Prevalence of chlamydia, toxoplasma, toxocara and ringworm in farm cats in south-west England.

The prevalence of infection with Chlamydia psittaci, Toxoplasma gondii, Toxocara cati and Microsporum canis was examined in 51 cats on 22 sheep farms in the Bristol area. Serum antibody to C psittaci and T gondii was present in 45 per cent and 47 per cent of cats, respectively. At the time of sampling C psittaci was isolated from 6 per cent of the cats, T cati was identified in 63 per cent of faecal samples but neither T gondii nor M canis was isolated. When examined according to the farm of origin, 22.7 per cent of farms had cat populations with no evidence of infection with C psittaci or T g

Interrelationship of eosinophilia and IgE antibody production to larval ES antigen in Toxocara canis infected mice.

In order to elucidate the relationship between eosinophilia and IgE antibody production in parasitic infection, the degree of eosinophilia and IgE antibody levels to larval ES antigen of Toxocara canis were investigated in eight inbred strains of mice after infection with T. canis. Eosinophilia was far higher in degree in SJL mice than in the other inbred strains. However, IgE antibody levels to larval ES antigen in SJL mice were the lowest among those inbred strains. Similarly, the degree of eosinophilia in AKR mice was slightly higher than those in the other strains except SJL mice, but IgE

Toxocara Canis Increases the Potential of Breast Cancer by Reducing the Expression of the P53 Protein.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is considered the most frequent type of cancer in women with high mortality worldwide, and most importantly, it is the second most common cancer. However, some breast cancer-related risk factors remain unknown. So, the current study was designed to evaluate the effect of Toxocara canis on the biomarkers correlated with proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation, and angiogenesis in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice infected with Toxocara canis for the first time. METHODS: Mice were categorized into four groups: A) control, B) treated with 4T1+ Toxocara canis, C) treated with Toxo

Enhanced expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 in inflammatory cells, alpha-smooth muscle actin in stellate cells, and collagen accumulation in experimental granulomatous hepatitis caused by Toxocara canis in mice.

Although toxocaral granulomatous hepatitis (TGH) characterized with a dominant-Th2 type immune response is a self-limiting disease, little is known concerning the role of fibrosis-related cytokine transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) in pathogenesis of TGH. A detailed histological and quantitatively immunohistochemical analysis of TGF-beta 1, alpha-smooth muscle actins (alpha-SMA), and collagen was performed on the liver tissues from mice infected with Toxocara canis as assessed between day 1 and 42 weeks post-infection (DPI or WPI). TGF-beta1 was detected mainly in infiltrating leuk

Anthropozoonotic helminthiases in Australasia: Part 3: - studies on the prevalence and public health implications of helminth parasites of dogs and cats in urban environments.

Man has acquired helminth infections at different times during his evolutionary history and animals have and do serve an important role in supplementing these acquisitions. Helminth species are divided into those which accompanied man as he emerger as a species and those which he has since acquired from domestic, wild and domiciliated animals by breakdown of ecological, physiological and immunological barriers (Sprent 1969). With particular reference to helminth zoonoses transmitted through domesticated animals, the role played by dogs and cats in disease transmission to man (in urban environm

Seroepidemiology of human Toxocara and Ascaris infections in the Netherlands.

Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati and Ascaris suum are worldwide-distributed zoonotic roundworms of dogs, cats and pigs, respectively. The epidemiology of these parasites in developed countries is largely unclear. Two countrywide cross-sectional serosurveys were therefore conducted in the Netherlands in 1995/1996 and 2006/2007 to investigate the prevalence, trends and risk factors for human Toxocara and Ascaris infections in the general population. The Netherlands is characterized by high pig production, freedom from stray dogs and virtual absence of autochthonous infections with the human-adapted

Seropositivity for ascariosis and toxocariosis and cytokine expression among the indigenous people in the Venezuelan Delta region.

The present study aimed at measuring seropositivities for infection by Ascaris suum and Toxocara canis using the excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens from Ascaris suum (AES) and Toxocara canis (TES) within an indigenous population. In addition, quantification of cytokine expressions in peripheral blood cells was determined. A total of 50 Warao indigenous were included; of which 43 were adults and seven children. In adults, 44.1% were seropositive for both parasites; whereas children had only seropositivity to one or the other helminth. For ascariosis, the percentage of AES seropositivity in adul

Enteropathogens in pups from pet shops and breeding facilities.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate faecal and clinical scores and presence of several enteropathogens possibly implicated in the development of diarrhoea in pups aged between 6 and 16 weeks independently of their health status. METHODS: Pups were selected from pet shops and breeding facilities and assigned a faecal and clinical score. Standard isolation methods were used to determine presence of parasites, viruses and bacteria in faecal samples. For Escherichia coli, virulence genes were assessed by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Fifty-six pups were included in this study. Eighteen had n

Endoparasites of the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Finland.

We sampled 339 fecal samples, 296 intestines, and 82 lungs from 371 lynx hunted during the 2010-2011 season in Finland. The fecal samples were analyzed for endoparasites by a quantitative flotation method, and helminths from intestines were studied morphologically, while lungs were investigated for pulmonary parasites. From fecal samples, eggs and oocysts of at least 6 different endoparasite species were identified, with a mean of 1.5 (range 0-4) parasite species per host. In the intestines, at least 4 different helminth species were found, with the mean of 2.0 (range 1-4) species per infected
