Molecular detection and distribution of piroplasms and Anaplasma species and their co-infections in cattle from three Egyptian governorates.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs), including piroplasmosis and anaplasmosis, are globally distributed and pose significant threats to cattle. This study investigated the prevalence, co-infections, and risk factors of bovine piroplasmosis and anaplasmosis in three Egyptian governorates, Beni-Suef, Al-Faiyum, and Al-Minya, over a one year period. A total of 601 cattle blood samples were screened for hemopathogens using microscopic examination, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and nucleotide sequences analysis. Risk factors were analyzed using the chi-square (χ2) test (P < 0.05). Hemopathogens were dete

Incidence rate of Rift Valley fever exposure in humans and livestock from a longitudinal study in Northern Kenya.

Unravelling the mechanisms of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) maintenance in endemic areas during interepidemic periods is critical for enhancing early detection and response. Unfortunately, data on key epidemiological parameters, such as incidence rates, which are crucial for risk assessments and designing targeted interventions, are almost nonexistent. We conducted a longitudinal study of 1,938 pastoral livestock and 814 livestock keepers in an endemic region of northern Kenya from March 2022 to May 2023 to estimate the incidence rate of RVFV exposure and determine risk factors for infection.

Tick-borne Diseases (Borreliosis, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis) in German and Austrian Dogs: Status quo and Review of Distribution, Transmission, Clinical Findings, Diagnostics and Prophylaxis.

Tick-borne diseases (TBD) in dogs have gained in significance in German and Austrian veterinary practices. The widespread European tick species Ixodes ricinus represents an important vector for spirochaetes of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group and Rickettsiales such as Anaplasma phagocytophilum. The meadow or ornate dog tick (Dermacentor reticulatus) is an important vector for Babesia canis, as is the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) for Babesia vogeli in the Mediterranean region. The present work covers pathogen transmission by tick vectors, including the mechanisms and the m

Organic pollutants in compost and digestate. Part 2. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, and -furans, dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls, brominated flame retardants, perfluorinated alkyl substances, pesticides, and other compounds.

Compost and digestate are important recycling fertilizers and have beneficial effects on soil parameters. However, they can contain significant amounts of organic pollutants. Here, the first comprehensive data set on dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/F), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCB), brominated flame retardants, perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), pesticides, phthalates, nonylphenol and chlorinated paraffins (CP) in source-separated compost and digestate from Switzerland is presented (n = 3-18). The median summation 17PCDD/F and summation 12DL-PCB concentrations were at

Ectoparasites--the underestimated realm.

CONTEXT: Ectoparasitoses (infestations with parasites that live on or in the skin) can cause considerable morbidity. Whereas pediculosis and scabies are ubiquitous, cutaneous larva migrans and tungiasis (sand-flea disease) occur mainly in hot climates. The prevalence of ectoparasitoses in the general population is usually low, but can be high in vulnerable groups. Scientific knowledge on how to deal best with parasitic skin diseases in different settings is scanty, and evidence-based measures for control are not available. For head lice and scabies the situation is daunting, because resistance

Adverse and beneficial effects of plant extracts on skin and skin disorders.

Plants are of relevance to dermatology for both their adverse and beneficial effects on skin and skin disorders respectively. Virtually all cultures worldwide have relied historically, or continue to rely on medicinal plants for primary health care. Approximately one-third of all traditional medicines are for treatment of wounds or skin disorders, compared to only 1-3% of modern drugs. The use of such medicinal plant extracts for the treatment of skin disorders arguably has been based largely on historical/anecdotal evidence, since there has been relatively little data available in the scienti

Amitraz poisoning mimicking organophosphate toxicity in a young woman: a clinically diagnosed case report from Western India.

BACKGROUND: Amitraz is a formamidine insecticide and acaricide widely used in veterinary and agricultural settings. Human poisoning with amitraz is uncommon but potentially serious, primarily due to its alpha-2 adrenergic agonist activity, monoamine oxidase inhibition, and prostaglandin synthesis inhibition. It is frequently misdiagnosed as organophosphate poisoning, leading to inappropriate management. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 26-year-old female from Himmatnagar, Gujarat, India, who ingested an amitraz formulation (12.5% w/v in xylene) with suicidal intent following a famil

Hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic effects of etoxazole in rats: dose-response relationships, oxidative stress mechanisms, and provisional NOAEL/LOAEL estimates.

Etoxazole (ETX) is a widely used organofluorine acaricide/insecticide applied to many food crops, and its residues have been detected in food matrices at levels of concern for human dietary exposure. However, its hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic potential following subchronic oral exposure remains insufficiently characterized. This study investigated the dose-dependent effects of repeated oral ETX administration on serum biochemical parameters, hepatic and renal antioxidant enzyme activities, lipid peroxidation, and histopathological features in Wistar albino rats. Six groups of seven female rats e

Egyptian mandarin peel oil's anti-scabies potential via downregulation-of-inflammatory/immune-cross-talk: GC-MS and PPI network studies.

