The aim of this study was to report our experience with cartilage tympanoplasty (CT) in smokers and compare it with that of non-smokers using a retrospective chart review at a tertiary referral center. Between September 2008 and September 2010, cartilage tympanoplasty was performed in 52 patients. Among them, 27 were active smokers and 25 former or non-smokers. The entire tympanic membrane was replaced with conchal cartilage, shaped either as a shield for cases with intact canal wall mastoidectomies, or crashed for cases with canal wall down procedures. The mean post-operative follow-up was 12

First branchial cleft anomalies are uncommon lesions that often present as periauricular infections. They have high recurrence rates, due in part to scarring secondary to prior infections and their management. These lesions have a close relationship with the facial nerve, and most authors recommend its identification and dissection because of this relationship. Nonetheless, facial nerve palsy has been reported in up to 15% of cases. We describe a novel technique for the management of first branchial cleft anomalies. Such lesions that presented in an infra- or postauricular location were approa

Auricular reconstruction following oncologic excision remains challenging because of the complex three-dimensional anatomy of the ear, limited local tissue reserve, and the need to preserve contour, projection, and external auditory canal patency. Large full-thickness defects involving multiple auricular subunits are particularly difficult to reconstruct without substantial alteration of auricular dimensions or the need for cartilage grafting or staged procedures. This case describes a 100-year-old woman with a rapidly progressive auricular lesion involving the right helix, antihelix, and a po

This unit describes the utility of various mouse models of infection for studying pathogenesis and adaptive immune responses to the facultative intracellular bacteria pathogen Francisella tularensis. By judicious use of different combinations of mouse and bacterial strains, as well as different routes of infection, murine tularemia models may be used to explore a complete picture of F. tularensis infection and immunity. Moreover, studies using Francisella, particularly the Live Vaccine Strain (LVS), serve as a convenient and tractable model system that appears to be representative of mammalian

BACKGROUND: Auricular keloids are challenging to manage, and recurrent keloids are more aggressive and likely to cause auricular deformities. Monotherapy such as surgical resection, injection, or radiotherapy alone has a high recurrence rate. The treatment approach for auricular keloids remains to be investigated.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 30 patients who received treatment at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, between December 2021 and May 2023. Based on the size, location, and extent of keloid invasion, the appear

BACKGROUND: Passive transcutaneous osseointegrated hearing implant systems have become increasingly popular more recently. The area over the implant is vulnerable due to vibration and pressure from the externally worn sound processor. Good perfusion and neural integrity has the potential to reduce complications. The authors' objective was to determine the ideal surgical exposure to maintain perfusion and neural integrity and decrease surgical time as a result of reduced bleeding.
METHODS: The vascular anatomy of the temporal-parietal soft tissue was examined in a total of 50 subjects. Imaging

BACKGROUND: Depression presents a significant burden to both patients and society. One treatment that has emerged is vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), an FDA-approved physical treatment for depressive disorders. However, the application of this intervention has been limited by the involvement of surgery and potential side effects. The aim of this study is to explore the effectiveness of stimulating the superficial branches of the vagus nerve as a solo treatment for MDD.
METHODS: This is a nonrandomized, controlled study. The first cohort of patients (n=91) only received transcutaneous auricular

BACKGROUND: In rats, low-frequency electroneurostimulation (ENS) of the ear afferent vagus endings and brainstem structures via transauricular electroacupuncture increases the parasympathetic tone of the autonomic nervous system. We examined the effects of ENS applied in the preoperative period in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting operations.
METHODS: ENS was performed in a group of 10 patients with CAD who were classified as Canadian Cardiovascular Society class IV before operation. A second group of 10 patients with a similar degree of

BACKGROUND: In ear reconstruction, the difficulty lies in reestablishing the ear's bionic form with adequate skin coverage and an appropriate framework. Skin expansion and a porous polyethylene (i.e., Medpor) framework are often used for ear reconstruction. However, a long-term review of the combined application of the expanded skin and Medpor framework has not been reported. This article reviews ear reconstruction combining these two factors over the past 20 years in the authors' center to summarize the surgical technique and analyze the postoperative results and complications.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In reconstructive surgery for microtia during childhood, costal cartilage is used for pinna formation. Postoperative pain in the region from which the costal cartilage is taken is severe, which delays recovery after surgery. We evaluated prospectively whether continuous wound infiltration (CWI) of a local anesthetic (LA) reduces pain and enables rapid recovery compared with a single intercostal nerve block (ICNB).
METHOD: Forty-eight patients were randomly divided into two groups. In Group I, a single ICNB with 10 ml of 0.75% ropivacaine was performed at the end of surgery

Primary temporal bone squamous cell carcinoma is sporadic. According to previous studies, margin-negative resection provides the best prognosis (Nakagawa et al., 2006; Moody et al., 2000; Yin et al., 2006; Komune et al., 2021 [1-4]). When tumors extend behind the tympanic membrane, lateral temporal bone resection, which is a well-established procedure, is insufficient to achieve a tumor-free margin. For these cases, subtotal temporal bone resection (STBR) can achieve a complete en bloc resection with a tumor-free margin. Furthermore, STBR en bloc with surrounding structures, including the temp
