Assessment of the Antimicrobial Activity of Algae Extracts on Bacteria Responsible of External Otitis.

External otitis is a diffuse inflammation around the external auditory canal and auricle, which is often occurred by microbial infection. This disease is generally treated using antibiotics, but the frequent occurrence of antibiotic resistance requires the development of new antibiotic agents. In this context, unexplored bioactive natural candidates could be a chance for the production of targeted drugs provided with antimicrobial activity. In this paper, microbial pathogens were isolated from patients with external otitis using ear swabs for over one year, and the antimicrobial activity of th

Kinetic studies and thermodynamics of oil extraction and transesterification of Chlorella sp. for biodiesel production.

In this work, a mixture of chloroform and methanol (1:1, v/v) was applied to oil extraction from Chlorella sp. at 30, 40, 50 and 60 degrees C for 150 min extraction times. Kinetic studies revealed that the values of n and the rate constants were found to depend strongly on temperature. The activation energy was Ea = 38.893 kJ/mol, and the activation thermodynamic parameters at 60 degrees C were ΔS≠ = -180.190 J/mol , ΔH≠ = 36.124k J/mol and ΔG≠ = 96.128k J/mol. Both ΔH and ΔS yielded positive values, whereas ΔG was negative at 60 degrees C, indicating that this process is endothermic, irrevers

Acclimation of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to different growth irradiances.

We report on the changes the photosynthetic apparatus of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii undergoes upon acclimation to different light intensity. When grown in high light, cells had a faster growth rate and higher biomass production compared with low and control light conditions. However, cells acclimated to low light intensity are indeed able to produce more biomass per photon available as compared with high light-acclimated cells, which dissipate as heat a large part of light absorbed, thus reducing their photosynthetic efficiency. This dissipative state is strictly dependent on the accumulation o

Sequential treatment of UV254 photodegradation and microalgal bioremediation in aquaculture effluent: Florfenicol toxicity mitigation and nutrient recovery.

Aquaculture effluent contains multiple pollutants, including the antibiotic florfenicol (FF) and nitrogen compounds, which pose challenges for simultaneous removal. This study investigated the effects of FF on Chlorella sorokiniana and evaluated UV254 irradiation as a pretreatment method for FF decomposition. C. sorokiniana exhibited strong tolerance to FF, with 54.9 % growth inhibition at 100 mg/L, but showed limited FF removal capacity. Furthermore, FF completely inhibited nitrate utilization by the C. sorokiniana. Molecular docking simulations, enzyme activity assays, and substrate removal

Sulfadiazine proliferated antibiotic resistance genes in the phycosphere of Chlorella pyrenoidosa: Insights from bacterial communities and microalgal metabolites.

The phycosphere is an essential ecological niche for the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, how ARGs' potential hosts change and the driving mechanism of metabolites under antibiotic stress in the phycosphere have seldom been researched. We investigated the response of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and the structure and abundance of free-living (FL) and particle-attached (PA) bacteria, ARGs, and metabolites under sulfadiazine by using real-time quantitative PCR, 16 S rRNA high-throughput. The linkage of key bacterial communities, ARGs, and metabolites through correlations wa

HABscope: A tool for use by citizen scientists to facilitate early warning of respiratory irritation caused by toxic blooms of Karenia brevis.

Blooms of the toxic microalga Karenia brevis occur seasonally in Florida, Texas and other portions of the Gulf of Mexico. Brevetoxins produced during Karenia blooms can cause neurotoxic shellfish poisoning in humans, massive fish kills, and the death of marine mammals and birds. Brevetoxin-containing aerosols are an additional problem, having a severe impact on beachgoers, triggering coughing, eye and throat irritation in healthy individuals, and more serious respiratory distress in those with asthma or other breathing disorders. The blooms and associated aerosol impacts are patchy in nature,

Dynamics of Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria in Water Environments: Risks via Surface Waters and Combating Strategies.

Water sustains all living systems, maintaining human, animal, and environmental health. However, as open systems, surface waters are highly exposed to microbial and chemical pollutants, including antimicrobials. These contaminants exert selective pressure on densely packed bacterial genomes and drive mutations leading to adaptation. This review explores the dynamics and key drivers underlying the emergence and persistence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in aquatic environments. It delineates both classical and novel horizontal gene transfer (HGT) mechanisms, ranging from conjugation, tr

A Comparative Review of Biological, Electrochemical, and Membrane-Based Methods for Direct Ocean Carbon Capture.

Direct ocean carbon capture (DOC) has emerged as a promising strategy for mitigating atmospheric CO2 levels and addressing ocean acidification. Unlike direct air carbon capture methods, DOC leverages the ocean's vast carbon storage capacity, offering a scalable and efficient route for carbon dioxide removal. This systematic comparative review categorizes existing DOC methods into three types: (1) biological carbon capture, which relies on photosynthesis by microalgae and marine microorganisms; (2) electrochemical carbon capture, which utilizes water electrolysis to generate H+ and OH- ions for

Characterization of Fatty Acid Photodecarboxylase in Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks.

Fatty acid photodecarboxylase (FAP) was recently discovered in microalgae and is a photoenzyme that harvests sunlight to convert long-chain fatty acids to hydrocarbons. The hydrophobicity of the substrates and photoproducts strongly affects the stability of FAP in vitro studies. Here, we incorporated zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) as structural protecting cages and characterized Chlorella variabilis FAP (cvFAP) in ZIFs. Due to the preparation conditions and the surface properties, ZIFs with a hydrophobic surface (ZIF-8) form a cluster-like packed morphology, and ZIFs with a hydrophilic s

Improvement of third generation bioethanol production from photoheterotrophically cultivated Chlorella vulgaris in the presence of carrot pomace and onion peel waste.

Microalgae are promising feedstocks, holding great potential for bioethanol production. However, microalgal bioethanol production requires the use of different approaches in order to optimize the process. In this study, the bioethanol production capacities of local yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida boidinii and Kluyveromyces marxianus) from Chlorella vulgaris biomass cultivated with 0.5 g/L carrot pomace sugar was investigated. Onion peel, a common waste product, was used for investigating its potential in improving yeast growth and bioethanol production by K. marxianus. Parameters suc

Understanding nonylphenol's aquatic fate: An integrated review of partitioning, natural attenuation, and contribution mechanism.

Nonylphenol (NP), an endocrine-disrupting chemical extensively used in industry, poses significant ecological risks due to its widespread presence in aquatic systems. NP's environmental occurrence and risk requires a comprehensive assessment of its fate, governed by interconnected natural processes (adsorption, photodegradation, mineralization, biodegradation, chemical oxidation, and sedimentation). These processes are driven to varying degrees by various abiotic factors (light, oxygen, organic matter, reactive oxygen species, metals) and microbial communities (bacteria, fungi, microalgae, and

Microbial Biofertilizers for Salinity Stress Mitigation in Hydroponic Systems.

Salinity accumulation is a critical abiotic constraint in hydroponic agriculture, particularly in recirculating systems, where limited leaching and nutrient cycling intensify ionic accumulation and increase the conductivity of nutrient solutions. Hydroponic crops are sensitive to osmotic and ionic stress, which leads to reduced water uptake, disrupted nutrient homeostasis, and yield loss. Traditional mitigation strategies, such as nutrient dilution, flushing, and water blending, provide temporary relief while increasing operational costs, nutrient discharge, and water consumption.
