In the poorest regions of the United States, especially along the Gulf Coast and in South Texas, are a group of endemic parasitic and related infections known as the neglected infections of poverty. Such infections are characterized by their chronicity, disabling features, and disproportionate impact on the estimated 46 million people who live below the U.S. poverty line. Today more Americans live in poverty than ever before in the half-century that the Census Bureau has been recording poverty rates. In association with that poverty, a group of major neglected infections of poverty have emerge

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of anti-Toxocara antibodies in serum from 7-year-old children attending elementary school in Vitória-ES, Brazil and to correlate these antibodies with socio-demographic factors, the presence of intestinal helminths, blood eosinophil numbers, past history of allergy or asthma, and clinical manifestations of helminth infections.
METHODS: The detection of anti-Toxocara antibodies was performed using an ELISA (Cellabs Pty Ltd)on serum from 391 children who had already been examined by fecal examination and blood cell counts. Data f

In developing countries, especially Latin America, neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common cause of epilepsy. Recently, neurotoxocariasis has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of epilepsy. In sub-Saharan Africa data on parasitic disease and epilepsy are scarce. We therefore conducted a study in a rural hospital in northern Tanzania and analysed serum samples for anticysticercal and antitoxocaral antibodies for 40 people with epilepsy (PWE), 20 of whom had confirmed NCC on cranial computed tomography (CT) and 20 healthy individuals. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 11 PWE with NCC lesions on cr

Eosinophilia and intestinal helminths are frequent in children with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) diagnosed in Vitória (Brazil). For these reasons we hypothesized that nematode infection with larvae migrating through the tissues (Ascaris, Strongyloides, Ancylostoma, Necator and Toxocara) may be a predisposing factor for PLA in children. We compared the prevalence of intestinal helminth and Toxocara infection between children with PLA and a control group of children with no evidence of PLA at the Children's Hospital N.S. da Glória in Vitória. From October 1996 to February 1998, 13 children with

The data generated by quantitative enzyme-immunoassay of antibody activity are unsuitable for direct communication from the laboratory to clinician. In this paper, the fundamental problems of reporting ELISA results are highlighted and a list of desirable characteristics is set out for such reports. The available methods for processing ELISA data are reviewed in relation to these ideal requirements and the deficiencies and advantages of each method are discussed. The performance of each method is demonstrated by the use of actual test data from a model ELISA system. No single method has been f

Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati are globally distributed, zoonotic roundworm parasites. Human infection can have serious clinical consequences including blindness and brain disorders. In addition to ingesting environmental eggs, humans can become infected by eating infective larvae in raw or undercooked meat products. To date, no studies have assessed the prevalence of Toxocara spp. larvae in meat from animals consumed as food in the UK or assessed tissue exudates for the presence of anti-Toxocara antibodies. This study aimed to assess the potential risk to consumers eating meat products from

Fascioliasis, caused by Fasciola species, is a disease of herbivorous animals. It has a worldwide distribution in a large variety of grass-grazing animals as sheep, goats, cattle, buffaloes, horses and rabbits. In Egypt, donkeys and camels as well, are hosts for F. gigantica. Fascioliasis may occasionally affect man. Human infection causes serious hepatic pathological sequences that add to the already known threats to the liver of the Egyptian population. Two clinical stages are recognized in human fascioliasis. An acute stage coincides with the larval migration and worm maturation in the hepa

Toxocara canis is a neglected zoonotic nematode that is widely prevalent worldwide. The parasite is of high veterinary and medical importance due to the disease it causes in dog pups and its ability to cause larval migration in humans, affecting internal organs. The most rational approach to contribute to the effective control of infection is considered to be the development of vaccines rather than the treatment of dogs with drugs. The current study identified a homolog (Tc-PYP) of inorganic pyrophosphatases (PPases) in T. canis lineages. Here, the efficacy of rTc-PYP, an adjuvanted form of th

The potential link between the infections and the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has led to speculations about the role of various pathogens in triggering amyloid-β (Aβ) overproduction, possibly leading to AD onset. The globally distributed dog roundworm Toxocara canis was suggested to be a suitable candidate due to neurotropism of the larvae and infection chronicity. This study investigated whether chronic T. canis infection induces AD-like pathology in mice and whether Aβ is toxic to T. canis. BALB/c and APP/PS1 transgenic mice, which overproduce Aβ, were infected with T. canis L3 l

We investigated organ specific Toxocara canis larval migration in mice infected with T. canis larvae. We observed the worm burden and systemic immune responses. Three groups of BALB/c mice (n=5 each) were orally administered 1,000 T. canis 2nd stage larvae to induce larva migrans. Mice were sacrificed at 1, 3, and 5 weeks post-infection. Liver, lung, brain, and eye tissues were collected. Tissue from 2 mice per group was digested for larval count, while the remaining 3 mice underwent histological analysis. Blood hematology and serology were evaluated and compared to that in a control uninfecte

Domestic dogs and cats can serve as a source of environmental contamination with Toxocara spp. and Blastocystis spp., and this represents a neglected public and veterinary health problem. We assessed the microscopic and molecular prevalence of these species in a locality in Algeria and identified the associated risk factors. The faeces of 225 dogs and 78 cats were collected in Mitidja between March and July 2022. The samples were analysed by coproscopy and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 (ITS2) and Small Subunit Ribosomal (SSU-RNA) of T. canis and

PURPOSE: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) and Toxocara spp. are two types of parasites that can infect humans and various animals, including dogs. Police dogs and their trainers have a vital role in law enforcement, and their health and well-being are crucial for them to effectively carry out their duties. No study has yet been conducted on the prevalence of T. gondii and Toxocara spp. infections among police dogs and their trainers in Iran. The objective of this study was to determine the sero-molecular prevalence of T. gondii and Toxocara spp. infections in police dogs and their trainers in Teh

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of feline intestinal parasites in Finland and to determine the possible risk factors for infection. Altogether 411 feline fecal samples were analyzed with a flotation method to reveal helminth eggs and protozoan oocysts. Of the samples, 402 were also screened for Giardia species antigens with a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The cat owners completed a questionnaire. Toxocara cati prevalence was 5.4% and Toxascaris leonina 0.2%. Taenia species eggs were found in 1.5% of the samples and Isospora felis in 0.7%, whilst 3.2% of

We performed a serological survey of Toxocara canis infection in junior high school students from three districts in northern Sulawesi. Almost all of the 117 subjects from two rural districts near Manado allowed dogs in their houses, and there was an 84.6% prevalence of T. canis infection in this group. Fifty-three subjects (45.3%) had serum samples with a high titer of specific anti-Toxocara antibody. By contrast, 41 students tested in one urban district showed a 12.2% prevalence. To confirm the clinical symptoms of visceral larva migrans (VML) and ocular larva migrans (OLM) caused by Toxocar
