

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of diphtheria, declared in Yemen in October, 2017, is ongoing. We did a cross-sectional study to investigate the epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological features of the outbreak. METHODS: Probable cases of diphtheria that were defined clinically and recorded through a weekly electronic diseases early warning system (from 2017, week 22, to 2020, week 17) were used to identify trends of the outbreak (we divided the epidemic into three time periods: May 29, 2017, to June 10, 2018; June 11, 2018, to June 3, 2019; and June 4, 2019, to April 26, 2020). National Burden and Trend of Cancer in Ethiopia, 2010-2019: a systemic analysis for Global burden of disease study.

Over the last two decades, we have tracked the national burden of cancer and its trends in Ethiopia, providing estimates of incidence, death, and disability adjusted life years. In Ethiopia, there were an estimated 53,560 (95% UI 52,480-55,540) new incident cases, 39,480 deaths (95% UI 32,640-46,440), and 1.42 million (95% UI 1.16-1.68) DALYs of cancer 2019. Cancer incidence, death, and DALYs counts increased by 32% (95% UI 11-55%), 29% (95% UI 12-44%), and 19% (95% UI - 2 to 44%) between 2010 to 2019, respectively, while age-standardised incidence, death, and DALYs rates increased by 5% (95%

The burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region 1990-2021: a cross-country systematic analysis with forecasts to 2050.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an urgent global crisis and one of the world's most complex challenges. Although there is increasing evidence of its impact on human mortality and morbidity, precise burden estimation has many challenges, and thus far has been elusive for the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Here, we present a comprehensive time-trend analysis of regional and country-level AMR burden estimates in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), between 1990 and 2021, with forecasts up to 2050. METHODS: We estimated deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) attribu

Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 310 diseases and injuries, 1990-2015: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015.

BACKGROUND: Non-fatal outcomes of disease and injury increasingly detract from the ability of the world's population to live in full health, a trend largely attributable to an epidemiological transition in many countries from causes affecting children, to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) more common in adults. For the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015), we estimated the incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for diseases and injuries at the global, regional, and national scale over the period of 1990 to 2015. Impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years: A global decomposition analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, the burden of cancer is increasing. We aimed to assess the impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: We used the decomposition method to estimate the impact of ageing, population growth, and epidemiological change on cancer-related DALYs from 1990 to 2019, stratified by 204 countries/territories and by their sociodemographic index (SDI). This approach separates the net effect of population ageing from population growth and change in age-specific DALY rates. RESULTS: Cancer-related DALYs among indi

A global, regional, and national survey on burden and Quality of Care Index (QCI) of hematologic malignancies; global burden of disease systematic analysis 1990-2017.

BackgroundHematologic malignancies (HMs) are a heterogeneous group of cancers that comprise diverse subgroups of neoplasms. So far, despite the major epidemiologic concerns about the quality of care, limited data are available for patients with HMs. Thus, we created a novel measure-Quality of Care Index (QCI)-to appraise the quality of care in different populations.MethodsThe Global Burden of Disease data from 1990 to 2017 applied in our study. We performed a principal component analysis on several secondary indices from the major primary indices, including incidence, prevalence, mortality, ye

Global, regional, and national trends in routine childhood vaccination coverage from 1980 to 2023 with forecasts to 2030: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Since its inception in 1974, the Essential Programme on Immunization (EPI) has achieved remarkable success, averting the deaths of an estimated 154 million children worldwide through routine childhood vaccination. However, more recent decades have seen persistent coverage inequities and stagnating progress, which have been further amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, WHO set ambitious goals for improving vaccine coverage globally through the Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030). Now halfway through the decade, understanding past and recent coverage trends can help inform and r

Global, regional and national epidemiological trends of multiple myeloma from 1990 to 2021: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease study 2021.

BackgroundMultiple myeloma (MM) is a growing global public health challenge. Known epidemiological data suggest that MM accounts for approximately 10% of all hematologic malignancies and remains the second most common hematologic cancer worldwide. This study utilized data from the 2021 Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) study to evaluate the prevalence, incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and attributable risk factors of MM from 1990 to 2021, and to project future trends for the next 15 years.MethodsGBD 2021 data were analyzed to assess MM's global burden using four key

An update review on Commiphora molmol and related species.

The origins of myrrh and frankincense are traced to the Arabian Peninsula. According to Herodotus (5th century BC): "Arabia is the only country which produces frankincense, myrrh, cassia, and cinnamon.., the trees bearing the frankincense are guarded by winged serpents of small size and various colors." Diodorus Siculus wrote, in the second half of the first century BC, that "all of Arabia exudes a most delicate fragrance; even the seamen passing by Arabia can smell the strong fragrance that gives health and vigor." He also mentioned gold mines so pure that no smelting was necessary. The Magi,

Measuring performance on the Healthcare Access and Quality Index for 195 countries and territories and selected subnational locations: a systematic analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016.

BACKGROUND: A key component of achieving universal health coverage is ensuring that all populations have access to quality health care. Examining where gains have occurred or progress has faltered across and within countries is crucial to guiding decisions and strategies for future improvement. We used the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) to assess personal health-care access and quality with the Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index for 195 countries and territories, as well as subnational locations in seven countries, from 1990 to 2016. Demographic, epidemiological, and health transitions: are they relevant to population health patterns in Africa?

BackgroundStudies of trends in population changes and epidemiological profiles in the developing world have overwhelmingly relied upon the concepts of demographic, epidemiological, and health transitions, even though their usefulness in describing and understanding population and health trends in developing countries has been repeatedly called into question. The issue is particularly relevant for the study of population health patterns in Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, as the history and experience there differs substantially from that of Western Europe and North America, for which these conce
