Assessment of ophthalmic artery collateral pathway in the hemispheric cerebral hemodynamics in patients with severe unilateral carotid stenosis.

The role of ophthalmic artery collateral pathway in hemispheric hemodynamics in patients with severe carotid stenosis is controversial. The aim of the present study was to address this question comparing the asymmetry of the velocity in middle and anterior cerebral arteries (MCAs and ACAs) and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) in MCA on stenotic side in the patients with unilateral severe stenosis of internal carotid artery (ICA) in patients with and without ophthalmic artery collateral pathway. The cohort of 118 patients with carotid stenosis was prospectively assembled. Fifty patients who had

MRI predicts area of increased plasminogen activation in permanent focal cerebral ischemia.

To determine if MRI can predict intracerebral plasminogen activation after focal cerebral ischemia (FCI), ischemic regions detected by MRI after 48 h of permanent FCI in rats were compared with areas of increased plasminogen activation, defined by histological zymography after 72 h of ischemia. The overlap between areas of MRI alterations (64.5% +/- 5.4% of total ischemic hemisphere) and areas with increased plasminogen activation (62.2% +/- 3.6%) was significant for the hemisphere (p < 0.001), the cortex (p < 0.05), and the basal ganglia (p < 0.05). Thus, MRI can predict the extent of increas

Histopathological and behavioral improvement of murine mucopolysaccharidosis type VII by intracerebral transplantation of neural stem cells.

The therapeutic efficacy of neural stem cell transplantation for central nervous system (CNS) lesions in lysosomal storage disorders was explored using a murine model of mucopolysaccharidosis type VII (MPS VII). We used fetal neural stem cells derived from embryonic mouse striata and expanded in vitro by neurosphere formation as the source of graft materials. We transplanted neurospheres into the lateral ventricles of newborn MPS VII mice and found that donor cells migrated far beyond the site of injection within 24 h, and some of them could reach the olfactory bulb. A quantitative measurement

Sequence analysis of an isolate from a fatal human infection of Australian bat lyssavirus.

Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV), which occurs in pteropid and insectivorous bat populations, causes a rabies-like encephalitis in infected humans. We report the first complete sequence of an ABLV isolate obtained from a human who developed symptoms 27 months after being bitten by an infected flying fox. This isolate is the smallest lyssavirus to be sequenced, with a size of 11,918 nucleotides. Analyses of previously unsequenced regions and the complete genome confirm its close relationship with classical rabies viruses. In addition, a leucine zipper-like motif, not present in the other lyssav

Comparative distribution of estrogen receptor-alpha and -beta mRNA in the rat central nervous system.

Estrogen plays a profound role in regulating the structure and function of many neuronal systems in the adult rat brain. The actions of estrogen were thought to be mediated by a single nuclear estrogen receptor (ER) until the recent cloning of a novel ER (ER-beta). To ascertain which ER is involved in the regulation of different brain regions, the present study compared the distribution of the classical (ER-alpha) and novel (ER-beta) forms of ER mRNA-expressing neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) of the rat with in situ hybridization histochemistry. Female rat brain, spinal cord, and e

Prosencephalic connections of striate and extrastriate areas of rat visual cortex.

Afferent connections of rat primary visual cortex (area 17 or V1 area) and the rostral and caudal parts of areas 18a and 18b were studied, by placing in each of the areas, small electrophoretic injections of enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or wheat germ agglutinated-HRP. The results indicate that: 1) each of the areas has a distinct pattern of distribution of afferent neurons in the ipsilateral visual thalamus - area 17 receives its principal thalamic input from the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, the caudal parts of areas 18a and 18b receive a major thalamic input from the lateral post

Transcriptome analysis of neural progenitor cells derived from Lowe syndrome induced pluripotent stem cells: identification of candidate genes for the neurodevelopmental and eye manifestations.

