Acceleration of the autoxidation of nitric oxide by proteins.

Lipoproteins and lipid membranes accelerate •NO autoxidation by increasing local concentration of •NO and O2. Although the idea that proteins could also accelerate this reaction was presented some time ago, it was largely criticized and dismissed. Herein the effect of proteins on •NO autoxidation rates was studied following •NO disappearance with a selective electrode. It was found that human serum albumin (HSA) accelerated •NO autoxidation by a factor of 9 per g/mL of protein, much less than previously suggested. The acceleration by HSA was sensitive to pH and significantly decreased at pH lo

Alexander's law during high-acceleration head rotations in humans.

Alexander's law states that the amplitude of the spontaneous nystagmus grows with increasing gaze in the direction of the fast phase. Using the search-coil method we employed head impulses at various eye-in-orbit azimuth angles to test (i) whether the normal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in the behaviorally relevant high-frequency range has intrinsic properties that could account for Alexander's law and (ii) whether such properties can also be shown in patients with unilateral vestibulopathy. We showed that the gain of the VOR remained unaffected by eye-in-orbit position in contols and in pati

Acceleration tolerance at night with acute fatigue and stimulants.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of pharmacological agents on aviators concerns all flight surgeons. This study tested the related hypotheses that acute fatigue reduces +Gz tolerance and endurance, and that stimulants can partially reverse this impact. Additionally, the researchers attempted to develop a test battery sensitive enough to detect subtle differences in aviator cognition and performance among conditions. METHODS: To determine the effect of fatigue on +Gz tolerance and the impact of stimulant use, 10 male centrifuge subjects, mean age 32, from Brooks City-Base, TX, were tested in a repeate

Deformation of the human brain induced by mild acceleration.

Rapid deformation of brain matter caused by skull acceleration is most likely the cause of concussion, as well as more severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). The inability to measure deformation directly has led to disagreement and confusion about the biomechanics of concussion and TBI. In the present study, brain deformation in human volunteers was measured directly during mild, but rapid, deceleration of the head (20-30 m/sec2 peak, approximately 40 msec duration), using an imaging technique originally developed to measure cardiac deformation. Magnetic resonance image sequences with imposed "t

Motion sickness decreases arterial pressure and therefore acceleration tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is a common aeromedical problem that may occur in pilots exposed to increased gravitoinertial load in the head-to-foot direction (+Gz). Since motion sickness may affect autonomic nervous functions including cardiovascular control, it was hypothesized that it might interfere with cardiovascular responses to high +Gz, thereby decreasing G tolerance. METHODS: G tolerance and cardiovascular responses to increased G load were studied in nine subjects in a centrifuge environment under two conditions. In the motion sickness condition, the subject was exposed to a motion s

Noninvasive acceleration measurements to characterize knee arthritis and chondromalacia.

Devising techniques and instrumentation for early detection of knee arthritis and chondromalacia presents a challenge in the domain of biomedical engineering. The purpose of the present investigation was to characterize normal knees and knees affected by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and chondromalacia using a set of noninvasive acceleration measurements. Ultraminiature accelerometers were placed on the skin over the patella in four groups of subjects, and acceleration measurements were obtained during leg rotation. Acceleration measurements were significantly different in the four gro

Coriolis effects are principally caused by gyroscopic angular acceleration.

A cause of nausea evoked by cross-coupled rotation (termed Coriolis stimulus) was determined. Subjects were provided with two types of cross-coupled rotations: neck-forward flexion (Neck Flx) and upper body-forward flexion (Body Flx) during horizontal whole body rotation at a constant angular velocity. These Coriolis stimuli were given alternatively in an experimental sequence, and the severity of the nausea they evoked was compared by the subjects. The results indicated that the same quality of nausea was evoked by a slightly higher angular velocity during Body Flx (100.5 degrees/s) than duri

Motion sickness induced by sinusoidal linear acceleration in rats.

The characteristics of linear acceleration to cause motion sickness of rats were examined using pica as a behavioral index of motion sickness. A vestibular sled was used to generate sinusoidal linear acceleration. At 0.4 Hz and with a peak acceleration of 0.15 G, the effectiveness of linear acceleration in inducing motion sickness was X-axis > Y-axis > Z-axis. At 0.4 Hz and along the X-axis, rats suffered from more severe motion sickness with a high peak G load (0.15 G) than with a low one (0.08 G). Along the X-axis and with a peak acceleration of 0.15 G, the severity of motion sickness was no

Acceleration tolerance of asymptomatic aircrew with mitral valve prolapse.

Using the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine human centrifuge, 78 asymptomatic USAF aircrewmen with auscultatory and/or echocardiographic evidence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) were evaluated for tolerance to +Gz stress. Both rapid (1G X s-1) and gradual (1G X 15 s-1) onset acceleration profiles were used to determine +Gz tolerance. There were no unusual characteristics, among the clinical parameters measured, which allowed separation of individuals with MVP into subgroups with altered +Gz tolerance. The MVP group was found to have a normal response to gradual onset +Gz stress, both while rela

Electrocochleography and low-frequency harmonic acceleration in Meniere's disease.

