AIMS: To perform minimally invasive and preventive treatment in patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) with hyperdontia in the upper jaw.
BACKGROUND: Marfan syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic disease of the connective tissue that is characterized by manifestations in cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, ophthalmological, and oral structures. The diagnosis of this disease is based on clinical and genetic criteria called the Ghent criteria. Within the oral manifestations, hyperdontia may occur, which corresponds to a numerical variation in the number of normal teeth; it can occur in a single or

Apical periodontitis (AP) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the periapical tissues, often caused by pulp necrosis. While primarily localized in the oral cavity, evidence suggests that AP may contribute to systemic inflammation, influencing conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, osteoporosis, and autoimmune disorders. This review examines the association between AP and various systemic health conditions. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and EMBASE was conducted, focusing on observational studies reporting systemic outcomes in individuals with AP

INTRODUCTION: Observational studies demonstrated that the relationship between bone mineral density and oral diseases is mixed. To access the association between heel bone mineral density and various oral diseases, we conducted the Mendelian randomization analysis to explore the association.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two-sample bidirectional Mendelian analysis was used to explore the relationship between heel bone mineral density and various oral diseases. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) was used as the primary effect estimate, and various methods were applied to test the reliability and sta

BACKGROUND Dental fusion is a developmental dental anomaly that clinicians must be aware of and able to identify. It results from the union of 2 adjacent tooth germs affecting the normal dentition and leads to a decrease in the number of permanent teeth. Clinically, the fused teeth show excessive width and irregular anatomy and can complicate any endodontic intervention. CASE REPORT A 26-year-old male patient presented to the clinic with severe pain related to the lower right mandibular area. The dental examination revealed a large tilted and irregular fused third molar with the fourth molar.

INTRODUCTION: Thorough pain assessment and thermal and mechanical testing are the primary diagnostic tools used to assess the status of pulp and periapical tissues in teeth with potential endodontic pathology. This study evaluated predictors of acute odontogenic pain to better understand the relationship between endodontic pain, clinical testing, endodontic disease, and diagnoses.
METHODS: Participants (N = 228) presenting with acute odontogenic pain underwent standardized clinical testing and reported their pain intensity. Univariate and multiple regression analyses were performed to evaluat

OBJECTIVES: Recent clinical recommendations contraindicate immediate implant placement when the socket buccal bone plate is significantly damaged. The connective tissue graft (CTG) is increasingly being used in implant therapy and can replace periodontal defects lacking bone wall in periodontal regenerative surgery. Therefore, CTG could be used to allow immediate implant placement and loading even when the buccal socket wall is damaged, facilitating graft material stability.
CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: In the first case, deep bone dehiscence was caused by a vertical root fracture. In the second

INTRODUCTION: Endodontic-periodontal combined lesions pose a treatment challenge for clinicians, especially when the lesion is persistent and does not show signs of healing after initial endodontic treatment. This case report describes interdisciplinary management of a non-healing combined endodontic-periodontal lesion related to a peri-apical cyst, through a combined approach of apicoectomy and guided tissue regeneration (GTR) with enamel matrix derivative (EMD). Most documented cases have been treated in a sequential manner, with minimal literature present on the effects of a combined approa

The development of bioactive Ca-silicate-based cements which may simultaneously suppress infection is promising for periapical therapy or alveolar bone defect repair. While these treatments are usually effective in the short term, many of these cements have not been designed to have an affinity with dental tissue in a prolonged anti-infectious manner and are only high alkaline in the early stages. This can lead to less favorable long-term outcomes, such as in bone repair or secondary therapy. Inspired by the strong antibacterial activity of zinc and copper ions, we developed a nonstoichiometri

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: Orthodontic miniscrews have become popular tools for providing temporary anchorage during orthodontic treatment. Although they are easy to insert, damage to the periodontal ligament or dental root during insertion is an unfavorable iatrogenic complication. Root perforation during miniscrew insertion in human teeth has been reported in a few articles. In this article, the authors describe the spontaneous repair of an iatrogenic root perforation in a mandibular first molar that occurred during insertion of an orthodontic miniscrew in a young girl undergoing orthodontic t

