Eco-resilience of China's mangrove wetlands: The impact of heavy metal pollution and dynamics.

Mangrove forests in China have significantly degraded over the past several decades primarily due to rapid economic growth and land reclamation for aquaculture and infrastructure development. Among various threats, heavy metal pollution, primarily from urbanization, agricultural runoff, and industrial runoff, poses a substantial risk to mangroves in China. It impairs their ecological functions, limiting biodiversity and reducing their natural ability to sequester carbon and detoxify coastal areas. Despite these challenges, the mangrove ecosystem's resilience in China has not been completely co

Toxicity, growth and accumulation relationships of copper, lead and zinc in the grey mangrove Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh.

The effects of three heavy metals Copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn), and the interaction of an essential (Zn) and non-essential (Pb) metal on germination, growth, and accumulation of metals in the grey mangrove, Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh var. australasica (Walp.) Moldenke, were studied under laboratory conditions. Avicennia marina was found to be highly tolerant to the metals applied. Copper was accumulated in root tissue in a linear relationship at lower sediment concentrations, but at concentrations of 200 microg/g and higher, no further increases in root Cu levels occurred. Effects of Acanthus ebracteatus Vahl. extract and verbascoside on human dermal papilla and murine macrophage.

Androgenic alopecia is a common type of hair loss, usually caused by testosterone metabolism generating dihydrotestosterone and hair follicular micro-inflammation. These processes induce dermal papilla cells to undergo apoptosis. Currently approved effective medications for alopecia are Finasteride, an oral 5α-reductase inhibitor, Minoxidil, a topical hair growth promoter, and Diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory agent, all of which, however, have several adverse side effects. In our study, we showed the bioactivity of Acanthus ebracteatus Vahl. (AE) extract performed by 95% ethanol, and verbascos

Pollen Exposed to Aerial Pesticide Spray Is a Major Exposure Pathway for Stingless Bees.

Testing possible exposure routes of pesticides is essential for assessing the risks to pollinators. In Australia, the pesticide Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) is widely used in mosquito control programs and applied aerially to mangrove and saltmarsh habitats. Bti formulations contain both bacterial spores and toxins, allowing detection using DNA-based methods, whereas bee foraging behaviour can be quantified by pollen DNA metabarcoding. We combined these approaches to investigate both the foraging behaviour of stingless bees and their potential exposure to Bti in coastal mosquit

Attenuation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum sensing, virulence and biofilm formation by extracts of Andrographis paniculata.

Quorum-sensing (QS) is known to play an essential role in regulation of virulence factors and toxins during Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection which may frequently cause antibiotic resistance and hostile outcomes of inflammatory injury. Therefore, it is an urgent need to search for a novel agent with low risk of resistance development that can target QS and inflammatory damage prevention as well. Andrographis paniculata, a herbaceous plant under the family Acanthaceae, native to Asian countries and also cultivated in Scandinavia and some parts of Europe, has a strong traditional usage with its k
