Quantification of potential exposure of gray partridge (Perdix perdix) to pesticide active substances in farmlands.

Estimating exposure of wild birds to plant protection products is of key importance in the risk assessment process evaluating their harmful potential. In this paper, we propose an ecologically-relevant methodology to estimate potential exposure to active substances (ASs) of a farmland focal bird, the gray partridge Perdix perdix. It is based on bird habitat use of fields at the time of pesticide applications. It accounts for spatio-temporal heterogeneity at population and landscape scales. We identify and quantify the potential exposure to 179 ASs of 140 clutches during pre-laying, laying, and

Metabolic consequences of knocking out UGT85B1, the gene encoding the glucosyltransferase required for synthesis of dhurrin in Sorghum bicolor (L. Moench).

Many important food crops produce cyanogenic glucosides as natural defense compounds to protect against herbivory or pathogen attack. It has also been suggested that these nitrogen-based secondary metabolites act as storage reserves of nitrogen. In sorghum, three key genes, CYP79A1, CYP71E1 and UGT85B1, encode two Cytochrome P450s and a glycosyltransferase, respectively, the enzymes essential for synthesis of the cyanogenic glucoside dhurrin. Here, we report the use of targeted induced local lesions in genomes (TILLING) to identify a line with a mutation resulting in a premature stop codon in

Extracellular lipids of Camelina sativa: characterization of chloroform-extractable waxes from aerial and subterranean surfaces.

Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz is an emerging low input, stress tolerant crop with seed oil composition suitable for biofuel and bioproduct production. The chemical compositions and ultrastructural features of surface waxes from C. sativa aerial cuticles, seeds, and roots were analyzed using gas chromatography and microscopy. Alkanes, primary fatty alcohols, and free fatty acids were common components of all analyzed organs. A particular feature of leaf waxes was the presence of alkyl esters of long-chain fatty acids and very long-chain fatty alcohols, ranging from C38 to C50 and dominated by C42

[Reliability of self-reported information by farmers on pesticide use].

OBJECTIVES: Exposure assessment is a major challenge faced by studies that evaluate the association between pesticide exposure and adverse health outcomes. The objective of this study was to investigate the reliability of information that farmers self-report regarding their pesticide use. METHODS: Twenty five items based upon existing questionnaires were designed to focus on pesticide exposure. In 2009 a self-administrated survey was conducted on two occasions four weeks apart among 205 farmers residing in Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces. For a reliability measure, we calculated the percentage

Streptomyces fungicidicus-derived secondary metabolites as an antiviral agent to alleviate zucchini yellow mosaic virus in squash.

Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) poses a significant threat to squash crops, causing severe symptoms and substantial yield losses. This study investigates the potential of Streptomyces fungicidicus as a biocontrol agent for managing ZYMV in squash plants by inducing systemic resistance. Approximately 95% of field-collected squash samples were positive for ZYMV, exhibiting chlorotic mottling, vein banding, and leaf distortion. The virus was isolated, purified, and confirmed through RT-PCR (Accession no. PV131044) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which displayed flexuous, filamento

Effect of High Pressures in Combination with Temperature on the Inactivation of Spores of Nonproteolytic Clostridium botulinum Types B and F.

The impact of high pressure processing on the inactivation of spores of nonproteolytic Clostridium botulinum is important in extended shelf life chilled low-acid foods. The three most resistant C. botulinum strains (Ham-B, Kap 9-B, and 610-F) were selected for comparison of their thermal and pressure-assisted thermal resistance after screening 17 nonproteolytic C. botulinum strains (8 type B, 7 type E, and 2 type F). Spores of strains Ham-B, Kap 9-B, and 610-F were prepared using a biphasic media method, diluted in N-(2-acetamido)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid (ACES) buffer (0.05 M, pH 7.00) to 1

Assessment of behaviour, performance, and blood parameters in Japanese quail under toxic stress of imidacloprid and its modulation by vitamin B complex.

Pesticides are classified as a major source of contamination and a substantial risk to both humans and animals. The fourth generation of pesticides is the neonicoetinoid insecticides. Imidacloprid is a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide utilized in crop protection. The current study was conducted to assess behaviour, performance, and some blood parameters due to long-term use of sub-lethal doses of IM in Japanese quails and the protective impact of vitamin B complex. Non-sexed, one day-old chicks were split into three groups of 45 each. Oral administration of imidacloprid in water at dose o

Genome-wide CRISPRi screen and proteomic profiling identify key genes related to ferulic acid's antifungal activity.

Fungal pathogens of plants must overcome host-imposed stressors, including antimicrobial small molecules. Ferulic acid (FA), a plant-derived phenolic compound, induces fungal stress and cell death. To uncover genetic determinants of FA sensitivity, we performed a genome-wide CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) screen in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We confirmed that FA impairs yeast growth and triggers stress granule marker sequestration, establishing a relevant selection condition. The CRISPRi screen identified 194 genes involved in the FA-induced stress response and 12 whose repression enhanced resis

Xanthomonas encodes for a novel dodecameric ferritin-like protein with unique structural features.