PURPOSE: The aim of this case series was to evaluate success and peri-implant bone response around Morse taper immediate implants with an immediate provisionalization.
METHODS: Twelve immediate implants were inserted in the maxilla of nine consecutively treated patients. Proximal bone response was evaluated with digital periapical radiographs, and the buccal wall height and width were evaluated with computed tomography.
RESULTS: A slight decrease in the marginal bone crest (0.14 ± 0.41 mm) at the mesial face and an increase (0.07 ± 1.58 mm) at the distal face were observed. Considering the p

Cementum covering the tooth root provides attachment for the tooth proper to the surrounding alveolar bone via non-mineralized periodontal ligament (PDL). Cementum protein 1 (CEMP1) has been shown to induce a cementoblastic phenotype in cementoblast precursors cells of PDL. Oxygen availability is a critical signal for correct development of many tissues; however, its role in tooth root and periodontium development remains poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrated that reduced oxygen tension increased CEMP1 expression, mineral deposition, and alkaline phosphatase activity in human denta

AIM: To determine whether commonly used endodontic sealers could either induce or increase the release of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) when in contact with cell types found in the periapical tissues.
METHODOLOGY: Freshly mixed samples of Roth 801 sealer, Sealapex and ProRoot mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) were placed in contact with cultured macrophages and fibroblasts for 24 h. The supernatant from the cultures was assayed for PGE2 using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Cell viability counts were made. As a positive control, similar cultures were also exposed to lipopolysaccharide and the sup

This paper highlights the typical clinical features of aggressive periodontitis (formerly known as juvenile periodontitis in the South Western region of Nigeria), the attending psychological effect following tooth loss, and the rehabilitative management offered which included periodontal therapy, psychotherapy, and prosthetic replacement of the missing teeth. The psychotherapy is the main distinguishing treatment in this study from previously reported modes of management of this disease entity. Subjects were from a part of the South Western region of Nigeria, and ages ranged from 15 to 22 year

BACKGROUND: Metastases to the gingiva are uncommon. They can be a diagnostic challenge clinically because of their rarity and tendency to mimic benign lesions. In this report, we present a case of an undifferentiated malignant neoplasm of unknown origin presenting as benign inflammatory gingival lesions and we review the literature on metastases to the gingiva.
METHODS: A 44-year-old female patient was referred by a local periodontist for evaluation of multiple painless gingival lesions that clinically resembled pyogenic granulomas or periodontal abscesses, but with an uncharacteristic multif

The radiographic procedures used for examination of the facial area and paranasal sinuses of 235 horses are reported. Clinical indications for these examinations and the diagnoses made are reviewed. Unilateral nasal discharge was the commonest reason for radiography, accounting for about one third of cases, most of which had radiological signs of paranasal sinus disease recognisable on erect lateral films. Oblique projections were required to obtain further information about the maxillary dental arcades and ventro-dorsal views demonstrated sinus expansion and extension of disease into the nasa

Biofilms are well-organized, surface-attached colonies of microorganisms that can thrive in host cavities. A balanced, diverse mix of protective microbes in these biofilms helps preserve host health. Dysbiosis in biofilms is responsible for consequential diseases in associated tissues. Dietary factors and other xenobiotics can cause ecological dysbiosis in the oral cavity that underpins dental caries, periodontal diseases, halitosis, and periapical infections. Although the gold standard for oral biofilm elimination remains mechanical removal, it is achieved with manual curettage or an ultrason

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis causes progressive attachment loss, which in turn causes tooth mobility and, ultimately, tooth loss. Regenerating and rebuilding the lost periodontal tissue is the goal of periodontal regenerative surgery. Regeneration using AmnioGuard, advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF), and NovaBone Putty has been demonstrated to be successful in increasing clinical attachment level and decreasing probing pocket depth.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare and evaluate the effectiveness of AmnioGuard and A-PRF membrane in combination with NovaBone Putty in the regeneration of hu
