Autism Spectrum symptoms in a population of extremely undernourished patients with Anorexia Nervosa: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are overrepresented among individuals with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). We aimed to study the prevalence of ASD symptoms in extremely undernourished inpatients with AN and focus on potential cognitive and nutritional correlates. METHODS: We recruited prospectively all extremely undernourished patients with AN admitted to the Nutritional Care Unit of Paul Brousse Hospital over four months. ASD traits and AN psychopathology were assessed by administering the Autism Quotient (AQ) and the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2). Neuropsychological and

Treatment of schizotypal disorder: A systematic review and GRADE evaluation of the certainty of evidence.

BACKGROUND: Evidence to guide treatment for schizotypal disorder is scarce, and clinical guidelines remain undeveloped. This systematic review synthesized current evidence on pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions targeting clinical symptoms, cognition, and functioning in schizotypal disorder. METHODS: We searched PsychINFO, Embase, Medline, and Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials (25/03/2025) without date restrictions, supplemented by handsearching. Eligible studies were screened, quality appraised, and data extracted by two independent authors. Due to substantial heterogenei

Postural motion perception during vestibular stimulation depends on the motion perception threshold in persistent postural-perceptual dizziness.

Patients with persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) perceive postural instability larger than the observed sway. It is unknown whether the concept of postural misperception prevails during vestibular stimulation and whether it may account for the unsteadiness patients complain during body movements. We tested the hypothesis of an abnormal sensory-perceptual scaling mechanism in PPPD by recording objective, perceived, and the reproduced postural sway under various standing conditions, modulating visual and proprioceptive input, by binaural galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). We rel

Health-related quality of life in children and adolescents with paediatric acquired brain injury: Secondary data analysis from a randomised controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To explore the characteristic quality of health profiles of children with paediatric acquired brain injury (pABI), and to investigate whether improvement in executive function (EF) following cognitive rehabilitation is associated with improvement in health-related quality of life (HRQOL). METHOD: A study of secondary endpoints in a blinded, parallel-randomised controlled trial with children (ages 10-17 years) with pABI and executive dysfunction. Data was obtained from 73 children-parent dyads. Explorative analyses were conducted comparing baseline with 8-week post-intervention, and 6

Updating Prospective Self-Efficacy Beliefs About Cardiac Interoception in Anorexia Nervosa: An Experimental and Computational Study.

Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) typically hold altered beliefs about their body that they struggle to update, including global, prospective beliefs about their ability to know and regulate their body and particularly their interoceptive states. While clinical questionnaire studies have provided ample evidence on the role of such beliefs in the onset, maintenance, and treatment of AN, psychophysical studies have typically focused on perceptual and 'Локально' beliefs. Across two experiments, we examined how women at the acute AN (N = 86) and post-acute AN state (N = 87), compared to matched hea

Predictors of clinical worsening during a discontinuation trial of serotonin reuptake inhibitors for obsessive compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To explore predictors and moderators of clinical worsening during a double-blind trial in which patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were randomized to either continue or discontinue their Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SRI) medication after achieving wellness from the addition of exposure and response prevention (EX/RP) therapy. METHOD: The data came from a double-blind discontinuation trial that included N = 101 participants, 35 of whom were removed from the study due to clinical worsening. We first used LASSO logistic regression to identify which of the 34 potential

Insight does not come at random: Individual gray matter networks relate to clinical and cognitive insight in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Impaired clinical and cognitive insight are prevalent in schizophrenia and relate to poorer outcome. Good insight has been suggested to depend on social cognitive and metacognitive abilities requiring global integration of brain signals. Impaired insight has been related to numerous focal gray matter (GM) abnormalities distributed across the brain suggesting dysconnectivity at the global level. In this study, we test whether global integration deficiencies reflected in gray matter network connectivity underlie individual variations in insight. METHODS: We used graph theory to exam

Effects of attention training technique on brain function in high- and low-cognitive-attentional syndrome individuals: Regional dynamics before, during, and after a single session of ATT.

OBJECTIVE: Attention Training Technique (ATT) is a key therapeutic tool in metacognitive therapy. There are numerous studies on the behavioral effects of ATT, however the neural mechanisms at work in the training are yet to be uncovered. To date there have been no controlled fMRI studies of ATT. METHOD: We conducted a randomized double-blind controlled study of two groups with varying levels of cognitive-attentional syndrome (CAS). Groups with high (n = 43) and low (n = 46) levels of CAS underwent a single session of ATT or a control condition (CON) in an MRI scanner. Participants underwent r

The effects of body exposure on self-body image and esthetic appreciation in anorexia nervosa.

