The vectorial competence of the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus is discussed in relation to the epidemiology of canine visceral leishmaniasis, taking into account its strict association with dogs and the low indices of natural infection presented by its known vector, the phlebotomine sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis. In order to evaluate natural infection by Leishmania chagasi and the infectivity of these parasites in the tick, 39 specimens (6 females, 11 males and 22 nymphs) of R. sanguineus were removed from 21 dogs showing diverse symptoms of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL). Six ticks (15

A survey of ticks affecting dairy cattle under extensive management on Menorca island (off the Spanish Mediterranean coast) was performed through 1999-2000 on seven farms. The species collected were Rhipicephalus bursa, R. turanicus, Hyalomma m. marginatum, H. lusitanicum and Boophilus annulatus. The most abundant species were R. bursa and H. m. marginatum, with peaks of 10.7 (in summer) and 7.5 (in spring) ticks/cow, respectively. R. turanicus was scarcely encountered, while B. annulatus and H. lusitanicum were abundant only in a few localities. The mild climate and adequate vegetation on the

A colony of Amblyomma neumanni was started with engorged females collected from cattle in the province of Salta (24 degrees 51'S, 65 degrees 33'W), Argentina. The larvae and nymphs were fed on rabbits and the adults on calves. The non-parasitic stages were maintained in darkness at 27 +/- 1 degrees C and 83-86% RH. The life cycle (pre-feeding period not tested) had a mean duration of 205.7 days. The mean time (days) for the different phases of the cycle were as follows: feeding of females 8.8, pre-oviposition 23.8, oviposition 41.4, minimum egg incubation 76.1, feeding of larvae 8.5, pre-moult

Under controlled test conditions, unfed male and female Hyalomma truncatum ticks exhibited a positive scototaxis to stationary, two-dimensional targets. Upright-positioned rectangles were the most attractive targets. The attractiveness of these targets increased with their size. Significantly more ticks responded scototactically positively to the targets under a luminance contrast ratio of 5:1, as compared with other luminance contrast ratios. Targets with an elevation angle of 13 degrees were occupied more frequently than objects with higher elevation angles. Scototaxis was the same towards a

Chiggers were collected from rodents trapped at two military bases located 10 km apart in central Thailand. One site was swampy and nearly treeless and the other site was well-drained and partially wooded. Although 13 species of chiggers were collected, only three species were found to be positive for Rickettsia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi) Ogata using a direct fluorescent antibody test: Blankaartia acuscutellaris Walch (7.3% infected), Leptotrombidium delinese Walch (3.1% infected), and an undescribed species of Ascoschoengastia near A. indica Hirst (1.2% infected). This was the first record of R.

The house mouse (laboratory strain), Mus musculus (L.), the cotton mouse, Peromyscus gossypinus (LeConte), the broad-headed skink, Eumeces laticeps (Schneider), and the guinea pig, Cavia porcellus (L.), were successively infested five times with larvae of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say. Tick feeding success, engorgement weight, and subsequent molting success were measured after each infestation. A greater percentage of ticks (P less than 0.05) fed on M. musculus and E. laticeps than on P. gossypinus or C. porcellus. P. gossypinus expressed a transitory partial resistance, measured

Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Acaridae) is one of the most allergenic mite species worldwide, and it particularly infests household environments, animal feed factories, and food factories. It has been the aim of several studies recently in the healthcare area due to its allergenic potential. However, there had been no records of this species attacking laying birds until this report. This is the first record of adverse reactions in animals triggered by infestations of this species. Therefore, the present study aims at describing the damages and symptomatology of T. putrescentiae infestati

Eosinophilic dermatitis was observed in skin samples from Jersey cows, sampled in mid-October in south-west France. The inflammatory response was considered to be the result of Trombiculidae bites. Clinical signs were assumed to be due partly to self-trauma and included patchy alopecia with crusted papules; lesions were observed on the jaws, dewlap, perineum and distal limbs. Identified parasites were larvae of Leptotrombidium spp. The lesions had completely self-resolved by December.

