A group of 8 dogs was treated with an imidacloprid/flumethrin collar (Seresto(®)) 28 days prior to infestation with adult Dermacentor reticulatus ticks, infected with Babesia canis. The ability of the collar to prevent transmission of B. canis in the treated group was compared to an untreated control group. All 8 dogs in the untreated control group became infected with B. canis parasites, which were detected in blood smears as early as day 6 post tick-application. All control dogs developed clinical signs of babesiosis and were rescue-treated with imidocarb dipropionate. These dogs also develo

BACKGROUND: Tick infestations can cause direct deleterious effects to dogs as a result of tick blood-feeding, and indirectly ticks can transmit disease agents that can be detrimental to the health of both dogs and humans. Six laboratory studies were conducted to support dosage selection and efficacy confirmation of a novel combination of sarolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel against four tick species that commonly infest dogs in Europe.
METHODS: Two studies were conducted against Dermacentor reticulatus (one of which was a dose determination study), two against Ixodes ricinus, and one each again

BACKGROUND: Milbemycins, a group of 16-membered macrolides with potent anthelminthic and insecticidal activity, are produced by several Streptomyces and used widely in agricultural, medical and veterinary fields. Milbemycin A3 and A4, the main components produced by Streptomyces bingchenggensis, have been developed as an acaricide to control mites. The subsequent structural modification of milbemycin A3/A4 led to other commercial products, such as milbemycin oxime, lepimectin and latidectin. Despite its importance, little is known about the regulation of milbemycin biosynthesis, which has hamp

The fate of the acaricide fenbutatin oxide (FBTO) during the elaboration of white wine is evaluated. Matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) and solid-phase microextraction (SPME) were used as sample preparation techniques applied to the semi-solid and the liquid matrices involved in this research, respectively. Selective determination of FBTO was achieved by gas chromatography with atomic emission detection (GC-AED). GC coupled to mass spectrometry was also used to establish the identity of FBTO by-products detected in must and wine samples. MSPD extractions were accomplished using C18 as disper

Rhipicephalus microplus tick is the main ectoparasite of cattle in Brazil. The exhaustive use of chemical acaricides to control this tick has favored the selection of resistant tick populations. Entomopathogenic fungi, as Metarhizium anisopliae, has been described as a potential biocontroller of ticks. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vivo efficacy of two oil based formulations of M. anisopliae for the control of the cattle tick R. microplus under field conditions using a cattle spray race as a method of treatment. Initially, in vitro assays were carried out with an aque

BACKGROUND: Two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) is one of the most important plant pests in the world. Due to increased resistance of mites to acaricides, it is necessary to use other methods such as inducing resistance in plants by natural compounds for pests' management. Polyamins such as spermine are effective in increasing plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors. In this research, the effect of spermine treatments in cucumber plants on life table parameters of T. urticae was investigated. Also, top-down effect of spermine and T. urticae on cucumber

In recent years, there has been a significant increase related to pesticide residues in foods, which may increase the risks to the consumer of these foods with the different quality and concentrations of pesticide residues. Pesticides are used for controlling pests that reduce yields. On the other hand, it has become a major public health concern due to its toxic properties. Thus, the objective of the current study employed the application of Quick Easy Cheap Effective Rugged Safe (QuEChERS) method, in combination with gas and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric detection (GCMSMS,

Varroatosis, caused by the Varroa destructor mite, is currently the most dangerous parasitic disease threatening the survival of honey bees worldwide. Its adverse effect on the welfare and health of honey bees requires the regular use of specific acaricides. This condition has led to a growing development of resistance phenomena towards the most frequently used drugs. In addition, another important aspect that should not be understated, is the toxicity and persistence of chemicals in the environment. Therefore, the identification of viable and environmentally friendly alternatives is urgently

Tick distribution and abundance is influenced by several factors that include micro-climate and environmental and host factors. Contextual understanding of the role played by these factors is critical to guide control measures. The aim of this study was to determine the predictive value of these factors for changes in tick distribution and abundance at the livestock-wildlife interface of the lower Okavango Delta. A two-stage quota sampling design was adopted to select 30 clusters of seven cattle each for tick investigation. Tick investigation was done by lifting the tail to count the total num

Tick infestation may cause several problems including affecting domestic animal health and reducing the production of meat and milk, among others. Resistance to several classes of acaricides have been reported, forcing researchers to search for alternative measures, such as vaccines against ticks, to ensure tick control while having no or at least low negative impacts on the environment and public health. However, the current commercially available vaccines in different strains of Rhipicephalus microplus are reported to be of low efficacy. Fortunately, reverse vaccinology approaches have shown

BACKGROUND: Tick control is an essential aspect of controlling the spread of tick-borne diseases affecting humans and animals, but it presently faces several challenges. Development of an anti-tick vaccine is aimed at designing cost-effective and environmentally friendly protection against ticks and tick-borne diseases as an alternative to the use of chemical acaricides. A single vaccine from the tick midgut protein Bm86 is currently available for field applications, but its efficacy is limited to only some tick species. Identification of candidate vaccine antigens that can affect multiple tic

Etoxazole (C21H23F2NO2) is a fluorinated insecticide/acaricide that acts as an inhibitor of chitin biosynthesis. Its degradation products include several persistent environmental contaminants, including a metabolite designated 'R7' (C19H25F2NO3), which has a readily protonated amine group, to give the R7H+ cation, namely, 2-aza-niumyl-2-(4-tert-butyl-2-eth-oxy-phen-yl)ethyl 2,6-di-fluoro-benzoate. This paper reports the crystal structures of two salts of R7H+: the bromide (I: C21H26F2NO3 +·Br-) and the 3-carb-oxy-prop-2-enoate (hereafter fumarate) (II: C21H26F2NO3 +·C4H3O4 -). Although the R7H
