[Acquired disorders of peritoneal cavity muscles. Abdominal wall denervation in pregnancy, denervation incontinence, and continent and incontinent constipation].

The peritoneal cavity has a fascial skeleton that is kept under tension by permanent variable resting tone maintained by the abdominal muscles. The lateral abdominal muscles, the diaphragm and the pelvic floor are all components of this fasciomuscular support system. Voluntary and reflective changes in muscle tension allow the entry and exit of matter into and out of the spherical abdominal cavity by opening and closing of specialized wall segments called sphincters. We have previously demonstrated the existence of a resting tone in the tail muscles of mammals from which the human pelvic floor

Effects of Abdominal Bracing Versus Abdominal Hollowing on Abdominal Muscle Thickness and Activation During Static and Dynamic Trunk Stabilization Tasks in Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND Abdominal hollowing selectively targets deep abdominal muscles, whereas abdominal bracing emphasizes global activation of the superficial musculature. This study aimed to compare the effects of abdominal bracing and abdominal hollowing on abdominal muscle thickness and activation during trunk stabilization tasks in healthy adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighteen healthy adults (9 males, 9 females) participated in a randomized crossover study. Abdominal bracing and hollowing were performed in random order with a 1-week wash-out period. Muscle thickness of the rectus abdominis (RA), ext

Abdominal Muscle Wall Abscess as a Rare Extra-abdominal Complication of Acute Diverticulitis: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Diverticulitis may lead to intra-abdominal abscesses; however, extra-abdominal complications such as abdominal muscle wall abscesses are exceedingly rare. These abscesses can present weeks after conservative treatment, often with nonspecific symptoms that delay diagnosis. Understanding rare extension pathways of diverticular inflammation is essential for early recognition and management. We report a case of a 48-year-old male with grade III obesity who presented with a painful abdominal mass one month after an episode of sigmoid diverticulitis. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a

Tumor-Induced Oblique Abdominal Muscle Paralysis Syndrome: A Case of Position-Dependent Abdominal Distension and Umbilical Displacement.

Unilateral paralysis of the oblique abdominal muscles is commonly linked to non-malignant conditions, such as herniated discs, shingles, and phrenic nerve injury, each leading to localized muscle weakness through nerve impairment. However, oblique abdominal muscle paralysis caused by malignant tumors is exceedingly rare. This report presents a unique case of left oblique abdominal muscle paralysis induced by malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), demonstrating a distinct pattern of position-dependent abdominal bulging and umbilical displacement. The patient, a male in his 70s, was initially tre

The difficult abdominal closure after paediatric intestinal transplantation: Use of abdominal rectus muscle fascia and literature review.

Primary abdominal wall closure after intestinal and multivisceral transplantation may not be possible because of loss of abdominal domain and/or graft size/abdominal cavity mismatch. Traditional closure techniques for the open abdomen may not be valid in these circumstances because of severe scarring of the abdominal wall from multiple previous surgeries in this particular group of patients. We present our initial experience with the use of non-vascularized abdominal rectus muscle fascia in two patients who underwent deceased donation and living-related combined liver and small bowel transplan

Traumatic abdominal wall hernia as a component of the seatbelt syndrome: A case report of complete abdominal wall muscle transection.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Seat belt syndrome (SBS) is a rare condition described as injuries sustained due to thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic compression in the context of traffic accidents. These injuries can range from minor skin abrasions to large lesions of internal organs and spinal cord involvement. Traumatic abdominal wall hernias (TAWH) are one of the injuries that can be associated. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old male suffered a severe injury, resulting in complete transection of all abdominal wall musculature due to SBS, with associated visceral injury. Emergency surgery includ

The effect of electromyography triggered electrical stimulation to abdominal muscles on sitting balance, respiratory functions, and abdominal muscle thickness in complete spinal cord injury: a randomized controlled trial.

