BACKGROUND: Clostridium bolteae and Clostridium clostridioforme, previously included in the complex C. clostridioforme in the group Clostridium XIVa, remain difficult to distinguish by phenotypic methods. These bacteria, prevailing in the human intestinal microbiota, are opportunistic pathogens with various drug susceptibility patterns. In order to better characterize the two species and to obtain information on their antibiotic resistance genes, we analyzed the genomes of six strains of C. bolteae and six strains of C. clostridioforme, isolated from human infection.
RESULTS: The genome lengt

BACKGROUND: In the EU conventional cages for laying hens are forbidden beginning in January 2012, however concerns about a higher transmission rate of Salmonella in alternative cages systems have been raised. The extent to which cage systems may affect the intestinal microbiota of laying hens is not known, and different microbiota may demonstrate different resistance towards colonization with Salmonella. To investigate this, ileal and caecal samples from two experimental studies where laying hens were inoculated with Salmonella Enteritidis and housed in different systems (conventional cage, fu

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) is characterized by low microbial richness and diversity of the gut microbiome, shifts in the abundance of specific taxa, reduced presence of C2-C6 organic acid producers, especially butyrate-forming bacteria, and alterations in gut metabolites. This study aimed to demonstrate differences in the dynamics and fermentation activity of the fecal microbiota of CD patients and healthy individuals (HIs) grown in vitro on glucose or a mixture of acetate and lactate (fecal microbiota batch cultures). Glucose was used as a substrate for glycolytic fermentation, whereas

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) seems to be a promising approach in ulcerative colitis (UC) management with the aim of repopulating a patient's dysbiotic microbiota with beneficial bacteria and restore its metabolic activity to its healthy characteristics. Metabolites present after FMT may improve the function and integrity of the intestinal barrier, reduce inflammation, and thus induce remission in an UC patient. In this study we evaluated whether the Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®) model may be a suitable non-invasive alternative for studying

INTRODUCTION: Long-term feeding of a high-concentrate diet can induce subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) and hindgut acidosis in ruminants. However, at present, most studies focus on reducing rumen injury by adjusting the feed formula, adding buffers, probiotics, or enzyme preparations, and few studies pay attention to hindgut health. Sophora alopecuroides alkaloids have extensive anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The purpose of this experiment was to study the effects of adding total alkaloids of Sophora alopecuroides (TASA) to a high-concentrate diet on colon barrier function, antioxi

Weaning is a stressful event that is often accompanied by anorexia, risk of diarrhea, and development of intestinal disorders, making it crucial to provide highly digestible and palatable diets. Novel functional protein sources are being developed to be included in diets fed to weanling pigs. We evaluated in vitro and in vivo the properties of a recently developed hydrolyzed yeast protein source (Yela ProSecure; YPS; Lallemand SAS, Blagnac, France). The objectives were (1) to evaluate in vitro amino acids (AA) digestibility; (2) to assess, in vitro, the impact of the product's insoluble fracti

Background/Objectives: Stunting and weight faltering (WF) remain pressing public health challenges in low- and middle-income countries, with long-term consequences for child growth, development, and survival. While the role of gut health in early growth is increasingly recognized, evidence on how the gut microbiome and metabolome respond to nutritional interventions in WF infants is scarce. This study explored gut microbiome and metabolome changes in Indonesian infants aged 6-12 months who overcame WF following a one-month intervention. Methods: Infants were assigned to either a Nutritional Ad

The gut microbiome can modulate nutrient metabolism to produce many metabolites interacting with the host. However, the intricate interactions among dietary intake, the gut microbiome and metabolites, and host metabolites need to be further explored although some studies have been devoted to it. Here, in a cross-sectional studies, 88 children aged 2-12 years were enrolled from northwestern China. The dietary intake data were collected via a designed food frequency questionnaire to calculate plant-based diet indices (PDIs). Stool and plasma samples were collected for metagenomic and broad-targe

Dairy products are susceptible to modifications in protein oxidation during heat processing, which can lead to changes in protein function, subsequently affecting intestinal health. Despite being a unique nutritional source, yak milk has not been thoroughly examined for the effects of its oxidized proteins on intestinal microbiota and metabolism. Hence, this study employed different heat treatment methods (low-temperature pasteurization, high-temperature pasteurization, and high-temperature sterilization) to induce oxidation in yak milk proteins. The study then assessed the degree of oxidation

