[Atypical agents of wound infection and targeted samples].

All open wounds are primarily contaminated and subsequently colonized by microorganisms, predominantly bacteria. Only about 30% of chronic wounds are also infected. Factors which favor the development of infection are the following: large quantity of bacteria, presence of virulence factors, their quantity and number, predominantly the synergy of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and formation of biofilm. Common agents of infection of acute and chronic wounds are Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA, Streptococcus beta-haemolyticus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacteroides spp., and Candida albicans. Differenc

Assignment of CDC weak oxidizer group 2 (WO-2) to the genus Pandoraea and characterization of three new Pandoraea genomospecies.

CDC weak oxidizer group 2 (WO-2) consists of nine phenotypically similar human clinical isolates received by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1989 and 1998. Four of the isolates were from blood, three were from sputum, and one each was from bronchial fluid and maxillary sinus. All are aerobic nonfermentative, motile gram-negative rods with one to eight polar flagella per cell. All grew at 25 and 35 degrees C and were positive for catalase, urease (usually delayed 3 to 7 days), citrate, alkalinization of litmus milk, oxidization of glycerol (weakly), and growth on MacConke

Wildfire of Soybean Caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci, a New Disease in Korea.

In 2006 and 2007, a new bacterial disease was observed in field-cultivated soybeans in Boeun District and Munkyung City of Korea. The disease caused severe blighting of soybean (Glycine max) leaves. Soybean leaves in fields showed yellowish spots with brown centers. Brown and dead areas of variable size and shape were surrounded by wide, yellow haloes with distinct margins. Spots might coalesce and affected leaves fell readily. Seven bacterial strains were isolated from chlorotic areas of soybean leaves and all produced white colonies on trypticase soy agar. With the Biolog Microbial Identific

Marinomonas algae sp. nov. and Marinomonas phycocola sp. nov., two novel bacteria isolated from marine algae.

Two novel bacterial strains, designated as 2405UD66-6T and 2405UD68-3T, were isolated from marine algae collected in the Republic of Korea. Both strains were Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, motile, rod-shaped and oxidase-positive. Optimal growth occurred at 28 °C and pH 7.0, with NaCl concentrations of 3.0-4.0% (w/v) for strain 2405UD66-6T and 2.0-3.0% (w/v) for strain 2405UD68-3T. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and phylogenomic analysis based on draft genome sequences revealed that strains 2405UD66-6ᵀ and 2405UD68-3ᵀ belong to the genus Marinomonas. Genomic insight into Anoxybacillus dikiliensis sp. nov., a hot spring isolate from Dikili exhibiting biotechnologically important features.

Gram-positive, thermophilic, endospore-forming, yellow, rod-shaped bacteria, D401aT and D404, were isolated from soil samples of a hot spring in Dikili, Izmir. They can synthesize silver nanoparticles and biotechnologically important thermostable alpha-amylase, alpha-glucosidase and nitrate reductase, which were also confirmed by in silico analyses. 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic analysis revealed that D401aT was most closely related to D404 (99.9%) and had less than 98.9% similarity to Anoxybacillus flavithermus DSM 2641T, Anoxybacillus thermarum DSM 7141T, Anoxybacillus mongoliensis DSM 19169T a

Phylogenomic reclassification of Cellulophaga species to Paracellulophaga gen. nov. and description of Allocellulophaga tsushimaensis gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel bacterium from coastal seawater of Tsushima Island, Japan.

A novel Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterial strain, designated as TSM-5 T, was isolated from surface seawater of a marine inlet. This strain grew well at 10-30 °C, pH 5.0-10.0 and in the presence of 0-4% (w/v) NaCl. Strain TSM-5 T was non-flagellated and positive for catalase and oxidase activities, and the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). The major fatty acids present in the strain were iso-C15:1 G, iso-C15:0, iso-C15:0 3-OH, iso-C17:0 3-OH, and summed feature 3 (comprising C16:1ω7c and/or C16:1ω6c). Aleya cavernae gen. nov., sp. nov., and Lacrimispora cavernae sp. nov., novel taxa isolated from bat guano.

Bats, of the order Chiroptera, comprise over 1,400 species and account for over 21% of all currently described mammalian species. However, despite this huge group of mammals, a remarkably small number of bacterial species have been described from this group. In a continuing study of non-human mammals, dozens of strains were isolated from anaerobic guano-pile enrichments collected in a bat cave near Protem, MO, USA. Of these, two novel taxa were identified and designated BS-2T and BS-20T; both were rod-shaped, Gram-stain-positive bacteria. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and phylogen

Clostridium Perfringens Toxins Involved in Mammalian Veterinary Diseases.

Clostridium perfringens is a gram-positive anaerobic rod that is classified into 5 toxinotypes (A, B, C, D, and E) according to the production of 4 major toxins, namely alpha (CPA), beta (CPB), epsilon (ETX) and iota (ITX). However, this microorganism can produce up to 16 toxins in various combinations, including lethal toxins such as perfringolysin O (PFO), enterotoxin (CPE), and beta2 toxin (CPB2). Most diseases caused by this microorganism are mediated by one or more of these toxins. The role of CPA in intestinal disease of mammals is controversial and poorly documented, but there is no dou

Whole-genome characterization of a colistin-resistant Klebsiella quasipneumoniae subsp. quasipneumoniae isolate from a urinary tract infection in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Klebsiella quasipneumoniae is a Gram-negative, non-motile, capsulated, facultative anaerobic rod within the K. pneumoniae species complex (KpSC) and is increasingly recognized as an opportunistic pathogen associated with bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and other clinically significant conditions. Because it shares many phenotypic characteristics with K. pneumoniae, accurate diagnosis remains challenging in routine clinical settings, particularly in low-resource laboratories lacking access to molecular identification tools. In this study, we characterized the antimicrob

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is a zoonotic occupational disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, a rod-shaped immobile aerobic gram-positive bacteria with spore. Anthrax occurs in humans randomly and with low frequency. Most cases of anthrax are acquired through contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products. This old disease became particularly important since 2001 that the biological spores were exploited in America. Depending on the transmission method of the disease, clinical manifestations occur in three classes: Cutaneous, respiratory, and gastrointestinal anthrax. The respiratory for
