Effect of vitamin A deficiency on the adherence of fimbriated and nonfimbriated Salmonella typhimurium to isolated small intestinal enterocytes.

In vitamin A-deficient children, increased rates of bacterial infections in the intestine have been observed. The adherence of bacteria is a prerequisite for invasion. Thus, the effect of vitamin A deficiency on the adherence of fimbriated and nonfimbriated Salmonella typhimurium to isolated small intestinal enterocytes was studied. Male weanling rats matched by weight were divided into three groups: one group was fed a vitamin A-free diet for 8-12 weeks; another was given the same diet supplemented with retinol acetate; a third group matched for age served as controls. The vitamin A-deficient

The interactive effects of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) trypsin inhibitor, hemagglutinin and cyanide on some hepatic dehydrogenases, ornithine carbamoyltransferase and intestinal disaccharidases in weanling rats.

The interactive effects of lima bean trypsin inhibitor (TI), hemagglutinin (Hgg) and cyanide (CN) when fed at the same degree of activity as found in the raw lima bean (RLB) were assessed in weanling rats using hepatic glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH), ornithine carbamoyltransferase (OCT) and intestinal disaccharidases activities as the response criteria. Whereas RLB significantly (P less than 0.05) increased hepatic GLDH and decreased ICDH activities respectively, dietary CN, TI and Hgg whether acting individually or jointly had no significant influence on GLDH.

Morphological and biochemical studies of a naturally occurring enteropathy in the Irish setter dog: a comparison with coeliac disease in man.

A naturally occurring enteropathy was identified in Irish setter dogs and wheat-sensitivity was demonstrated in a litter bred from two of the affected animals. The morphological and biochemical features of this enteropathy are described and compared to coeliac disease in man. Affected animals comprised 10 dogs that presented with poor weight gain or weight loss, with or without diarrhoea. Exocrine pancreatic function was normal and culture of duodenal juice demonstrated no marked bacterial overgrowth. Serum vitamin B12 concentrations were unaltered, but in some cases low serum and erythrocyte

[Malabsorption of carbohydrates in children (author's transl)].

Physiological bases of digestion and absorption of carbohydrates are reviewed, as a preliminary step, in order to draw a general scheme of its patholophysiology. Clasification of different types of carbohydrate malabsorption is presented. Various exploration methods are discussed in terms of autors' own experiences. Relationship between a sugar screening test, faecal lactic acid contents and a simplified lactose tolerance test, is described in detail. Systematic diagnoses of these diseases are established. Different clinical pictures are reviewed. It is not yet well defined if a starch malabso

Lactose intolerance: from diagnosis to correct management.

BACKGROUND: It has been well known that the degeneration of hip articular cartilage with osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) increases the instability of hip and accelerates the development process of ONFH. A better understanding of the expression of chondrogenesis-related and arthritis-related genes of cartilage along with the progression of ONFH seems to be essential for further insight into the molecular mechanisms of ONFH pathogenesis. METHODS: We analyzed the differentially expressed gene profile (GSE74089) of human hip articular cartilage with ONFH. The functions and pathway enrich

Failure to improve parameters of lactose maldigestion using the multiprobiotic product VSL3 in lactose maldigesters: a pilot study.

Lactose maldigestion is a common genetic trait in up to 70% of the world's population. In these subjects, the ingestion of lactose may lead to prebiotic effects which can be confirmed by measurement of breath hydrogen. After a period of continuous lactose ingestion, colonic bacterial adaptation is measurable as improved parameters of lactose digestion. There may be inherent benefits in this process of adaptation which may protect against some diseases. We attempt to link therapeutically beneficial probiotics (VSL3, Seaford Pharmaceuticals Inc, Ontario) with improvement in parameters of lactose

Diagnostic and metabolic insights into secondary lactose intolerance in infants via fecal lactose quantification and gut microbiome profiling.

BACKGROUND: Secondary Lactose intolerance (SLI) is common among infants in China, primarily resulting from secondary lactase deficiency due to mucosal damage. Current diagnostic methods are limited by poor sensitivity and specificity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate gut microbial composition and metabolic dysfunction in infants with SLI and to explore the potential utility of residual fecal lactose as a non-invasive indicator related to SLI. RESULTS: SLI infants exhibited significantly higher residual fecal lactose and lactate levels accompanied by reduced fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) avail

Effect of animal plasma proteins on intestinal damage and recovery of neonatal pigs infected with rotavirus.

Rotaviruses infect and elicit diarrhea in neonates of most mammalian species and cause 800,000 infant deaths a year. We used neonatal piglets to study the effects of dietary animal plasma proteins on intestinal health following rotavirus infection. Plasma protein contains a diverse mixture of functional components with biological activity and improves the health of animals challenged with other diarrhea-causing pathogens. In a 2 x 2 factorial design, we compared plasma protein- and soy protein-based diets in rotavirus-infected and noninfected piglets to determine if plasma protein reduced acut

Undernourished Children and Milk Lactose.