BACKGROUND: Lowe syndrome (LS) is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the X-linked gene OCRL, which codes for an inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase that plays a key role in endosome recycling, clathrin-coated pit formation, and actin polymerization. It is characterized by congenital cataracts, intellectual and developmental disability, and renal proximal tubular dysfunction. Patients are also at high risk for developing glaucoma and seizures. We recently developed induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines from three patients with LS who have hypomorphic variants affecting the 3' end of

Apoptosis in spotted sea bass brain and astroglia-like cell line implies a possible pathogenesis of Lateolabrax maculatus iridovirus infection.

Brain undergoing apoptosis often results in serious dysfunction, especially when subjected to viral infection. Our previous findings revealed that Lateolabrax maculatus iridovirus (LMIV), genetically closely related to Red Sea Bream Iridovirus (RSIV), was able to invade the brain tissue of L. maculatus. The analysis of consequent brain injury may bring us explanations for the pathogenesis of LMIV infection. In the present study, viral loads in different brain segments (telencephalon, optic tectum, cerebellum, hypothalamus, medulla oblongata, optic nerve) of L. maculatus were measured by qPCR.

Subclinical effects of saxitoxin and domoic acid on aggressive behaviour and monoaminergic turnover in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

The algal produced neurotoxins saxitoxin and domoic acid may have serious effects on marine life and can be responsible for the intoxication of for instance sea mammals, sea birds and fish. Given that farmed fish cannot escape algal blooms, they may be more susceptible to intoxication than wild stocks. In the present study, subclinical effects of saxitoxin and domoic on aggressive behaviour and monoaminergic systems in the brain of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. The resident-intruder test was used to measure aggression where only the resident fish were subjected to

Expression and regulation of brain metallothionein.

Many, but not all, zinc-containing neurons in the brain are a subclass of the glutamatergic neurons, and they are found predominantly in the telencephalon. These neurons store zinc in their presynaptic terminals and release it by a calcium-dependent mechanism. These "vesicular" pools of zinc are viewed as endogenous modulators of ligand- and voltage-gated ion channels. Metallothioneins (MTs) are low molecular weight zinc-binding proteins consisting of 25-30% cysteine, with no aromatic amino acids or disulfide bonds. The areas of the brain containing high contents of zinc such as the retina, th

The contribution of both forebrain and midbrain crest cells to the mesenchyme in the frontonasal mass of mouse embryos.

Migration of cranial neural crest cells is a crucial event in the formation of facial organs such as the frontonasal mass and branchial arches. However, the source of the populating crest cells that occupy the frontonasal mass remains unclear in mammalian embryos. To elucidate this, we performed focal DiI injections at various sites in the prosencephalon (forebrain, including the future telencephalon and diencephalon), mesencephalon (midbrain), and the anterior part of the rhombencephalon (hindbrain) separated posteriorly by the preotic sulus (i.e., rhombomere A; future rhombomere 1 and 2) of

Epidermoid tumour of the lateral ventricle.

Epidermoids occurring within the lateral ventricles are rare. At one time, they were regarded as anatomical curiosities. The lesions are of developmental aetiology, due to migration of epiblast inclusion at the time of formation of the cerebral vesicle. They are slow growing, and presentation is non-specific in the form of deteriorating mental functions. Generally seen in the fifth decade, but they have also been observed in the paediatric age group. MRI is suggestive of a cystic lesion, and is confirmed to be a typical epidermoid within the lateral ventricle at operation, often having a conne

Localization of transcripts of the related nuclear orphan receptors COUP-TF I and ARP-1 in the adult mouse brain.

The chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter transcription factor, COUP-TF I, and the protein ARP-1 (COUP-TF II) are two highly homologous orphan receptors of the nuclear hormone receptor family. In this study we investigated their expression patterns in the adult nervous system of the mouse. In situ hybridizations were performed on brain sections with 35S-labeled cRNA probes derived from the 3'-non-coding regions of the mARP-1 and mCOUP-TF I mRNAs. Both COUP-TF I and ARP-1 were shown to be expressed in the adult brain and they displayed restricted and distinct expression patterns. COUP-TF I transc
