The significance of the hormone calcitonin, ectopically produced, is evaluated as a tumour marker. Since 40 percent of an unselected sample of tumours is hypercalcitoninaemic, calcitonin may be useful as a tumour marker, though absence of specificity limits its diagnostic value.

As part of a project to identify the endocrine cells ("EC" and "APUD" series) of the gastroenteric apparatus of ruminants, the ultrastructure of the mucosa of the pyloric glands of adult ox was studied morphologically and cytochemically, in parallel with a light microscope histochemical analysis. The results show that: the "EC" cells (producing 5-HT) are recognizable by their secretory granules which are heavily osmiophilic, argentaffin ("Masson") and argyrophilic ("Grimelius"). Neuroendocrine carcinoma is a type of neuroendocrine system neoplasm that occurs in organisms in which amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation (APUD) cells are uncommon. The morphofunctional state of apudocytes in the gastrointestinal tract and immunocompetent organs (spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes) of mice immunized with chemical bivalent cholera vaccine was studied. Mucous membrane from different parts of the stomach has been studied in 53 surgical cases of stomach carcinoma. All the tumours were subdivided into endocrine-cell (EC) and non-endocrine-cell. Twenty-six of 100 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma contained argyrophil cells. All these tumours were carcino-embryonic antigen positive and 13 contained variable amounts of gastro-enteropancreatic peptides and amines. Rectosigmoid- or colonoscopy biopsies were performed at different levels of the large intestine of 16 adult subjects free from major intestinal disease. Foregut endocrine polypeptide-secreting APUD cells (Amine-Precursor-Uptake and Decarboxylation), in their embryologic migration from neural crest to foregut may become "arrested" in the mesoderm or in other ectopic locations. They may become hyperplastic, adenomatous or malignant. Eight illustrative patients are reported. One patient had "pancreatic hyperparathyroidism" with hypercalcemic crises, pancreatic apudocarcinoma, normal parathyroids, biologically active parathormone, but inert immunochemically to the usual parathyroid antisera. To ascertain whether the content of endocrine markers is constant in small-cell carcinoma of the lung, levels of three markers of medullary thyroid carcinoma were studied in this tumor.
