Nailfold Capillaroscopic Findings in an Orthopedic Surgeon: Reversible Abnormalities after the Cessation of Radiation Exposure.

Interventional fluoroscopy is a leading source of occupational ionizing radiation exposure for medical personnel. For example, orthopedic surgeons represent one occupation where the risk of exposure is large. This occupational hazard is the result of a cumulative dose of radiation over time. Adverse health effects induced by low-dose radiation exposure can arise from daily procedures performed over an entire career. Many of the radiation-induced effects that may develop are transient erythema, permanent epilation, dry desquamation, dermal necrosis and telangiectasia; these effects have occurre

Sex ratio at birth: scenario from normal- and high-level natural radiation areas of Kerala coast in south-west India.

Newborns were monitored for congenital malformations in four government hospitals located in high-level (ambient dose >1.5 mGy/year) and normal-level (≤ 1.5 mGy/year) natural radiation areas of Kerala, India, from August 1995 to December 2012. Sex ratio at birth (SRB) among live singleton newborns and among previous children, if any, of their mothers without history of any abortion, stillbirth or twins is reported here. In the absence of environmental stress or selective abortion of females, global average of SRB is about 1050 males to 1000 females. A total of 151,478 singleton, 1031 twins, 12

Imaging the pregnant patient for nonobstetric conditions: algorithms and radiation dose considerations.

Use of diagnostic imaging studies for evaluation of pregnant patients with medical conditions not related to pregnancy poses a persistent and recurring dilemma. Although a theoretical risk of carcinogenesis exists, there are no known risks for development of congenital malformations or mental retardation in a fetus exposed to ionizing radiation at the levels typically used for diagnostic imaging. An understanding of the effects of ionizing radiation on the fetus at different gestational stages and the estimated exposure dose received by the fetus from various imaging modalities facilitates app

Health effects resulting from the Chernobyl accident.

This article reviews the health effects of the Chernobyl accident. The clearest effect to be seen to date is the dramatic increase in thyroid cancer in children. The evidence for increased leukaemia is less clear, but there are indications of increased leukaemia incidence in Russian clean-up workers. There is also evidence of increases in breast cancer, cataract and cardiovascular disease. However, to date the largest public health problem caused by the accident is the mental health impact.

The Pathogenesis and Prevention Strategies of Radiation-Induced Brain Injury.

Radiation-induced brain injury (RBI) encompasses the severe symptoms resulting from radiation-induced damage to the normal tissue surrounding tumors in patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck malignancies. The primary symptoms include skin erythema, pain, and may extend to headache, syncope, nausea, vomiting, memory impairment, alterations in mental status, visual disturbances, drowsiness, and other neurological abnormalities localized to the area of treatment. These side effects both limit the effectiveness of radiation therapy and reduce the patient's quality of life. During radio

Radiation-induced valvular disease is the logical consequence of irradiation.

Mediastinal irradiation has been reported to induce cardiac diseases such as pericardial disease, accelerated arteriosclerosis of the coronary arteries, valvular disease, conduction abnormalities, and calcification of the aorta. We experienced four cases of radiation-induced valvular disease. All patients had histories of radiation therapy and had aortic valve disease. All patients had marked fibrosis of the mediastinum and hypertrophy of pericardium. The aortic valve leaflets were tricuspid and fibrotic with focal dystrophic calcification and markedly thickened. In the pathological findings,

[Teratogenic effects of incorporated radionuclides].

Experimental data on teratogenic effects induced by incorporated alpha, beta and gamma-emitters were analyzed. It was found that the radioactive substances as well as external irradiation induced teratogenic effects. Teratogenesis caused by incorporated radionuclides has some peculiarities compared to the effect caused by fetus exposure to external radiation. These peculiarities are related to the fact of the limited penetration of incorporated radionuclides via placenta barrier so the radiation fetal doses are accumulated within long period of time and radiation dose rates are relatively low.

NF-κB signaling modulates radiation‑induced microglial activation.

Microglial activation has been suggested to be associated with the incidence of radiation-induced brain injury. The present study investigated the molecular mechanism(s) involved in radiation-induced activation of the microglia. Mouse microglial BV-2 cells were exposed to different doses of radiation. The release of inflammatory factors was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Protein expression was determined by immunocytochemistry and immunoblotting. Microglial activation was induced by radiation [>16 Gray (Gy)]. Activa

Exposure to ionizing radiation during pregnancy: perception of teratogenic risk and outcome.

