BACKGROUND: The articular tubercle is a site prone to pneumatization within the cranial bones. Knowledge of the anatomical variations of pneumatization adjacent to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an important issue. Air cells exhibit decreased resistance to trauma, facilitate the spread of various pathologies in the TMJ, such as inflammation, tumours or fractures. Articular tubercle pneumatization may cause complications during TMJ surgery. Information of possible location allows to detect and conduct differential diagnosis of pneumatization of the articular tubercle (PAT) during cone-bea

BACKGROUND: Abducens nerve (Cranial Nerve VI) innervates the lateral rectus (LR) muscle. Head trauma is one of the most common causes of abducens nerve palsy. Orbital and/or facial injuries could also affect the LR muscle directly or the orbital course of abducens nerve and lead to palsy. We present a case of a young man with multiple orbital fractures and an impingement of the LR muscle resulting in a complete loss of abduction.
CASE REPORT: A 29-year-old male reported falling 15 feet. He presented with diplopia and had complete abduction deficit of the left eye. Orbital CT imaging revealed

AIM: To study the anatomy of zygomatico-orbital, zygomatico-facial and zygomatico temporal foramina in south Indian population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 50 dry adult skulls of south Indian origin were studied. The number of ZO, ZF and ZT were recorded on each side. The distances of these foramina to the nearest palpable bony points, infero-lateral angle of the orbit and infra-orbital foramen were measured using Vernier's calipers.
RESULTS: Variable number of ZO and ZF foramina, ranging from 0 to 4 was seen. Single ZO foramen in 56% and 44%, double in 6% and 12%, absent in 38% and 44% on right

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pediatric temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis can lead to significant difficulties in opening the mouth, as well as stunted mandibular growth resulting in a small mandible and facial asymmetry. For pediatric TMJ ankylosis, the ideal time to perform TMJ mobilization in order to achieve standard mandibular growth is unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old boy with limited mouth opening was referred to our hospital. The patient had previously sustained a fracture of the left articular process of the mandible. Clinical examination revealed bony ankylosis of the

BACKGROUND: Trigeminocardiac reflex is a physiological phenomenon that may occur in head and neck surgery, and is usually benign. However, it may present with exaggerated responses with severe morbidity.
CASE REPORT: Male patient, 26 years old, candidate for surgical treatment of zygomatic-orbital complex fracture. The surgery with bilateral nasal packing placed at the end of the procedure was uneventful. After being admitted to the post-anesthesia care unity, the patient complained of shortness of breath and nausea. Pulse oximetry fell below 90% in ambient air, and 100% O2 was then offered t

PURPOSE: Computer-assisted surgery is used for decision making, treatment, and quality control throughout the reconstruction process of unilateral midface defects. The current approaches exploit the symmetry of the face by mirroring the intact side on the defect side using various segmentation methods. All commercially available implementations, however, are somewhat time consuming and dependent on the level of expertise of the user. We present a method for automatic reconstruction of unilateral midface defects using registration.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: To reconstruct a skull by registration,

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Transverse maxillary deficiency is one of the most detrimental problems to midfacial growth and the integrated dentoalveolar structures. Early diagnosis and proper treatment of such cases is most important to maintain the balance between the basal bones and stable occlusion.
CASE PRESENTATION: In our case, a 17-year-old male had irregular upper front teeth with an unpleasant smile. Detail examination revealed a symmetrical face with an orthognathic profile, mild malar deficiency, competent lips, asymmetrical arches, Class I molar and canine relationships bilateral

A variety of materials have been used to reconstruct defects of the orbital floor. Autogenous materials such as bone and cartilage have the obvious drawback of the necessary donor site, whereas alloplastic implants carry the potential risk of infection, particularly when in communication with the maxillary sinus. Consequently, there has been interest in the use of resorbable alloplastic material that acts as a barrier until completely degraded. In this series, a total of 12 patients with orbital defects larger than 1 cm2 were treated by the placement of a resorbable mesh plate of polyglycolic

Sensory disturbance following orbitozygomatic complex fractures was studied in 65 patients in relation to type of fracture and method of treatment. The fracture-type-dependent treatments were: no surgical intervention (n = 20), closed reduction with or without wire fixation (n = 17), open reduction with miniplate fixation (n = 15) and/or reconstruction of the orbital floor (n = 13). Several methods were applied to assess sensory function, on average 6.3 months after treatment, i.e. the patient's report and tests regarding touch, two methods of two-point discrimination, and cold, all applied on

Injuries to the nose and perinasal region are common. Although the nasal fractures are commonly recognized and properly addressed, injuries to adjacent structures such as the orbit, medial canthus, and midface skeleton can be missed or misdiagnosed, leading to improper primary treatment and subsequent secondary deformities. In this discussion, three common injuries will be discussed, including nasomaxillary fractures, limited naso-orbital-ethmoid fractures, and severe central facial injuries with naso-orbital-ethmoid fractures. For instructional purposes, a case example of inadequate primary d
