PURPOSE: To describe the treatment results with adalimumab in chronic paediatric uveitis, not associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).
METHODS: Medical records of children with non-JIA-uveitis were reviewed retrospectively. Children without an underlying systemic disease were pre-screened with brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to exclude white matter abnormalities/demyelination.
RESULTS: Twenty-six patients were pre-screened with brain MRI, of whom adalimumab was contraindicated in six patients (23%) with non-anterior uveitis. Forty-three patients (81 eyes) were included. Di

PURPOSE: To report a series of patients with occlusive retinal vasculitis associated with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and elevated antiphospholipid antibody titers.
METHOD: Case series. Main outcome measures included clinical and fluorescein angiographic findings at presentation and over time.
OBSERVATIONS: Case 1 - A 61-year-old woman initially diagnosed with idiopathic, bilateral panuveitis and retinal vasculitis causing peripheral nonperfusion was subsequently diagnosed with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc). Her ocular inflammation and retinal vasculitis were controlled with topi

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of OCT in the diagnosis of uveitis secondary to syphilis.
DESIGN: Consecutive, retrospective case series.
PARTICIPANTS: All patients 18 years of age or older with ocular syphilis from 2 tertiary referral centers.
METHODS: All patients who were diagnosed with intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, or panuveitis secondary to syphilis were included in the study (40 patients representing a total of 62 eyes) to identify important imaging features to aid in diagnosis. Patients underwent confirmatory serologic testing, OCT imaging, and dilated examination by a uveit

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disorder of central nervous system (CNS) leading to neurological disability. A wide variety of ophthalmic and neuro-ophthalmic manifestations have been associated with MS. Although this link is well recognized, controversial is still the risk of developing MS in patients with ophthalmic manifestations. Intermediate uveitis followed by panuveitis are the most common manifestations among the ophthalmic involvement in MS. Timely management of uveitis, is a crucial step to prevent irreversible visual impairment. A multidisciplinary team including

AIMS: To estimate the incidence of childhood uveitis not associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in the United Kingdom.
METHODS: Children under 16 years who presented with a new diagnosis of uveitis from November 2014 to October 2015 were identified prospectively through the British and Scottish Ophthalmological Surveillance Unit reporting card system. Incident questionnaires were sent to reporting ophthalmologists at presentation and 12 months.
RESULTS: From 1st November 2014 to 31st October 2015, 119 cases were reported. Thirty-nine cases were excluded. The estimated minimum an

PURPOSE: Compared with fluorescein angiography (FA), the gold standard for diagnosing choroidal neovascularization (CNV) activity, optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is non-invasive without risks associated with fluorescein dye use, and may be especially advantageous in the diagnosis and monitoring of children with CNV.
METHODS: Eight eyes from eight patients aged 12 months to 18 years were imaged with the investigational Spectralis OCTA (version 6.9, Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) and the RTVue XR Avanti (Optovue Inc., Fremont, CA, USA). Two patients were imaged du

Nivolumab is an anti-programmed cell death protein 1 monoclonal antibody that is used to treat metastatic cutaneous malignant melanoma. Although bilateral uveitis has been reported as a side effect of nivolumab administration, there are few reports of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH)-like uveitis. We report such a case. A 63-year-old woman with metastatic cutaneous malignant melanoma experienced visual loss in both eyes 10 days after her second nivolumab injection. Her decimal best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.7 in the right eye and 0.4 in the left eye. Examination revealed bilateral

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-three eyes of 33 BD patients who had at least one anterior segment involvement and no active inflammation in the last 3 months were included in the study (group 1). Twenty-seven of the 33 BD patients had an anterior uveitis attack and six of them had a panuveitis (both anterior and posterior involvement) attack. PURPOSE: To examine whether measurement of serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is useful in diagnosing sarcoidosis in undifferentiated uveitis.
DESIGN: Evaluation of a diagnostic test.
METHODS: Data collection was performed from 1035 consecutive subjects presenting with uveitis to Moorfields Eye Hospital undergoing measurement of serum ACE as part of baseline investigations for underlying systemic disease. The main outcome measures were sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of elevated serum ACE.
RESULTS: Mean age of the sample

PURPOSE: To investigate the chemokine and adhesion molecule profiles in aqueous humor (AH) of eyes with inactive uveitis and their correlations with inflammation relapse after cataract surgery.
METHODS: Patients with inactive uveitis who underwent cataract surgery between July 2014 and January 2016 at our center were included. Undiluted AH samples (100-120 µl) were obtained through lateral corneal incisions during surgery, and concentrations of monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1/CCL2), macrophage inflammatory protein 1 (MIP-1), interleukin 8 (IL-8), regulated on activation, normal T ce

OBJECTIVES: Clinicians often face the challenge of providing effective and safe therapy for pregnant women with uveitis. Certolizumab pegol (CZP) differs from other anti-TNFα agents due to its limited placental transfer. In this study we assessed the efficacy of CZP in pregnant women with uveitis. We also provided information on outcomes of pregnant women and neonates exposed to CZP.
METHODS: We carried out a multicentre study of women with uveitis who received CZP during pregnancy and their neonates. The main visual outcomes were visual acuity (VA), intraocular inflammation and corticosteroi

OBJECTIVES: Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic multisystem inflammatory disorder associated to uveitis that may represent a serious sight-threatening condition. The purpose of the present study is to assess the effectiveness of adalimumab as new strategic therapeutic approach in patients affected by severe Behçet's uveitis.
METHODS: Clinical data from twelve selected patients (22 eyes) were retrospectively analysed. All patients received 40 mg of adalimumab subcutaneously, once every 2 weeks, in addition to traditional immunosuppressive on-going therapy and eight of them were switched to adal

PURPOSE: To report the anatomical pattern and etiological spectrum of uveitis in an urban multi-ethnic population from Barcelona, Spain. General and specific epidemiological data for the most prevalent aetiologies are also calculated.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of consecutive uveitis cases was performed between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2012. Exogenous endophthalmitis, surgery-related, post-traumatic and toxic uveitis along with masquerade syndromes were excluded. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 6 eyes (5 pseudophakic, 1 phakic) of 5 patients (mean age 60 years, range 46 - 70) were treated. Glaucoma was related to previous detachment surgery (patients 1), panuveitis (patient 2), iris dystrophy (patient 3), or neovascularization (patient 4: central venous occlusion; patient 5: proliferative diabetic retinopathy). Preoperatively, all patients had not responded to intensive glaucomato