The current study investigated the scabicidal potential of Egyptian mandarin peel oil (Citrus reticulata Blanco, F. Rutaceae) against sarcoptic mange-in-rabbits. Analysis of the oil's GC-MS identified a total of 20 compounds, accounting for 98.91% of all compounds found. Mandarin peel oil topical application improved all signs of infection, causing a scabicidal effect three days later, whereas in vitro application caused complete mite mortality one day later. In comparison to ivermectin, histopathological analysis showed that the epidermis' inflammatory-infiltration/hyperkeratosis-had disappea

Rosacea, an infectious disease: why rosacea with papulopustules should be considered a demodicosis. A narrative review.

Rosacea and demodicosis are common facial conditions in dermatology practice. While demodicosis is clearly the result of Demodex mite infestation, the pathogenicity of rosacea is still not sufficiently explained, so that it is defined by its symptoms, and not by its cause. It is usually considered as a disease of the immune system associated with neurogenic inflammation triggered by various factors (ultraviolet light, heat, spicy food, alcohol, stress and microorganisms). Its links with demodicosis remain controversial, although there is increasing evidence that Demodex mites may play a key ro

Designing an Intervention Trial of Human-Tick Encounters and Tick-Borne Diseases in Residential Settings Using 4-Poster Devices to Control Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae): Challenges for Site Selection and Device Placement.

Blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say, transmit Lyme disease spirochetes and other human pathogens in the eastern United States. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are key reproductive hosts for I. scapularis adults, and therefore control methods targeting deer have the potential for landscape-wide tick suppression. A topical acaricide product, containing 10% permethrin, is self-applied by deer to kill parasitizing ticks when they visit 4-Poster Tick Control Deer Feeders (hereafter, 4-Posters) Previous 4-Poster intervention studies, including in residential settings, demonstrated su

Immunomic Investigation of Holocyclotoxins to Produce the First Protective Anti-Venom Vaccine Against the Australian Paralysis Tick, Ixodes holocyclus.

Venom producing animals are ubiquitously disseminated among vertebrates and invertebrates such as fish, snakes, scorpions, spiders, and ticks. Of the ~890 tick species worldwide, 27 have been confirmed to cause paralysis in mammalian hosts. The Australian paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) is the most potent paralyzing tick species known. It is an indigenous three host tick species that secretes potent neurotoxins known as holocyclotoxins (HTs). Holocyclotoxins cause a severe and harmful toxicosis leading to a rapid flaccid paralysis which can result in death of susceptible hosts such as dogs.

Agricultural Pesticide Use in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: The majority of farmers in Malawi use pesticides to protect their crops from pests. Without the use of pesticides, farmers would not be able to harvest significant yields. However, several studies worldwide have shown that some pesticides used by farmers are harmful to human health. Despite these studies, there remains a lack of proper documentation of the use and nature of harmful pesticides. OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study aimed to explore agricultural pesticides used in Malawi, to investigate factors that make Malawi vulnerable to illegal pesticide use, and to assess the e

Treating cattle to protect people? Impact of footbath insecticide treatment on tsetse density in Chad.

BACKGROUND: In Chad, several species of tsetse flies (Genus: Glossina) transmit African animal trypanosomoses (AAT), which represents a major obstacle to cattle rearing, and sleeping sickness, which impacts public health. After the failure of past interventions to eradicate tsetse, the government of Chad is now looking for other approaches that integrate cost-effective intervention techniques, which can be applied by the stake holders to control tsetse-transmitted trypanosomoses in a sustainable manner. The present study thus attempted to assess the efficacy of restricted application of insect

Efficacy of amitraz applied as a dip against an amitraz-resistant strain of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) infested on cattle.

Selection pressure with the acaricide, amitraz was applied to a strain of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) in 13 out of 18 generations, resulting in a 28.7-fold increase in resistance, indicating a shift in the phenotypic composition of the ticks, from a heterogenous mixture of both susceptible and resistant ticks when selection began to a homogenous composition of predominantly resistant ticks when selection ended. Resistant larvae of the last selected generation were infested on cattle three separate times at 20, 13, and 6 d (7 d intervals) before being dipped in a total imme

Characterization of two cDNAs encoding serine proteinases from the hard tick Haemaphysalis longicornis.

Host vaccination against tick infestation is at present the most practical and sustainable alternative tick control method to the current acaricide use which has serious limitations. However the success of this approach to control ticks depends upon the identification of target vaccine antigens. Members of the serine proteinase gene family may represent an interesting group of proteins to target as candidate antigens because of their involvement in regulation of many physiological functions and development processes in a wide range of organisms. We used RT-PCR with the 3' and 5' RACE to clone

Allergen avoidance in infancy and allergy at 4 years of age.

In an attempt to prevent or reduce the manifestations of atopic disease, a group of infants considered to be genetically at high risk of atopy was entered in a prenatally randomized, controlled study. A prophylactic group (n = 58) was either breast-fed with their mothers excluding foods regarded as highly antigenic from their diets, or given an extensively hydrolysed formula. In addition, strenuous efforts were made to reduce exposure to the house-dust mite by application of acaricide to the bedroom and living room carpets and upholstered furniture. A control group (n = 62) was fed conventiona
