The effects of internal jugular vein compression for modulating and preserving white matter following a season of American tackle football: A prospective longitudinal evaluation of differential head impact exposure.

The purpose of this clinical trial was to examine whether internal jugular vein compression (JVC)-using an externally worn neck collar-modulated the relationships between differential head impact exposure levels and pre- to postseason changes in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-derived diffusivity and anisotropy metrics of white matter following a season of American tackle football. Male high-school athletes (n = 284) were prospectively assigned to a non-collar group or a collar group. Magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from participants pre- and postseason and head impact exposure w

Delayed diagnosis of pyoderma gangrenosum: a case study.

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PD) is a rare, chronic, relapsing, ulcerative, neutrophilic cutaneous disease and may be difficult to recognize. It is not uncommon for PD to be mistakenly diagnosed as vascular occlusive or venous disease, vasculitis, cancer, infection, exogenous tissue injury, or other inflammatory disorders. A 55-year-old woman with a 5-year history of a very painful and enlarging ulcer presented at the authors' clinic. Previously, based on an original diagnosis of venous ulcer, the wound had been surgically debrided and managed with saline-soaked gauze and compression therapy. After t

A histological study on the effect of pressure therapy on the activities of myofibroblasts and keratinocytes in hypertrophic scar tissues after burn.

Although pressure therapy (PT) has been widely used as the first-line treatment for hypertrophic scars (HS), the histopathological changes involved have seldom been studied. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal effect of PT on the histopathological changes in HS. Ten scar samples were selected from six patients with HS after burn and they were given a standardized PT intervention for 3 months while 16 scar samples were obtained on those without PT. The scar biopsies were collected pre-treatment, 1 and 3 months post-intervention for both clinical and histopathological examinations. Clin

Improving cutaneous scar formation by controlling the mechanical environment: large animal and phase I studies.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the mechanical environment of cutaneous wounds can control scar formation. BACKGROUND: Mechanical forces have been recognized to modulate myriad biologic processes, but the role of physical force in scar formation remains unclear. Furthermore, the therapeutic benefits of offloading cutaneous wounds with a device have not been rigorously tested. METHODS: A mechanomodulating polymer device was utilized to manipulate the mechanical environment of closed cutaneous wounds in red Duroc swine. After 8 weeks, wounds subjected to different mechanical stress stat

Heel kicking exercise rapidly improves pain and function in patients with acute lateral ankle sprain: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprain is one of the common traumatic injuries in daily life, and PRICE (protection, rest, ice, compression pressure bandaging, elevation of the affected limb) principle is routinely recommended at its early stage. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), bone-setting technique (BST) can quickly relieve ankle pain and improve walking function, but physicians require high skills and physical strength. In this study, we designed an exercise-heel kicking exercise (HKE) based on the principles and methods of BST. This study aims to observe its true efficacy and safety. METHODS: 68

Surgical Repair of Traumatic Rupture of Tibialis Posterior Tendon in 32-Year-Old Male.

INTRODUCTION: This article reports a case of surgical repair of traumatic rupture of tibialis posterior (TP) tendon in a young healthy male after alleged history of grinder (heavy machine) injury over the foot, with the help of a suture anchor and running whip stitch followed by immobilization in a below knee slab postoperatively. The acute rupture of the TP tendon (TPT), compared to an acute rupture of the Achilles tendon, is a quite uncommon disease to be diagnosed in the emergency department setting. In most cases symptoms related to a TP dysfunction, like weakness, pain along the course of

A bioengineered living cell construct activates metallothionein/zinc/MMP8 and inhibits TGFβ to stimulate remodeling of fibrotic venous leg ulcers.

Venous leg ulcers (VLU) represent a major clinical unmet need, impairing quality of life for millions worldwide. The bioengineered bilayered living cell construct (BLCC) is the only FDA-approved therapy demonstrating efficacy in healing chronic VLU, yet its in vivo mechanisms of action are not well understood. Previously, we reported a BLCC-mediated acute wounding response at the ulcer edge; in this study we elucidated the BLCC-specific effects on the epidermis-free ulcer bed. We conducted a randomized controlled clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01327937) enrolling 30 subjects with nonhea