We evaluated a series of 31 consecutive cases of Meniere's disease using electrocochleography (ECochG) and low-frequency harmonic acceleration (HA). The ECochG was positive for endolymphatic hydrops in 74% of the cases. A positive ECochG was strongly related to the degree of hearing loss. The results of harmonic acceleration were consistent with peripheral vestibular disorder in 80% of the cases. Five illustrative cases are also presented.

Harmonic acceleration tests as a measure of vestibular compensation.

The material presented in excerpted from patient evaluations. The study was performed with the use of the Contraves rotary chair. This testing modality was used at each patient visit. All other conventional auditory and ENG tests were also performed. These patients have been selected to illustrate the value of the harmonic acceleration (HA) test as a modality for monitoring patient progress. The HA graphs produced were a result of the presence or absence of central vestibular compensation. The findings on these investigations further confirm that HA test provide an objective monitor for vestib

Stereotactic radiosurgery and the linear accelerator: accelerating electrons in neurosurgery.

The search for efficacious, minimally invasive neurosurgical treatment has led to the development of the operating microscope, endovascular treatment, and endoscopic surgery. One of the most minimally invasive and exciting discoveries is the use of targeted, high-dose radiation for neurosurgical disorders. Radiosurgery is truly minimally invasive, delivering therapeutic energy to an accurately defined target without an incision, and has been used to treat a wide variety of pathological conditions, including benign and malignant brain tumors, vascular lesions such as arteriovenous malformations

Accelerated atherosclerosis.

The process of accelerated atherosclerosis appears to share common pathophysiologic mechanisms, namely, endothelial injury with early platelet involvement and subsequent progressive smooth muscle cell proliferation and thrombosis leading to vascular occlusion. Understanding the mechanisms of this process has made it possible to include strategies to limit vascular injury and reduce subsequent thrombotic and proliferating cellular responses. In contrast to spontaneous atherosclerosis, a more significant denuding endothelial injury appears to be the critical initiating event, followed by intense

Sex-specific acceleration of Alzheimer's pathogenesis by chronic sleep-deprivation.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep impairments likely contribute to Alzheimer's pathology, though specific contributions to disease progression are incompletely understood. We propose that autophagic impairment is associated with chronic sleep disruption and examine how sleep loss and stress influence disease development, including having impacts on proteostasis, cognition, and neural circuitry. METHODS: We sleep-disrupted 6-month-old APPNL-G-F mice for 2 weeks and behaviorally assessed sleep recovery, nesting, stress, and cognition. Subsequently, we analyzed markers of Alzheimer's pathology, stress, neuroi

Age-related adaptations in acceleration and deceleration control during gait.

This study aimed to clarify the age-related adaptations in propulsive and braking mechanisms during gait acceleration and deceleration. Spatiotemporal gait parameters; the anteroposterior (AP), mediolateral (ML), and vertical (V) components of the ground reaction force (GRF); and the center of mass external moment (COM Mext) were analyzed and compared between younger and older adults. Thirty younger and thirty older healthy participants were enrolled. The participants performed walking trials under normal, maximum, acceleration, and deceleration conditions; kinematic and kinetic data were coll

Spatial Ice Confinement Enabled Chemical Reaction Acceleration for Water Purification.

The frozen environment is recognized as an important physical and chemical sink for various environmental substances. However, progress in unraveling the fundamental mechanisms governing the reaction process and the conversion of substances within ice matrices remains limited. Here, we discovered that the direct electron transfer process of environmental contaminants is drastically accelerated during freezing, with pseudo-first-order rate constants increasing by orders of magnitude relative to ambient conditions. Contaminants were observed to significantly concentrate within the liquid regions

[Acceleration of postoperative macular edema recovery with hyperbaric oxygen therapy].

In our case study, we present a patient with postoperative macular edema who received hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as adjunctive treatment. Our study aimed to evaluate the potential therapeutic efficacy of HBOT in accelerating the healing process of postoperative macular edema. A 58-year-old healthy male developed blurred vision one week following phacoemulsification with multifocal intraocular lens implantation in the left eye, despite clear optical media. In spite of standard therapy administration (topical corticosteroid and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug - NSAID), his symptoms pers

Efficient acceleration of energetic electrons upstream of Earth's bow shock.

It is widely believed that astrophysical shocks can accelerate particles to ultra-relativistic energy, via the well-established diffusive shock acceleration mechanism. However, this mechanism requires seed particles with kinetic energy sufficiently high, whose origin is still an enigma. Here we show observational confirmation of an efficient electron pre-acceleration mechanism at the Earth's bow shock. This mechanism relies on a special V-shaped magnetic field configuration in the upstream solar wind, which channels the shock-reflected electrons back and thus enables them to be reflected by th

Intermittent hypoxia induces reversible epigenetic age acceleration in old mice.

Epigenetic mechanisms are considered adaptive regulators of gene expression, yet mechanisms driving aging-associated DNA methylation remain unclear. Prior work hinted that epigenetic aging might reflect a response to oxygen availability, with age‑differential methylation in immune cells enriched near binding sites for hypoxia‑responsive factors ARNT and REST. To test this hypothesis, we exposed adult (11 months) and old (23 months) mice to 1 month of intermittent hypoxia (IH) followed by normoxic recovery. IH induced epigenetic age acceleration in lungs, spleen, and heart in old mice only. Thi
