Chemotaxonomy and Antibacterial Activity of the Extracts and Chemical Constituents of Psychotria succulenta Hiern. (Rubiaceae).

The use of natural products for medicinal purposes is becoming more and more common nowadays, as evidenced by the presence in plants of secondary metabolites with different potentials such as antioxidant and antibacterial properties. We evaluated in this work the antimicrobial activities of the extracts and some isolated compounds from the seeds of Psychotria succulenta Hiern. (Rubiaceae), a Cameroonian medicinal plant traditionally used to cure microbial infections. The ethanol extract was prepared by maceration and extracted with ethyl acetate and n-butanol. The EtOAc (m = 168 g) and n-BuOH

Methanolic extract of Cariniana rubra Gardner ex Miers stem bark negatively regulate the leukocyte migration and TNF-α and up-regulate the annexin-A1 expression.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cariniana rubra Gardner ex Miers (Lecythidaceae), is a native and endemic tree in Brazil, whose inner stem bark decoction preparation is used in folk medicine to treat various inflammatory disorders. Previous scientific reports confirmed its popular use as an anti-inflammatory, without, however, evaluating its action mechanisms. AIM: The objective of this study was to determine the cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory mechanism of action of the methanolic extract of Cariniana rubra (MECr), using experimental models in vivo and in vitro, as well as to identify sec

Extracts of endophytic fungi from leaves of selected Nigerian ethnomedicinal plants exhibited antioxidant activity.

BACKGROUND: Plants with an ethnobotanical history are known to harbor diverse group of endophytic fungi, which constitute major natural sources of bioactive compounds. In the present study, we evaluated the antioxidant activity of endophytic fungi from eight Nigerian ethnomedicinal plants. Endophytic fungi were isolated from the leaves of Acalypha ornata, Albizia zygia, Alchornea cordifolia, Chrysophyllum albidum, Ficus exasperata, Gomphrena celosioides, Millettia thonningii, and Newbouldia laevis. METHODS: Endophytic fungi were isolated from the leaves of selected plants via surface steriliz

Anagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, decreases macrophage infiltration and suppresses atherosclerosis in aortic and coronary arteries in cholesterol-fed rabbits.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have demonstrated suppression of aortic atherosclerosis by dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors in hypercholesterolemic mice. However, it remains unknown whether DPP-4 inhibitors also exert anti-atherogenic effects in coronary arteries. We examined the effect of anagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor, on atherosclerosis development in the aorta and coronary arteries in a high-cholesterol diet-fed rabbits. METHODS: Japanese white rabbits were fed either normal chow (n=8) or a diet containing 0.5% cholesterol (n=34) for 14weeks. Cholesterol-fed rabbits were given 0.3%

[Suppression effect of Mai Shu on formation of atherosclerotic plaque of apolipoprotein E knock-out mice].

The research aimed to investigate the suppression effect of Mai Shu which contains hawthorn, hippophae, medlar, phytosterols(β-sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol), β-glucan and lycopeneon formation of atherosclerotic plaque in apolipoprotein E knock-out (ApoE-/-) mice. Liquid chromatography-ultravioletmass spectrometry(LC-UV-MC) methods were used to analyze the main chemical composition of Mai Shu. Atherosclerotic mice models were established by high-fat diet. The mice were administrated with Mai Shu (1, 2, 4 g·kg-1·d-1) or other contrast materials by intragastric route for 10 weeks cont

Potential role of milk fat globule membrane in modulating plasma lipoproteins, gene expression, and cholesterol metabolism in humans: a randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Butter is rich in saturated fat [saturated fatty acids (SFAs)] and can increase plasma low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, compared with other dairy foods, butter is low in milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) content, which encloses the fat. We hypothesized that different dairy foods may have distinct effects on plasma lipids because of a varying content of MFGM. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate whether the effects of milk fat on plasma lipids and cardiometabolic risk markers are modulated by the MFGM content.

Screening the Active Phytochemicals From Eclipta prostrata and Unraveling Their Molecular Insight Into Human Malignancies.

Current drugs against multiple human malignancies are limited, and developing new treatment strategies is improbable within a short time. So, considering the current situation, phytochemicals could be a viable option for developing chemotherapeutic agents for managing numerous types of malignancies. Therefore, we aimed to locate all phytochemicals of Eclipta prostrata and unravel their chemotherapeutic mechanisms and strategies individually. We defined 25 active compounds based on their anticancer activities after filtering through IMPPAT and literature search, and these compounds have chemoth

INTRODUCTION: Plantaginis Herba (PH) is a traditional Chinese herb with broad pharmacological effects and has been used to treat hypertension. Salt-sensitive hypertension (SS-HT) is characterized by elevated blood pressure due to a high-salt diet and sodium intake. This study investigates the role and molecular mechanisms of PH in SS-HT-induced renal injury using network pharmacology and in vivo experiments. METHODS: The components of PH and potential therapeutic targets were identified through network pharmacology. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and Herb-CompoundsTargets-Disea

Application of bioinformatics analysis and molecular docking to study the mechanism of Qingying decoction in treating psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Qingying decoction (QYD) is a traditional prescription in China that has been shown to be effective in treating psoriasis. However, its mechanism of action remains to be elucidated. METHODS: The active ingredients and targets of QYD were obtained from TCMSP database, HERB database and SwissTargetPrediction database, respectively. Differential expression gene (DEGs) analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) were used to identify key genes associated with psoriasis. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed using STRING platform. Gene Ontology

Network Pharmacology Analysis of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Treating Psoriasis: Identifying Core Components, Mechanisms, and Dosing Patterns.

CONTEXT: Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammation-mediated skin disease. The use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the treatment of psoriasis boasts a rich historical tradition. Researchers widely use network pharmacology to reveal the action mechanisms of TCM by establishing an interaction network-drug-component-target-disease. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to use a network pharmacology approach to investigate the interaction between TCM and its targets in psoriasis, aiming to identify core drugs and mechanisms underlying TCM's treatment of common psoriasis and to create a new TCM formula.
