INTRODUCTION: Ambrosia trifida, a harmful invasive plant, poses significant ecological and economic threats and is expected to spread further under future warming and nitrogen deposition scenarios. According to plant-soil feedback and enhanced mutualist hypothesis, invasive plants may gain a competitive edge by recruiting specific microorganisms. However, little is known about the composition and functional potential of its rhizosphere microbiome.
METHODS: In this study, we combined metagenomics with widely targeted metabolomics to investigate the interactions between root exudates and soil m

This study evaluated the effects of air nanobubbles and conventional aeration on emissions of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and ammonia (NH3) from dairy lagoon wastewater. Wastewater collected from a commercial dairy in California was treated in duplicate drum systems under nanobubbles aeration, conventional aeration, and control (no aeration) over 31 days. Nanobubbles aeration significantly reduced CH4 emissions rates by 66.7% compared with the control. However, the reduction was not statistically significant relative to conventional aeration, although the average

While composting is widely used for the resource recovery of organic waste, it is complicated by greenhouse gas and odor emissions. An integrated analysis of emission characteristics and elemental metabolism mechanisms is essential for targeted control strategies. Using integrated metagenomics and modular network analysis, this study identified the biotic and abiotic factors driving gaseous emissions. Results showed that methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions mainly occurred during the mesophilic and cooling stages, whereas ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) peaked at the thermo

One of the challenges for climate-smart agriculture and ecosystem restoration is mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study evaluated how plant-microbe interactions mitigate GHG emissions in terrestrial soils and identified the biological mechanisms underpinning these effects. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. We retrieved 2,647 studies, and 24 met the inclusion criteria. We assessed study quality using predefined criteria and synthesized findings using a semi-quantita

Octocorals are vital components of tropical, temperate, and cold-water benthic marine ecosystems. Their associated microbiomes, comprising microeukaryotes, prokaryotes, and viruses, are increasingly recognised as central to host health, nutrient cycling, and chemical defence. Metagenomics and amplicon sequencing have uncovered taxonomic and functional complexity within these microbial communities, revealing patterns of host specificity and health status, along with seasonality and geographic structuring. However, anthropogenic stressors, particularly those associated with global climate change

The mangrove ecosystems store a significant amount of "blue carbon" to mitigate global climate change, but also serve as hotspots for greenhouse gases (GHGs: CO2, CH4 and N2O) production. The CH4 and N2O emissions offset mangrove carbon benefits, however, the extent of this effect remains inadequately quantified. By applying the 36 h time-series observations and mapping cruises, here we investigated the spatial and temporal distribution of GHGs and their fluxes in Dongzhaigang (DZG) bay, the largest mangrove ecosystem in China, at tidal and monthly scales. The spatiotemporal variation of GHGs

Climate change is altering precipitation regimes that control nitrogen (N) cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. In ecosystems exposed to frequent drought, N can accumulate in soils as they dry, stimulating the emission of both nitric oxide (NO; an air pollutant at high concentrations) and nitrous oxide (N2O; a powerful greenhouse gas) when the dry soils wet up. Because changes in both N availability and soil moisture can alter the capacity of nitrifying organisms such as ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) to process N and emit N gases, predicting whether shifts in precipitation m

Epiphytes on seagrass leaves can render parts of the leaf phyllosphere anoxic in darkness owing to leaf/epiphyte respiration and O2 diffusion constraints. In such anoxic microenvironments, anaerobic microbes can potentially produce phytotoxins and greenhouse gases, but the actual occurrence of such processes in seagrass epiphytic biofilms remain uncertain. We used microsensors to measure O2, NO, N2O and H2S concentration gradients, as well as NO and O2 dynamics within epiphytic biofilms on seagrass (Zostera marina) leaves under changing environmental conditions. The bacterial community composi

While energy consumption and its associated carbon emission should be minimized in wastewater treatment, it has a much lower priority than human and environmental health, which are both closely related to efficient water quality management. So conservation of surface water quality and quantity are more important for sustainable development than green house gas (GHG) emissions per se. In this paper, two urban water management strategies to conserve fresh water quality and quantity are considered: (1) source separation of urine for improved water quality and (2) saline (e.g. sea) water toilet fl

BACKGROUND: The two-component BvrR/BvrS system is essential for Brucella abortus virulence. It was shown previously that its dysfunction alters the expression of some major outer membrane proteins and the pattern of lipid A acylation. To determine the genes regulated by BvrR/BvrS, we performed a whole-genome microarray analysis using B. abortus RNA obtained from wild type and bvrR mutant cells grown in the same conditions.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A total of 127 differentially expressed genes were found: 83 were over expressed and 44 were less expressed in the bvrR mutant. Two operons,

