[Resorbable rods and screws of polyglycolide in stabilizing malleolar fractures. A clinical study of 600 patients].

Absorbable internal fracture fixation implants have been in large-scale clinical use since 1984. The main advantage of these devices is that no subsequent operation for implant removal is required. In this study the results obtained in a series of 600 patients with displaced malleolar fractures who were operated on over a 6-year period (1985-1990) using rods or screws made of polyglycolide were analysed. Rod fixation was used in 63% and screw fixation in 37% of the patients. Recovery was uneventful in 91.5%. Bacterial wound infection occurred in 1.2% and failure of fixation necessitating reope

Ultrastructural Analysis of Infected Absorbable Bone Fixation Material Using Scanning Electron Microscopy After Zygomatic Bone Fracture Surgery.

Absorbable bone fixation materials are commonly used in facial bone fracture surgery. However, reports on the microstructure of infected implants are rare. This study presents a case involving a 74-year-old male patient who developed an α-Streptococcus infection 2.5 months after zygomatic bone fracture surgery and the ultrastructure of an infected absorbable plate observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The patient sustained a right zygomatic bone fracture due to a fall and underwent open reduction and internal fixation with SonicWeld on the seventh day after the injury. The posto

Retrospective study of open reduction and internal fixation of lateral humeral condyle fractures with absorbable screws and absorbable sutures in children.

BACKGROUND: Lateral humeral condyle fractures are the second most common elbow fracture in children. Displaced and rotated fractures require stabilization and reduction. Kirschner wires (K-wires) are most commonly used in the fixation of these fractures. Here, we introduce a new fixation method that uses an absorbable screw. We aim to determine if it is feasible to treat lateral humeral condyle fractures with an absorbable screw by comparing functional outcomes following absorbable screw fixation vs. K-wire fixation. METHODS: Between May 2007 and September 2010, 86 patients were treated with

Avoiding pitfalls in craniofacial reconstruction using absorbable plates.

Rigid internal fixation devices are a mainstay in craniofacial surgery. The advent of absorbable plates has been a monumental advancement and has proven to be a safe and effective method of osteofixation. It has been proposed that many problems of the permanent metallic implants can be avoided by the use of resorbable plates. Exposure is thought to be secondary to tissue tension over the plates and breakdown of the overlying tissue envelope. This a report of 2 cases of craniosynostosis reconstruction with absorbable plate exposure through overlying skin incisions necessitating plate removal an

Absorbable fixation of femoral head fractures. A prospective study of six cases.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fracture of the femoral head associated with a traumatic dislocation of the hip is a rare but severe injury. The methods of the recommended treatment have varied from primary closed or open reduction without fixation to excision of fragments or internal fixation. In our department we have treated other kinds of intra-articular fractures successfully with totally absorbable polyglycolide and poly-L-lactide implants. The aim of this study was to investigate the value of totally absorbable rods and screws in the fixation of the femoral head fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: S

Arthroscopic Reduction and Fixation of Impacted Humeral Head Reverse Hill-Sachs Fracture With Absorbable Anchors for Acute Traumatic Posterior Shoulder Dislocation.

A minimally invasive technique is presented for the treatment of acute traumatic posterior shoulder dislocation with a reverse Hill-Sachs lesion. Arthroscopic reduction was combined with internal fixation using 1 absorbable anchor. Under high-definition arthroscopic visualization, precise anatomical reduction of the impacted anteromedial humeral head compression fracture was achieved. Absorbable anchors were inserted into the subchondral bone defect beneath the reduced fragment. Initial stability was provided, and congruity of the articular surface is maintained. Compared with conventional app

Osteolytic changes after polyglycolide pin fixation in chevron osteotomy.

Absorbable polyglycolide pins were used for fixation of 94 chevron osteotomies in 70 patients at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Helsinki University Central Hospital, between 1986 and 1992. Postoperative osteolytic changes around the degrading pin occurred in 21 of 94 (22%) metatarsal heads. In 17 of 21 metatarsal heads, polydioxanone-coated polyglycolide pins were used. This type of pin has not been used since 1988. At follow-up, 16 of 21 osteolytic changes resolved completely and four partially resolved. In the remaining one, the osteolytic area remained visible after 6 year

Bioabsorbable implants for subtalar arthroereisis in pediatric flatfoot.

Flatfoot is a common condition in growing-age patients. Despite its common presentation, nowadays surgical indications and treatments are still debated. Arthroereisis is a widely used technique, and several implants designs have been proposed over time. Despite the good results shown in the literature, the main drawback of these techniques has always been the need for a second surgery for implant removal. Bioabsorbable devices have been introduced to overcome this necessity.Correct approach to the patient, indications and contraindications and available studies on bioabsorbable implants for su

[Controversy of subtalar arthroereisis in symptomatic flatfoot].

Flatfoot could be divided into flexible flatfoot and rigid flatfoot. Flatfoot with symptoms is called symptomatic flatfoot, surgical treatment is required if conservative treatment is not effective. Subtalar arthroereisis is a minimally invasive procedure which has been used for many years with good results in flexible flatfoot, however, still has many controversial points. Controversial points focus on indications and contraindications, optimal age, subtalar arthroereisis alone or not, efficacy and safety of absorbable material implants, and implant removal. The paper reviewed and summarized

Comparison of two different absorbable membranes for the coverage of lateral osteotomy sites in maxillary sinus augmentation: a preliminary study.

INTRODUCTION: Barrier membranes, both absorbable and non-absorbable, have been used in sinus augmentation for many years. Some years ago, a new autologous blood substrate called Platelet-Rich-Fibrin (PRF) was introduced, and to date, the supporting effect on bone regeneration has been controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of PRF on bone regeneration when used as a barrier membrane at the lateral osteotomy site in sinus augmentation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve sinuses from six patients requiring bilateral sinus floor augmentation were treated with a two-stage surgical techni

[Resorbable implants and their use exemplified by fracture of the head of the radius].

First a short survey of the variety of experiments concerning absorbable implants is given. The result of those experiments, especially with large implants are still quite unsatisfactory. For small osteosynthesis the development of Polydioxanon-Pins seems to open new perspectives of therapy. Also some selected indications in the field of hand surgery as well as maxillary surgery are mentioned. Promising characteristics of PDS-Pins, such as gentle application, complete absorbability, no late infections and no removal of metal plates, made us implant these pins in eight patients aged 35 to 58 su

Reconstruction of Inferior Orbital Wall Fractures Using Bone Fragments.

INTRODUCTION: Various materials have been used as implants in orbital floor fractures. The fractured bone fragments, however, are not usually used because of their small size and delicate characteristics. To overcome this limitation, the authors used autologous bone fragments combined with fibrin glue and an absorbable plate to repair inferior orbital wall fractures. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with orbital floor fractures treated in a single center from January 2013 to September 2014 were prospectively evaluated. Patients' demographic characteristics, clinical signs and symptoms, physical

[Resorbable implant materials in retinal detachment surgery. Initial animal experiment studies].

In detachment surgery after a mechanically stabile chorioretinal scar is at present full scleral indentation no longer mandatory. Following these considerations absorbable scleral implants have been developed and tested in an animal model. Cylindrical pieces of absorbable composite-material with a diameter of 5 mm were sutured as radial scleral explants in 18 rabbits. The composite material consisted of a polyglactin-polydioxanon ratio 7:1. The absorption time for polyglactin is 60 days, for polydioxanon 180 days. The explants produced initially in ultrasonographically measured buckle height b
