OBJECTIVE: In patients with conductive or combined unilateral hearing loss, implantable hearing systems can be a treatment option. Due to the overlapping indications of hearing implants, a systematic evaluation of audiologic differences in terms of speech intelligibility and binaural hearing abilities is necessary. Because of the unilateral cochlear stimulation in patients implanted with an active middle ear implant, we expect superior binaural hearing performance compared with patients implanted with a bone-conducting implant that causes bilateral cochlear stimulation. This study focuses espe

Fibrous dysplasia is a slowly progressive benign fibro-osseous disease, rarely occurring in temporal bones. In these cases, most bony lesions developed from the bony part of the external auditory canals, causing otalgia, hearing impairment, otorrhea, and ear hygiene blockade and probably leading to secondary cholesteatoma. We presented the medical history of a 24-year-old woman with temporal monostotic fibrous dysplasia with secondary cholesteatoma. The initial presentation was unilateral conductive hearing loss. A hard external canal tumor contributing to canal stenosis and a near-absent tymp

INTRODUCTION: Active middle ear implants (aMEI) are being increasingly used for hearing restoration in congenital aural atresia. The existing gradings used for CT findings do not meet the requirements for these implants. Some items are expendable, whereas other important imaging factors are missing. We aimed to create a new grading system that could describe the extent of the malformation and predict the viability and challenges of implanting an aMEI.
METHODS: One hundred three malformed ears were evaluated using HRCT of the temporal bone. The qualitative items middle ear and mastoid pneumati

OBJECTIVE: In this publication, we present our experiences with managing an "Ear Camp" in northern Namibia, where the population is predominantly black. Medical coverage for ear problems is poor in this part of the country.
METHODS: Within 10 days, 38 children (median age 12 years) were operated mainly for (sub) total defects of the tympanic membrane. In two cases, an open cavity had to be created because of a cholesteatoma. We performed a tympanoplasty type I in 18 cases and a tympanoplasty type III in 20 cases. Additionally, in 8 cases an antrotomy and in another 8 cases a mastoidectomy was

BACKGROUND: The Direct-Drive-Simulation (DDS) tends to simulate the sound quality of hearing with the active middle ear implant Vibrant Soundbridge(®) (VSB). Up to now a scientific evaluation of the validity is missing. Furthermore, the test procedure has not been described yet. Aim of this study was to evaluate the test validity and to describe the test realization in detail.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 10 patients evaluated their sound impression on scales from 1 to 10 concerning sound quality during DDS, postoperative free field testing at least 3 month after the first fitting of the VSB and in

HYPOTHESIS: Mechanical stimulation of the round window (RW) with an active middle ear implant (AMEI) with and without experimentally induced stapes fixation (SF) results in equivalent electrophysiologic measures of cochlear microphonic (CM), compound action potential (CAP), and auditory brainstem response (ABR).
BACKGROUND: Where normal oval window functionality is mitigated, the RW provides a pathway to mechanically stimulate the inner ear.
METHODS: Measurements of the CM, CAP, and ABR were made in 5 ears of 4 chinchillas with acoustic stimulation and with application of the AMEI to the RW

This paper presents a case of a 28-year-old male with a seizure episode and a 4-year history of intermittent tinnitus on the left ear. On computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, a density with rim enhancement was found at the temporal lobe, associated with mastoid tegmen destruction and middle ear mass, indicating cholesteatoma with complicating brain abscess. Evacuation of the brain abscess was performed with a combined otolaryngologic and neurosurgical procedures (canal wall-down mastoidectomy and temporal craniotomy). The pathology turned out to be infestation with Echinococcus

From 1975 to 1992, a total of 1459 primary stapedoplasty operations (i.e., stapedectomy, stapedotomy with tendon section, and stapedotomy with tendon preservation) were performed in 1323 subjects at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of the University of Verona. Pure-tone audiometry was carried out in all subjects who were operated on and who underwent 6-month and 10-year follow-ups. To evaluate the influence of stapedius tendon preservation on functional outcome, we randomly selected subgroups of patients using the three different stapedioplasty techniques and tested them by multiple-freque