Iron is considered an essential component of all life forms, but is maintained optimally by fine-tuning of iron homeostasis mechanisms. Iron storage proteins (ISPs), which are ferritin superfamily proteins, play a pivotal role in maintaining iron homeostasis by storing excess cellular iron, often serving as ROS scavengers for protecting cells from oxidative stress. Xanthomonas represents a large and ubiquitous group of phytopathogenic bacteria that causes severe crop loss worldwide. Xanthomonas survives host-imposed iron stress by governing iron uptake, transport, and metabolism in utmost coor

Metabolic Reprogramming in Cucumis metuliferus Roots and Rhizosphere Identifies Candidate Metabolites That Reduce Meloidogyne incognita Infection.

Root-knot nematode causes severe yield losses in cucumber and other cucurbits. The wild relative Cucumis metuliferus exhibits strong resistance, but the metabolic basis of this resistance and the potential of resistance-associated metabolites to protect susceptible crops remains poorly understood. Here, we compared host status, phenolic content, and untargeted metabolomes of roots and rhizosphere soils of C. metuliferus and C. sativus upon Meloidogyne incognita infection. C. metuliferus showed delayed nematode development, fewer galls, and a lower reproduction factor compared with C. sativus,

Co-application of selenium and hydrogen sulfide confers PEG-induced drought stress tolerance in tomato plants by safeguarding photosynthetic apparatus and modulating proline metabolism and antioxidant systems.

Drought stress is a major environmental constraint that adversely affects plant growth, photosynthesis, and metabolic homeostasis. This study investigated the effects of co-application of selenium (Se; Na2SeO4; through soil) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S; NaHS; through foliage) on alleviating polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced drought stress in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants. Plants exposed to PEG (20 and 30%) significantly reduced plant growth, photosynthetic performance, chlorophyll-related indices, and membrane stability while increasing oxidative stress. However, the co-application of

Corn rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) emergence patterns, survival, and injury in blended refuges and pure stands of short-stature corn and tall corn.

BACKGROUND: Short-stature corn became commercially available in the United States in 2025 and has several desirable qualities including lodging resistance and potential for greater planting density. Corn rootworm, Diabrotica spp., are among the most serious insect pests of corn in the United States. However, information about how corn rootworm interact with short-stature corn is currently lacking. To protect crops from rootworm injury, transgenic corn that produces insecticidal toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is frequently grown. An important component of insect resistance mana

Occurrence of bean fly (Diptera: Agromyzidae) and associated parasitoids in Kenya: farmers' perspectives and management practices.

Outbreaks of bean fly, Ophiomyia spp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae) constitute a major constraint to common bean production in sub-Saharan Africa. Here, we investigate bean fly occurrence patterns, associated parasitoid complexes, and smallholder farmer perspectives across 3 major bean corridors. Three bean fly species [O. phaseoli (Tyron), O. spencerella (Greathead), and O. centrosematis (de Meijere)] were identified. An incidence of 22% to 41% was recorded, mostly associated with O. spencerella, which accounted for up to 57.1% of total species abundance. A diverse assemblage of parasitoids was reco

Quantification of Pesticides and In Vitro Effects of Water-Soluble Fractions of Agricultural Soils in South Africa.

Although agrochemicals protect crops and reduce losses, these chemicals can migrate to non-target environments via run-off and leaching following irrigation or heavy rainfall, where non-target organisms can be exposed to a mixture of water-soluble compounds. This study investigated whether the water-soluble fractions of selected agricultural soils from South Africa contain quantifiable concentrations of four commonly used pesticides, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), atrazine, dicamba and imidacloprid, and whether the aqueous extracts induce effects in vitro. Effects investigated include

Cyclophilin 20-3 coordinates plant root hair growth and resistance against parasitic nematodes.

Plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) are a major threat to agriculturally important crops, resulting in substantial yield losses and economic repercussions. However, the underlying modes of plant-PPN interactions remain largely elusive. Here, we describe a critical role of cyclophilin (CYP)20-3, a plastid dual enzyme [i.e., peptidyl-prolyl isomerase (PPIase) and reductase) in plant basal resistance against PPN attacks. Originally, in order to define a present working model of whether plant roots deploy hypersensitive response (HR) to restrict PPN infections, we co-imaged the 'real-time' interaction

Antioxidant capacities and in vitro anti-microbial activities of rice (Oryza sativa var Bajong) from Borneo.

Rice contains antioxidants and phenolic components that exert anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. Different geographical areas produce rice with various chemical constituents and phytochemicals, in turn these confer differential protective effects including antimicrobial and anticancer properties. Sarawak rice, Oryza sativa var Bajong (Bajong), a fragrant dark purple rice grain harvested from two locations in Sarawak, namely interior Lubok Nibong (LN) and coastal Sri Aman (SA), was assessed for their antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activities. The rice was extracted using met

Antibacterial activity and mechanism of novel berberine derivative HBBR-F4 against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. Oryzae.

BACKGROUND: Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), the causal agent of rice bacterial blight, poses a significant threat to global crop security by means of systemic vascular colonization. In order to address emerging resistance challenges, a rational drug design strategy was employed, which involved structurally optimizing the natural alkaloid berberine (BBR). Through a C-9/C-13 dual-site modification approach, we developed a novel berberine derivative, 9-benzoyloxy-13-(4-(tert-butyl)benzyl)-berberine bromide (HBBR-F4). This compound demonstrated exceptional anti-Xoo efficacy, achieving protect