Ticks are haematophagous arthropods that exert direct and indirect effects on their hosts. Their global importance as reservoirs and vectors of diseases of veterinary and public health importance is well recognized. However, the level of understanding of their role in disease epidemiology varies from one country to the other based on available data. Information on ticks infesting dogs across Nigeria and the public health significance is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to provide information on ixodid ticks infesting dogs in Nigeria. Ticks were collected from 608 owned dogs presented to vet

UNLABELLED: The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Latreille, 1806), is an ectoparasite and disease vector of significant veterinary and public health importance that is distributed widely around the world. The intensive use of synthetic acaricides for tick control exerts a strong selective pressure for brown dog ticks to become resistant to them. Here, we investigated claims from the field regarding treatment failure associated with the use of veterinary products containing ivermectin (IVM) to control brown dog ticks infesting dogs in Yucatan state, Mexico. Dogs in six state

Dermacentor everestianus Hirst, 1926, is only reported in Northwestern China and Nepal. Few researches about this species have been involved, especially for molecular characteristics. The taxonomy studies of D.everestianus are mainly based on morphological features, and its taxonomic status is an ongoing controversy. To clarify the molecular characteristics and phylogenetic status of D.everestianus and other related species, the sequences of mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and cox1 fragments were analyzed in the present study. Analysis of 16S rDNA and cox1 sequences showed 99.3-100% ide

The nymphal stage of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae), is responsible for most transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, to humans in North America. From 2010 to fall of 2012, we compared two commonly used techniques, flagging and dragging, as sampling methods for nymphal I. scapularis at three sites, each with multiple sampling arrays (grids), in the eastern and central United States. Flagging and dragging collected comparable numbers of nymphs, with no consistent differences between methods. Dragging collected more nymphs than flaggin

Roses on commercial nurseries commonly suffer from attacks by the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, which have a negative influence on growth and quality. The aim of this project is to find natural enemies that are well adapted to roses, and may improve biological control. At different sites such as a plant collection garden, public parks and field boundaries, leaves were sampled from roses to identify the indigenous species of predatory mites. Amblyseius andersoni was amongst other species frequently found, which suggests that this species thrives well on roses. The possibility fo

The bont tick, Amblyomma hebraeum Koch, is the principal vector of Rickettsia africae, the agent of African tick bite fever, in southern Africa. In contrast to most other hard ticks, members of the genus Amblyomma exhibit a characteristic attack host-seeking behavior. The efficacy of topically applied 20% lotions of DEET (diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), the currently considered reference repellent substance, and KBR 3023, a recently developed piperidine compound, was evaluated against laboratory-reared A. hebraeum nymphs on treated fingers. Both substances repelled >85% of nymph attacks at 0 and 1

The known fauna of livestock in the Maghreb consists of 5 established species. Five other species recorded seem to be introduced by imported animals. In this paper, dichotomous keys are given for species and subspecies of the genus Hyalomma. Rhipicephalus and Haemaphysalis parasite of livestock in North Africa. For the ticks of the other genera which are represented by only one species, we provide an identification description. Notes on geographical distribution, host and period of activity are provided.

In District Faisalabad, ticks, such as Hyalomma (H) anatolicum Koch and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus Canestrini (Ixodida: Ixodidae), are significant ectoparasites impacting livestock and wildlife, transmitting pathogens that lead to substantial economic losses. The increasing resistance of tick populations to conventional acaricides necessitates te exploration of potential complementary approaches as control strategies, including nanoparticle formulations. The acaricidal effect of sulfur (S) and copper (Cu) nanoparticles was evaluated against various life stages (eggs, larvae, and adult

Tick-borne diseases are a leading cause of death and illness worldwide. Disulfide isomerase (DSI) is an essential protein that helps tick bodies form natural protein structures so they can perform their biological functions after engorgement. In this study, we are exploring the role of DSI and present a potential strategy for tick management by interfering with DSI in ticks. HlDSI cDNA contains 1,119 nucleotides encoding 372 amino acids, and its molecular weight is 93.69 kilodaltons. BLAST analysis showed that the HlDSI protein was 99.10% identical to DSI-like proteins of other parasites. We i