Repeated exposures to thin-idealized body shapes may alter women's perceptions of what normal (e.g., accepted) and ideal (e.g., desired) bodies in a cultural environment look like. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether exposure to thin and round body shapes may change the subsequent esthetic appreciation of others' bodies and the perceptual and cognitive-affective dimensions of self-body image in patients suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN). Thirteen AN patients and 13 matched healthy controls were exposed to pictures of either thin or round unfamiliar body models and, befor

Lessons from nature: achieving postural balance inspired by biomechanics and natural (a)symmetry. A perspective article.

INTRODUCTION: Musicians playing asymmetrically held instruments are particularly susceptible to playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMD). But a sustained asymmetrical posture is unavoidable, making it essential for musicians to manage the demands that this asymmetry places on their body. Standard PRMD prevention includes education on physical competence, healthy practice habits, and tailored exercises. However, the author hypothesizes that musicians could also benefit from a nature-inspired approach alongside established preventive measures. AIM: This perspective article aims to prese

Large Language Model and Pediatric Neurosurgery - A Neurosurgeon's Perspective on the Artificial Nervous System.

Large language models (LLMs) are rapidly transforming healthcare, yet their implications for pediatric neurosurgery remain underexplored. This narrative review interprets LLM evolution through a neuroscientific lens familiar to pediatric neurosurgeons. We trace the parallel development of LLMs and the human brain : architecture evolving from sequential processing to attention mechanisms mirrors prefrontal cortex maturation; training stages parallel synaptic exuberance, adolescent pruning, and socialization; reasoning capabilities emerge through chain-of-thought prompting and reinforcement lear

Linking compromise and responsibility attribution to risky decision-making in dyadic foraging.

From hunting to financial planning, many decisions are made under risk and alongside social partners whose decisions and outcomes are coupled with our own. Joint decision-making can create challenges, such as navigating conflicting risk preferences, evaluating each other's actions, and deciding whether to compromise. Yet when and why people compromise, how they evaluate each other's responsibilities during joint decision-making, and the computational and psychological underpinnings of these processes remain unclear. We introduce a dyadic foraging paradigm designed to capture diverse risk prefe

Ironic Medications: A Narrative-Based Psycho-Educational Intervention to Explore Patient-Provider Communication in Adolescents With Haematological Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with haematological malignancies face significant emotional and relational challenges, often accompanied by difficulties in communicating their needs within the healthcare context. To address these issues, a narrative-based psycho-educational intervention based on the creation and prescription of Ironic Medications was developed. These fictional remedies were designed to express emotions, experiences and needs in a playful yet meaningful way while exploring differences in how adolescents and healthcare staff perceive communication and relational needs. PROCEDURE: The i

Prior knowledge biases episodic memory by filling in the gaps in imprecise memories: Simulating aging effects in younger adults.

Episodic memories are consistently biased by prior knowledge in the form of schemas (e.g., where objects typically are). Rational memory reconstruction models propose that this results from the strategic recruitment of schemas at retrieval when memory traces are imprecise. We recently proposed that these models can also account for the increase in schema bias with aging: Aging reduces memory precision, thereby increasing schema usage. However, causal evidence that underlying memory imprecision increases schema bias is lacking, which is a critical gap for reconstruction theories and for our ext

The expert's cadence, the novice's rush: A multi-level analysis of cognitive rhythm in translation production under pressure.

This study examines how time pressure and translator experience interact to shape the cognitive rhythm of translation production. Sixty-five Chinese-English translators' (35 novices, 30 experienced) keystroke activities were tracked as they translated comparable texts under three time conditions: Short, Standard, and Free. Multi-level analyses captured micro-level behaviors (pausing, segmentation) and macro-level process organization (phase allocation, revision strategies). Results reveal experience-dependent adaptation. Both groups demonstrated increased fluency and production stability when

Highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM) in a 16-year-old male: Investigating involuntary autobiographical memory with questionnaire and laboratory methods.

Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM) is characterized by an exceptional ability to recall personal past events with remarkable accuracy and detail. While the mechanisms underlying this ability have begun to be elucidated, research so far has largely focused mainly on voluntary retrieval processes. The present study aimed to investigate autobiographical memory functioning in a single HSAM case (KCL), with a particular focus on involuntary autobiographical memories (IAMs). We combined standardized HSAM screening procedures with a multi-method assessment of autobiographical memory, impl

Financial Decision Making in Older Adults Is Associated With Frontoparietal-Salience Between-Network Connectivity.

Financial decision making (FDM) and awareness of one's own financial decision making abilities are both clinically and practically important constructs in older adults. Structural and functional neuroimaging may be useful to shed light on the neural mechanisms supporting these constructs and further help identify those at risk for making poor decisions and losing money. We used resting state (rs)-functional connectivity in the present study. We hypothesized that Frontoparietal-Salience (FP-SAL) between-network connectivity would be most strongly associated with FDM, while Default Mode Network-
