Health and disease: exploring the relation between parasitic infections, child nutrition status, and markets.

Research in bioarchaeology and among living people provides insight into the biological and biocultural consequences of subsistence, political, and economic transitions. Central to this effort is examining infectious disease, such as diarrheal disease, respiratory infections, and parasitic infections because they are an important source of nutritional and energetic stress in both past and current groups. Although infection may not always result in overt disease, frequent exposure results in biological stress with a negative effect on child growth and, by extension, health. The goal of this art…

Fronto-ethmoidal encephalocele in a historical skull with artificial deformation and no signs of chronic elevated intracranial pressure.

The intentional deformation of human skulls in the living being was one of the most curious rituals performed in historical and ancient times. It is thought that these practices cause chronic elevated intracranial pressure and subsequent symptoms of cognitive impairment. In this report, we examine such an artificially deformed skull dating from the sixteenth century that in addition shows a fronto-ethmoidal encephalocele. However, although the mild encephalocele was already manifest at birth and deformation practices were performed over years, the encephalocele did not progress into a more sev

Gastrointestinal parasites of domestic sheep from Patagonia throughout historical times: A paleoparasitological approach.

Sheep husbandry in Patagonia, Argentina, started at the beginning of the 20th century from European settlers. Sanitary management is minimal, which has serious implications for the sheep health. Sheep can be infested by diverse parasites, with well over 150 species of internal and external parasites reported worldwide. Gastrointestinal parasitism is one of the most common and important infections in sheep concerning the health status, and is the cause of significant morbidity and mortality, which generates considerable production losses. The present work is the first paleoparasitological study

Computed Tomography Study of the Mummy of King Seqenenre Taa II: New Insights Into His Violent Death.

Seqenenre-Taa-II, The Brave, (c.1558-1553 BC) ruled Southern Egypt during the occupation of Egypt by the Hyksos. The mummy was physically examined and X-rayed in the 1960s, which showed severe head wounds that have prompted various theories about the circumstances of his death. We postulated that Computed Tomography (CT) study of Seqenenre-Taa-II's mummy would give insights into the circumstances of his death. We examined Seqenenre's mummy using CT and compared the findings with the archaeological literature as well as with five Asian weapons found in Tell-el-Dabaa. CT findings indicate that S

Ecological aspects of water impoundment in the tropics.

Recognition of the potentially harmful effects of water development in the tropics had led to increasing efforts to assess the environmental impact of such projects prior to construction. Decisions regarding the development or non-development of water resources must be based on sound investigation of both the long-and short-term effects of reservoir construction and operation. The environmental effects of water impoundment vary greatly with the characteristics of the region as well as the type of reservoir to be constructed (area and depth of reservoir, ratio of water inflow to storage). Of ma

A checklist of parasites of freshwater fish of the British Isles-Kennedy revisited, reviewed and reassessed.

This review addresses the current state of knowledge regarding freshwater fish parasites in the British Isles, highlighting the significant gap since Kennedy's seminal 1974 work (Journal of Fish Biology 6: 613-644). Despite subsequent efforts by others to produce checklists in 1992 and 2016, comprehensive updates to parasite distribution patterns and species records have been limited. The paper emphasises the importance of accurate parasite checklists for understanding the status of and changes to endemic species baselines, climate change impacts, managing fish translocations, and identifying

A modern phytolith reference collection for selected native Australian plants: Implications for vegetation reconstruction.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Phytolith analysis is widely applied in palaeoecological and archaeological research, but its interpretive strength depends on the availability of robust modern reference collections. This study expands the modern Australian phytolith reference collection by analysing 42 native plant species representing 24 families and 37 genera with emphasis on silicification patterns across major growth forms, including forbs, shrubs, trees, and C3 grasses. METHODS: Phytoliths were extracted from available plant parts, including leaves, stems, flowers, seeds, seed pods, cones, and root

A Scoping Review of Male Fertility Assessment and Treatment Across Historical and Contemporary Paradigms.

BACKGROUND: Male factor infertility accounts for up to 50% of couples' inability to conceive. Despite this significant burden, perspectives on male fertility have evolved over millennia, shaped by cultural, medical, and scientific frameworks. Tracing this trajectory illuminates how historical observations laid the foundations for modern andrological science. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review maps the evolution of male fertility research from ancient civilizations through contemporary precision medicine approaches, identifying key paradigm shifts, persistent knowledge gaps, and emerging frontier

Forensic genetic investigation of human skeletal remains recovered from the La Belle shipwreck.

In 1995, the historical shipwreck of La Belle was discovered off the coast of Texas. One partial human skeleton was recovered from alongside cargo in the rear portion of the ship; a second (complete) skeleton was found atop coiled anchor rope in the bow. In late 2015, comprehensive forensic genetic testing began on multiple samplings from each set of remains. For the partial skeleton recovered from the ship's rear cargo area, results were obtained for 26/27 Y-STRs using traditional CE; with MPS technology, results were obtained for 18/24 Y-STRs, 56/56 ancestry-informative SNPs (aiSNPs), 22/22

Species Identification of Bovine, Ovine and Porcine Type 1 Collagen; Comparing Peptide Mass Fingerprinting and LC-Based Proteomics Methods.

