Outcomes of temporomandibular joint disorder therapy: observations over 13 years.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcome of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder therapy with different kinds of splints. METHODS: One-hundred-and-twenty-nine patients with TMJ disorders and meeting the primary selection criterion of reporting pain in the TMJ region were clinically evaluated. Magnetic resonance imaging of the TMJ was performed at baseline 1993-94. A protrusion splint was used whenever joint clicking could be eliminated by protrusion. In the other cases, a pivot or a Michigan splint was inserted. Re-evaluation of the patients after 12 months included a clinical examination. After

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation for the treatment of myoarthropatic symptoms in patients with craniomandibular dysfunction - a protocol for a randomized and controlled pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a collective term for pain and dysfunction of the masticatory muscles and the temporomandibular joints. The most common types of TMD are pain-related, which may impact the psychological behavior and quality of life. Currently, the most popular methods for the treatment of TMD patients are occlusal splint therapy, often in combination with physical- and/or pharmacotherapy. However, due to the complexity of etiology, the treatment of chronic TMD remains a challenge. Recently, CE-certified systems for non-invasive VNS (transcutaneous auricular vag

Repair process of external root resorption subsequent to palatal expansion treatment.

The repair process of external root resorption (ERR) and the role of retention mechanics in enhancing ERR repair were studied on eight Macaca fascicularis monkeys that were divided equally into short- and long-term groups. Six monkeys received palatal expansion appliances, and two received sham appliances. The short-term group received active treatment. The long-term group received additional retention (4 months) and relapse (2 months) treatment periods with biweekly injections of individual vital dye per phase, i.e., procion red H-8B and violet H-3R (80 mg/kg B.W.), respectively. The Impact of Complex Oral Rehabilitation on TMJ and Postural Alterations in Patients with Scapulohumeral Fractures.

Background and Objectives: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are prevalent conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint and associated musculature, arising from a complex interplay of biomechanical, neuromuscular, and psychosocial factors. Increasing evidence supports functional interconnections among the TMJ, cervical spine, and shoulder girdle, suggesting that dysfunction in one region may influence others; however, these relationships remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to evaluate the association between scapulohumeral trauma, postural abnormalities, and TMDs, and to asse

Substantial Improvements in Facial Morphology through Surgical-Orthodontic Treatment: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Background and Objectives: The long face type is associated with excessive vertical facial growth and most often with anterior open bite. In many cases of anterior open bite of high severity associated with bimaxillary dento-alveolar protrusion, lips are unable to form an adequate seal at rest. This leads to many issues, including facial dysmorphism. The aim of this study was to describe the case of a 15 year old girl who addressed the orthodontist in November 2015, having complaints related to the skeletal and dental open bite. Case Description: A 15.7 year old patient required a consultation

A screwless and cementless technique for the restoration of single-tooth implants: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: The Integrated Abutment Crown (IAC) is a technique for the fabrication of single-tooth implant-supported crowns where the abutment and the crown are one unit. The abutment-crown complex is connected to the implant with a locking taper. This technique does not use cement to retain the crown or screws to retain the abutment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of screwless, cementless single implant-supported crowns (IACs) placed in a general dental practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted between July 2001 and August 2003.

Neuropathic orofacial pain. Part 2-Diagnostic procedures, treatment guidelines and case reports.

Neuropathic orofacial pain can be difficult to diagnose because of the lack of clinical and radiographic abnormalities. Further difficulties arise if the patient exhibits significant distress and is a poor historian regarding previous diagnostic tests and treatments, such as somatosensory local anaesthetic blockade. Valuable information can be obtained by utilising the McGill Pain Questionnaire that allows the patient to choose words that describe the qualities of his/her pain in a number of important dimensions (sensory and effective). Basal pain intensity should be measured with the visual a

Clinical and radiographic evaluation of a computer-generated guiding device in bilateral sagittal split osteotomies.

The bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) is one of the main orthognathic surgery procedures used for managing skeletal mandibular excess, deficiency or asymmetry. It is known to be a technique-sensitive procedure with high reported incidences of inferior alveolar nerve injury, bad splits and post-surgical relapse. With the increasing use of computer-assisted techniques in orthognathic surgery, the accurate transfer of the virtual plan to the operating room is currently a subject of research. This study evaluated the efficacy of computer-generated device at maintaining the planned condylar

Reproducibility of 2 methods to locate centric relation in healthy individuals and TMD patients.

No conclusive evidence exists for any maxillomandibular relationship as the preferable treatment position. Measurement reliability of 2 different methods to attempt to locate centric relation in control and TMD patients was assessed to determine if both methods lead to the same position. A group of 27 controls and 91 TMD patients were examined using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD). Three patient groups were recruited: 27 patients with myofascial pain (MYO), 34 patients with disc displacement without reduction (ID), and 30 patients with osteoarthritis (OA). For each study par

Synovial fluid level of myeloperoxidase enzyme following ultrasound-guided regenerative injections in patients with irreducible temporomandibular disc displacement: a double-blinded parallel randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Irreducible temporomandibular disc displacement (DDwoR) is a subtype of internal derangement of temporomandibular joint (TMJ-ID). Recognizing the risks related to DDwoR with its pathogenesis, the treatment of this disorder becomes essential. Prolotherapy, also known as regenerative injection therapy, has been emerging as one of the most promising approaches to treat patients with TMJ-ID. The current prospective parallel randomized clinical trial (RCT) was done to assess the effect of hypertonic dextrose (HD) regenerative injection and that of concentrated growth factors (CGF) in co

Efficacy of stabilisation splint treatment on temporomandibular disorders.

The evidence supporting the use of stabilisation splints in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is scarce and a need for well-controlled studies exists. The aim of this randomised, controlled trial study was to assess the efficacy of stabilisation splint treatment on TMD. The sample consisted of 80 consecutive referred patients who were randomly assigned to the splint group (n = 39) and the control group (n = 41). Subjects in the splint group were treated with a stabilisation splint, whereas subjects in the control group did not receive any treatment except counselling and instr