BACKGROUND: Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is the standard of care after total proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis (UC). Around 50% of patients will experience pouchitis, an idiopathic inflammatory condition. Antibiotics are the backbone of treatment of pouchitis; however, antibiotic-resistant pouchitis develops in 5-10% of those patients. It has been shown that fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an effective treatment for UC, but results for FMT antibiotic-resistant pouchitis are inconsistent.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to microbes early in life has long-lasting effects on microbial community structure and function of the microbiome. However, in commercial poultry settings chicks are reared as a single-age cohort with no exposure to adult birds which can have profound effects on microbiota development and subsequent pathogen challenge. Microbiota manipulation is a proven and promising strategy to help reduce pathogen load and transmission within broiler flocks. However, administration of microbiota transplant products in a hatchery setting may prove challenging. Effective administration s

Dietary fiber-degrading enzyme supplementation in broilers aims at off-setting the anti-nutritive effect of non-starch polysaccharides and at promoting broiler health. Recently, we demonstrated that xylanase/glucanase addition in wheat-based diet improved nutrient digestibility, arabinoxylan fermentability and broiler growth. Conversely, maize arabinoxylan was found to be recalcitrant to xylanase action. These findings suggested that enzyme-mediated improvement of nutrient digestion and carbohydrate fermentation depended on the cereal type present in the diet, and may have contributed to broil

This experiment investigated the effects of diet composition on rumen, vaginal, and uterine microbiota of beef heifers. Fifteen rumen-cannulated, pubertal Angus-influenced heifers were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design (28-d periods and 21-d washout intervals). Dietary treatments included diets based on (as-fed) 100% grass hay (HF), 60% grass hay + 40% corn-based concentrate (INT), or 25% grass hay + 75% corn-based concentrate (HG). Treatments were offered individually to heifers once daily at 2% body weight. Rumen, vaginal, and uterine samples were collected on days 0 and 28 of e

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Both inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) can be considered chronic immune disorders sharing common etiopathogenetic mechanisms. Changes in the composition of the intestinal microbiota, which can lead to an abnormal mucosal response, could be the missing link between these two diseases. Our study evaluate the composition of intestinal microbiota and to characterize gut dysbiosis in patients with IBD and AS.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective case-control study that enrolled 124 patients [20 Crohn's disease (CD), 27 ulcerative colitis (UC), 28

The objective of the present study was to investigate the ability of animal feed-grade sodium bisulfate (SBS) and a mixture of sodium bisulfate/tannin to inhibit the growth of Salmonella using an anerobic in vitro mixed cecal culture to mimic the conditions within the chicken cecum. An initial inoculum of Salmonella Typhimurium was introduced to an anerobic dilution solution containing 1/3000 diluted cecal bacteria and solids consisting of ground chicken feed and different percentages of solid SBS or SBS/tannin, and surviving organisms were enumerated. Two different experimental designs were e

Damage to the mucosal layer of the gut is a central feature of chronic inflammatory diseases, often resulting in gut dysbiosis, microbial imbalances, and dysregulated immunometabolism. Gut dysfunction significantly impacts human health, disrupting metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurological systems, and leading to metabolic syndrome. Here, we discuss two clinical entities that are apparently unrelated but actually share similar alterations to gut mucosal barrier integrity: inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We use the particular cases of pediatric IBD and

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DN), a severe complication of diabetes, is influenced by genetic, immune, and gut microbial factors but lacks targeted therapeutic strategies. Druggable genes (DGGs) present a promising avenue, yet their causal prioritization in DN and their connections to gut microbiota-metabolite mechanisms remain underexplored.
METHODS: This study utilized differential expression analysis to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs), Mendelian randomization (MR) to establish causal associations with DN, and machine learning algorithms to pinpoint key genes. Blood samp

BACKGROUND: Post-treatment weight gain and gut dysbiosis are important concerns in breast cancer patients. However, evidence on the gut microbiota in this population, particularly in relation to physical activity, is limited.
AIM: Therefore, we compared gut microbiota in breast cancer patients with obesity with healthy controls and non-cancer controls with obesity and subsequently examined the effects of a combined dance and dietary intervention on gut microbiota, metabolic health, physical fitness, and quality of life.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The observational part compared gut microbiota in b