Collagen is one of the most ubiquitous proteins in the animal kingdom and the dominant protein in extracellular tissues such as bone, skin and other connective tissues in which it acts primarily as a supporting scaffold. It has been widely investigated scientifically, not only as a biomedical material for regenerative medicine, but also for its role as a food source for both humans and livestock. Due to the long-term stability of collagen, as well as its abundance in bone, it has been proposed as a source of biomarkers for species identification not only for heat- and pressure-rendered animal

DNA extraction: an anthropologic aspect of bone remains from sixth- to seventh-century ad bone remains.

In the archeological site of the early Christian Episcopal complex of Saint Peter, in Canosa di Puglia (Bari, Italy), during the operations of archaeological excavations, tombs were discovered. They were dated between the sixth and seventh centuries ad with carbon 14 methodology. Five skeletons were found in the 5 tombs: 28A: male individual, 43 years old. The height was 170 cm; the biomass was 65.7 kg. The analysis of the bones indicated several noteworthy pathologies, such as a number of hypoplasia lines of the enamel, the presence of Schmorl hernias on the first 2 lumbar vertebrae, and the

Age estimation of adults from dental radiographs.

Previous studies have shown that with advancing age the size of the dental pulp cavity is reduced as a result of secondary dentine deposit, so that measurements of this reduction can be used as an indicator of age. The aim of the present study was to find a method which could be used to estimate the chronological age of an adult from measurements of the size of the pulp on full mouth dental radiographs. The material consisted of periapical radiographs from 100 dental patients who had attended the clinics of the Dental Faculty in Oslo. The radiographs of six types of teeth from each jaw were me

Paleopathological Study of Dwarfism-Related Skeletal Dysplasia in a Late Joseon Dynasty (South Korean) Population.

Skeletal dysplasias related to genetic etiologies have rarely been reported for past populations. This report presents the skeletal characteristics of an individual with dwarfism-related skeletal dysplasia from South Korea. To assess abnormal deformities, morphological features, metric data, and computed tomography scans are analyzed. Differential diagnoses include achondroplasia or hypochondroplasia, chondrodysplasia, multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, thalassemia-related hemolytic anemia, and lysosomal storage disease. The diffused deformities in the upper-limb bones and several coarsened featur

Past Intestinal Parasites.

This chapter aims to provide some key points for researchers interested in the study of ancient gastrointestinal parasites. These few pages are dedicated to my colleague and friend, Prof. Adauto Araújo (1951-2015), who participated in the writing of this chapter. His huge efforts in paleoparasitology contributed to the development and promotion of the discipline during more than 30 years.

The influence of activity levels on humeral retroversion: a bioarchaeological study.

Increases in humeral retroversion have been suggested to result from certain shoulder activities, especially throwing. Could retroversion also increase as a result of other upper extremity activities in addition to throwing? It was the purpose of this study to investigate humeral retroversion in the Nubian Tombos population (1400656 BCE) and correlate retroversion with entheseal changes which are used as an assessment of physical activity. Humeral retroversion was measured from photographs. Two photographs were used to define angles from the bony landmarks relative to the table surface, one di

Chinese ethnic dance therapy: cultural anthropology and health science perspectives on Tujia ethnic dances.

INTRODUCTION: Archaeological findings witness the anthropological roots of dance, while psychological, medical, cultural and aesthetic studies shed light on health promoting capacities and curative factors inhering in symbolic and expressive body movement. Since dance therapy became a multifaceted discipline in the middle of the 20th century, increasing evidence of beneficial effects has advocated the use of dance therapy in a broad spectrum of clinical and public health areas such as psychiatry, oncology, neurology, cardiology and geriatrics. Psychological and neurophysiological studies eluci

Mortality analysis of Pleistocene bears and its paleoanthropological relevance.

Bear bones and Paleolithic stone artefacts often co-occur in Pleistocene cave deposits of Eurasia, raising the question of how these associations come about and the need for effective methods with which to obtain a clear answer. Building upon knowledge of modern bears, I present a method for testing two competing hypotheses about the causes of bear mortality in hibernation contexts. The first hypothesis proposes that age-dependent deaths resulted from non-violent causes (principally starvation), implying that bears' presence in a cave was not linked in time to human activities there. The secon

Aberrant face and gaze habituation in fragile x syndrome.

Omphacinon, the oil from unripe olives (Olea europaea L.), occupied a privileged position in Mediterranean materia medica from the Hellenistic period to the late Middle Ages. Sources in Greek, Latin, Aramaic, Hebrew, and Arabic record its use in oral hygiene, dermatological care, antiperspirant preparations, and as a base for medicinal ointments and perfumes; Dioscorides identifies it as the oil best suited to medicinal use. Despite cost and lower yield, ancient practitioners preferred unripe fruit. A preference persisting across more than a millennium and across different medical traditions r

Im Osten etwas Neues: Anthropological analysis of remains of German soldiers from 1915-1918.

In the summer of 2005, exhumation and identification of the remains of German soldiers was performed in Panevezys (Northern Lithuania). Historical data indicate that in autumn of 1915 the building of a local gymnasium was transformed into a military hospital, and casualties were buried in its garden. The hospital functioned until the German withdrawal in the winter 1918. Archaeological finds include ID tags, personal items, residues of uniforms and medical devices. Routine anthropological analysis was performed on the site, as the remains had to be ready for scheduled reburial the same summer.