We quantified the perception of teratogenic risk in women attending the Motherisk program for counseling about diagnostic radiation in pregnancy (n = 50) and compared it with a control group of women exposed to nonteratogenic drugs and chemicals (n = 48). Before receiving known information about the specific exposure, women exposed to radiation assigned themselves a significantly higher teratogenic risk compared with the control group (25.5 +/- 4.3% versus 15.7 +/- 3.0% for major malformations, P less than 0.01). The post-consultation perception of teratogenic risk did not differ between the t

Uterine radiation dose from open sources: the potential for underestimation.

The evaluation of the risk of radiation damage to the unborn child as the result of the administration of radionuclides remains a subject for discussion (Mountford 1989). Lack of information concerning the biodistribution of radiopharmaceuticals in the early stages of pregnancy, before organogenesis has occurred, has greatly restricted the objective assessment of fetal doses. Recent observations on the biodistribution of a therapeutic dose of sodium iodide 131 in a patient with an unsuspected early pregnancy lead us to suspect that current dose estimates with respect to uterine exposure (ARSAC

Prenatal death and malformations after irradiation of mouse zygotes with neutrons or X-rays.

Female mice (strain: "Heiligenberger Stamm") were irradiated with neutrons (7 MeV) or X-rays when embryos were at the early zygote stage; uterine contents were examined on gestation day 19 for prenatal mortality and malformed fetuses. For both radiation qualities, the dose-dependent survival curve fitted well to a simple exponential equation; the neutron relative biological efficiency (RBE) value was 2.3. The major fraction of deaths induced by exposure to neutrons or X-rays occurred before implantation. Aside from dead embryos, malformed fetuses were observed 19 days p.c. (postconception). Th

Residence near power lines and the risk of birth defects.

BACKGROUND: There has been some concern that exposure to electromagnetic fields may cause birth defects. We studied risks of birth defects by residential exposure to 50-Hz magnetic fields from power lines. METHODS: We estimated the distance between residence and power lines for 161,844 Norwegian residences, and their corresponding magnetic fields in the period 1980 to 1997. Risks of 24 categories of birth defects were compared across exposure levels, adjusting for social and demographic variables. RESULTS: Among those living near power lines, the greatest reductions in risk were for cardiac

Individual variations in the correlation between erythemal threshold, UV-induced DNA damage and sun-burn cell formation.

A linear correlation between erythema intensity and DNA damage upon exposure to UV has not been firmly established. Many of the deleterious effects of UV exposure do occur after exposure to suberythemal doses. After DNA damage, cells undergo DNA repair. It is commonly accepted that when the burden of damage is beyond the repair capacities, the cell undergoes programmed cell death or apoptosis. The aim of this study is to quantify the amount of UV-induced DNA damage (estimated via the measurement of DNA repair or unscheduled DNA synthesis or UDS) and cellular damage (estimated via the determina

De novo development of a cavernous malformation of the spinal cord following spinal axis radiation. Case report.

Analysis of recent reports has suggested that cavernous malformations (CMs) of the brain may have an acquired pathogenesis and a dynamic pathophysiological composition, with documented appearance of new lesions in familial cases and following radiotherapy. The authors report the first case of demonstrated de novo formation of an intramedullary CM following spinal radiation therapy. A 17 year-old boy presented with diabetes insipidus and delayed puberty. Evaluation of endocrine levels revealed hypopituitarism, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated an infundibular mass. The patient un

Prenatal radiation exposure: background material for counseling pregnant patients following exposure to radiation.

Fetal sensitivity to radiation-induced health effects is related to gestational age, and it is highly dependent on fetal dose. Typical fetal doses from diagnostic radiology are usually below any level of concern. Although rare, significant fetal radiation doses can result from interventional medical exposures (fluoroscopically guided techniques), radiation therapy, or radiological or nuclear incidents, including terrorism. The potential health effects from these large radiation doses (possibly large enough to result in acute radiation syndrome in the expectant mother) include growth retardatio