Among prokaryotes, the large vacuolated marine sulphur bacteria are unique in their ability to store, transport and metabolize significant quantities of sulphur, nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon compounds. In this study, unresolved questions of metabolism, storage management and behaviour were addressed in laboratory experiments with Thioploca species collected on the continental shelf off Chile. The Thioploca cells had an aerobic metabolism with a potential oxygen uptake rate of 1760 micromol O2 per dm(3) biovolume per h, equivalent to 4.4 nmol O2 per min per mg protein. When high ambient sulp

Liquid manure (slurry) storages are sources of gases such as ammonia (NH(3)) and methane (CH(4)). Danish slurry storages are required to be covered to reduce NH(3) emissions and often a floating crust of straw is applied. This study investigated whether physical properties of the crust or crust microbiology had an effect on the emission of the potent greenhouse gases CH(4) and nitrous oxide (N(2)O) when crust moisture was manipulated ("dry", "moderate", and "wet"). The dry crust had the deepest oxygen penetration (45 mm as compared to 20 mm in the wet treatment) as measured with microsensors,

Occurrence and fate of 45 pesticides and 40 pesticide degradates were investigated in four contrasting agricultural settings--in Maryland, Nebraska, California, and Washington. Primary crops included corn at all sites, soybeans in Maryland, orchards in California and Washington, and vineyards in Washington. Pesticides and pesticide degradates detected in water samples from all four areas were predominantly from two classes of herbicides--triazines and chloroacetanilides; insecticides and fungicides were not present in the shallow ground water. In most samples, pesticide degradates greatly exce

There is continuing concern over potential impacts of widespread application of nutrients and pesticides on ground- and surface-water quality. Transport and fate of nitrate and pesticides were investigated in a shallow aquifer and adjacent stream, Cow Castle Creek, in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. Pesticide and pesticide degradate concentrations were detected in ground water with greatest frequency and largest concentrations directly beneath and downgradient from the corn (Zea mays L.) field where they were applied. In almost all samples in which they were detected, concentrations of pest

This study addresses a critical knowledge gap regarding the role of biogeochemical processes in low-temperature thermally enhanced bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater. A pilot-scale in situ thermally enhanced bioremediation test via hot water injection (ISTEB-HW) was conducted at a representative contaminated site to evaluate its performance and underlying mechanisms. ISTEB-HW achieved efficient removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), benzene and ethylbenzene within approximately four months, meeting their cleanup targets except for a residual benzene concentration

The mucosal surfaces of aquatic animals serve as a functional barrier between the host and the aquatic environment, hosting diverse microbial communities that play pivotal roles in host health. In this study, amplicon libraries of the 16S rRNA gene were constructed to investigate the compositional differences between the microbial communities presented in four mucosal surfaces (gills, skin, gut, and ovary) of spawning female olive flounder. To elucidate the unique roles of commensal microbes in external and internal organs, we used PICRUSt2 and ALDEx2, respectively, to predict metabolic functi

Brucella abortus maintains an N-acetyl homoserine lactone quorum sensing system that consists of two LuxR proteins, VjbR and BabR, as well as two signals, dodecanoyl (C12 AHL) and 3-oxododecanoyl (3-OXO-C12 AHL) homoserine lactone. This system regulates major virulence factors that influence the bacteria's survival during infection. We generated the first strain that lacks both LuxR proteins and found a synergistic interaction for survival in the chronic infection C57BL/6 mouse model. Transcriptomic analyses of the ∆vjbR∆babR double-deletion strain, as well as the cognate single-deletion strai

Perchlorate (ClO4-) mainly exists in the form of ammonium perchlorate in industrial production. However, the degradation mechanisms of different concentrations of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and ClO4- mixed pollutants in the environment are not well understood. This study aims to explore the potential of different types of carbon sources for ClO4- and NH4+-N biodegradation. Experimental results showed that the concentration and type of carbon sources are decisive to simultaneous removal of NH4+-N and ClO4-. Under condition of C(COD)/C(ClO4-) ratio of 21.15 ± 4.40, the simultaneously removal eff

Biofilters are the important source and sink of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) in the drinking water. Current studies generally ascribed the prevalence of BAR in biofilter from the perspective of gene behavior, i.e. horizontal gene transfer (HGT), little attentions have been paid on the ARGs carrier- ARB. In this study, we proposed the hypothesis that ARB participating in pollutant metabolism processes and becoming dominant is an important way for the enrichment of ARGs. To verify this, the antibiotic resistome and bacterial functional metabolic pat

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a promising candidate for heavy metal remediation, primarily composed of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). It has been demonstrated that g-C3N4 adjusts rhizosphere physicochemical conditions, especially N conditions, alleviating the absorption and accumulation of Cadmium (Cd) by soybeans. However, the mechanisms by which g-C3N4 induces N alterations to mitigates plant uptake of Cd remain unclear. This study investigated the impact of g-C3N4-mediated changes in N conditions on the accumulation of Cd by soybeans using pot experiments. It also explored the microbio