BACKGROUND: Lactose is an important energy source in young mammals, and in fully breast-fed human infants, it constitutes around 40% of the total daily energy intake. The role of lactose in feeding of undernourished infants and young children is not well described. OBJECTIVE: A narrative review of the potential positive and negative effects of lactose in the treatment of undernourished children. METHODS: Searches were conducted using PUBMED and Web of Science up to July 2015. Relevant references in the retrieved articles were included. RESULTS: Lactose may exhibit several health benefits in

Simultaneous genotyping of the three lactose tolerance-linked polymorphisms LCT -13907C>G, LCT -13910C>T and LCT -13915T>G with Pyrosequencing technology.

BACKGROUND: We required a new genotyping method for the diagnosis of adult hypolactasia, which would allow the simultaneous genotyping of three known polymorphic loci linked to lactose tolerance (LCT -13907C>G, LCT -13910C>T and LCT -13915T>G) in a single PCR/pyrosequencing test run. METHOD: We utilized Pyrosequencing technology, a DNA-sequence-by-synthesis technique. RESULTS: The developed Pyrosequencing method allowed genotyping of the three loci LCT -13907C>G, LCT -13910C>T and LCT -13915T>G in a single PCR/pyrosequencing test run. A separate Pyrosequencing assay was developed for genotyp

Bugs got milk? Exploring the potential of lactose as a prebiotic ingredient for the human gut microbiota of lactose-tolerant individuals.

Milk consumption is important to help meet daily nutrient requirements. However, lactose-present in dairy products-has been associated with digestive discomfort in individuals who are lactose intolerant or have inadequate lactase activity. Yet, a new perspective on this dietary component has emerged: its potential as a prebiotic for the lactose-tolerant population. We hypothesized that ingestion of lactose may improve the microbial community structure and metabolism of the gut microbiota from healthy adults. First, we assessed the acute impact of lactose ingestion on the gut microbiota of adul

Epidemiology of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is defined as an increase in the bacterial content of the small intestine above normal values. The presence of SIBO is detected in 33.8% of patients with gastroenterological complaints who underwent a breath test, and is significantly associated with smoking, bloating, abdominal pain, and anemia. Proton pump inhibitor therapy is a significant risk factor for SIBO. The risk of SIBO increases with age and does not depend on gender or race. SIBO complicates the course of a number of diseases and may be of pathogenetic significance in the development of

Human biological variation and the "normal".

Anatomically modern human being is a relatively young species (~300 000 years old) with small amounts of genetic variation contained within them. The vast majority of its existence was spent in Eastern Africa, migration out of the region began around 100 000 YBP. Sub-Saharan African populations have the greatest amount of human genetic variation. However, migration allowed populations to accumulate genomic variation associated with living in the arctic, higher altitudes, disease resistance, living on high fat or starchy foods, surviving toxic arsenic-rich environments, lactase persistence, cha

Modeling age-dependent developmental changes in the expression of genes involved in citrulline synthesis using pig enteroids.

BACKGROUND: Age-dependent changes in the intestinal gene expression of enzymes involved in the metabolism of citrulline and arginine are well characterized. Enteroids, a novel ex-vivo model that recreates the three-dimensional structure of the intestinal crypt-villus unit, have shown to replicate molecular and physiological profiles of the intestinal segment from where they originated ("location memory"). OBJECTIVE: The present study tested the hypothesis that enteroids recapitulate the developmental changes observed in vivo regarding citrulline production in pigs ("developmental memory"). M

Use of genetic testing for hypolactasia trait in the North Denmark Region.

OBJECTIVE: Lactose intolerance (LI) may be considered in patients with unspecific gastrointestinal symptoms, but there is no clear consensus on when and how to diagnose the disorder. The LCT-13910 CC genotype is associated with acquired primary lactase deficiency (adult-type hypolactasia; ATH). We aimed to describe the number of tests and test results in the North Denmark Region considering patient age, geographical origin and repeated testing. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of the polymerase chain reaction-based LCT-13910 genotype tests registered in the clinical laboratory information sy

An association between lactose intolerance and anthropometric variables in the Sudanese Shagia tribe (East Africa).

BACKGROUND: The culture of contemporary Sudanese tribes is not homogeneous. One of the three main tribes in northern Sudan is the Shagia tribe. This study is part of the large-scale research project to anthropologically and genetically describe the Shagia population, who inhabited three villages in an isolated region of the Fourth Nile Cataract. This population is extremely homogeneous as a result of geographical, genetic and cultural isolation. AIM: The aim of the study was to analyse the frequency of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), C/T-13910 and G/C-14010, within the isolated po