Complete thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) results in a loss of innervation to the abdominal muscles, which affects trunk stability and performance of activities of daily living from a sitting position. Respiratory function is also affected, leading to frequent pulmonary complications. Given the importance of trunk stability and respiratory function, we investigated the effects of electromyography triggered electrical stimulation (EMG-ES) applied to the abdominal muscles on sitting balance, respiratory functions and abdominal muscle thickness in individuals with complete thoracic SCI. This ran

The Pathophysiological Role of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is the most common aortic disease occurring below the renal arteries, caused by multiple etiologies. Currently, no effective drug treatment exists, and the specific pathogenesis remains unclear. Due to its insidious onset and diagnostic challenges, AAA often culminates in aortic rupture, which has a high mortality rate. During AAA development, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) undergo significant pathological alterations, including contractile dysfunction, phenotypic modulation, cellular degradation, and heightened inflammatory and oxidative stress responses.

Protective Role for Smooth Muscle Cell Hepcidin in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Hepcidin is a liver-derived hormone that controls systemic iron homeostasis, by inhibiting the iron exporter ferroportin in the gut and spleen, respective sites of iron absorption and recycling. Hepcidin is also expressed ectopically in the context of cardiovascular disease. However, the precise role of ectopic hepcidin in underlying pathophysiology is unknown. In patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), hepcidin is markedly induced in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) of the aneurysm wall and inversely correlated with the expression of LCN2 (lipocalin-2), a protein implicated in AA

Higher Abdominal Adiposity Is Associated With Lower Muscle Strength in Chilean Adults.

Handgrip strength (HGS) is a well-established indicator of muscle strength and a reasonable clinical predictor of metabolic health and diseases. This study explores the association between relative muscular strength and abdominal obesity (AO) in healthy Chilean adults. A convenience sample was recruited (n = 976) between 2018 and 2020. The HGS was determined by dynamometry. The anthropometry (weight, height, waist, and mid-arm circumference) and physical activity were also measured. The relative HGS (RHGS) was calculated by dividing the maximum HGS of the dominant hand by the body mass index.

Motor protein function in skeletal abdominal muscle of cachectic cancer patients.

Cachexia presents with ongoing muscle wasting, altering quality of life in cancer patients. Cachexia is a limiting prognostic factor for patient survival and health care costs. Although animal models and human trials have shown mechanisms of motorprotein proteolysis, not much is known about intrinsic changes of muscle functionality in cancer patients suffering from muscle cachexia, and deeper insights into cachexia pathology in humans are needed. To address this question, rectus abdominis muscle samples were collected from several surgical control, non-cachectic and cachectic cancer patients a

Nasal air puff stimulations and laryngeal, thoracic and abdominal muscle activities.

In cats, we studied the activity of laryngeal, thoracic and abdominal muscles and the variations in oesophageal pressure in response to air puff stimulations of the nasal mucosa. Following single stimulations, inspiratory and laryngeal dilator muscles were transiently inhibited. During inspiratory inhibition, expiratory muscles and laryngeal constrictor were transiently activated. Repetitive air puff stimulations, which induced sneeze, evoked a similar pattern of transient activities during the inspiratory preparation of sneeze. This resulted in transient fluctuations of the oesophageal pressu

Role of vagal afferents in the control of abdominal expiratory muscle activity in the dog.

We examined the contribution of afferent vagal A- and C-fibers on abdominal expiratory muscle activity (EMA). In seven spontaneously breathing supine dogs anesthetized with alpha-chloralose we recorded the electromyogram of the external oblique muscle at various vagal temperatures before and after the induction of a pneumothorax. When myelinated fibers were blocked selectively by cooling the vagus nerves to 7 degrees C, EMA decreased to 40% of control (EMA at 39 degrees C). With further cooling to 0 degrees C, removing afferent vagal C-fiber activity, EMA returned to 72% of control. On rewarmi

Intercostal and abdominal muscle afferent influence on pneumotaxic center respiratory neurons.

The experiments were performed on mid-collicular decerebrated, vagotomized, paralyzed, artificially ventilated cats. Phrenic (PA) and pneumotaxic center (PC) respiratory neuron (extracellular) activities were recorded during electrical stimulation of intercostal nerve proprioceptor afferents (external, internal or lateral intercostal nerves). Intercostal nerve stimulation (INS) of sufficient intensity to reduce PA also reduced the activity of phasic PC I-neurons and the I-modulated portion of tonic firing I-neurons. The stimulus-response latency for the reduction in PA was always shorter than
