Not all screen time is sedentary: evidence from aligned smartphone sensing and accelerometry data in adults.

BACKGROUND: Screen time is frequently used as a proxy for sedentary behaviour in physical activity and public health research, an assumption largely derived from television viewing. However, because smartphones are portable, screentime can occur across diverse physical contexts. This raises uncertainty about whether it reliably reflects sedentary behaviour at the momentary level. METHODS: This opportunistic analysis used data from an ongoing cohort study of adult caregivers of preschool-aged children. Smartphone screen time was objectively assessed using the Android-based passive sensing app

Physical Activity by Accelerometry is Prospectively Associated With Lower Testosterone and Hirsutism Score Among Adolescent Girls.

PURPOSE: Physical activity (PA) is recommended for the management of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, it is not known whether PA modulates the risk of components of PCOS diagnostic criteria during adolescence. METHODS: We included participants from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children prospective cohort with objective measurement of PA and sedentary behavior using accelerometry between ages 11 and 15 years, biochemical and clinical measures of hyperandrogenism (serum total testosterone level at 15 years and self-reported hirsutism at 19 years), and self-rep

Accelerometry for sleep assessment in children: Criterium validity of different algorithms in wrist- and ankle-worn devices.

Polysomnography, the gold-standard for measuring sleep, is costly, intrusive and usually limited to 1 night. Actigraphy offers a more affordable, less intrusive method over multiple nights. However, little research validates ActiGraph accelerometers against polysomnography, especially in children. This study evaluated the validity of different algorithms and compared wrist versus ankle accelerometer placements for estimating sleep in children aged 1-12 years. Twenty-nine children undergoing overnight type 1 polysomnography wore ActiGraph accelerometers. Six algorithms were evaluated against po

Detecting Asymmetry of Upper Limb Activity with Accelerometry in Infants at Risk for Unilateral Spastic Cerebral Palsy.

AIMS: To examine whether accelerometry can quantitate asymmetry of upper limb activity in infants aged 3-12 months at risk for developing unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (USCP). METHOD: A prospective study was performed in 50 infants with unilateral perinatal brain injury at high risk of developing USCP. Triaxial accelerometers were worn on the ipsilateral and contralesional upper limb during the Hand Assessment for Infants (HAI). Infants were grouped in three age intervals (3-5 months, 5-7.5 months and 7.5 until 12 months). Each age interval group was divided in a group with and without as

A standardized accelerometry method for characterizing tremor: Application and validation in an ageing population with postural and action tremor.

BACKGROUND: Ordinal scales based on qualitative observation are the mainstay in the clinical assessment of tremor, but are limited by inter-rater reliability, measurement precision, range, and ceiling effects. Quantitative tremor evaluation is well-developed in research, but clinical application has lagged, in part due to cumbersome mathematical application and lack of established standards. OBJECTIVES: To develop a novel method for evaluating tremor that integrates a standardized clinical exam, wrist-watch accelerometers, and a software framework for data analysis that does not require advan

Measurement of accelerometry-based gait parameters in people with and without dementia in the field: a technical feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Gait analyses are an important tool to diagnose diseases or to measure the rehabilitation process of patients. In this context, sensor-based systems, and especially accelerometers, gain in importance. They are able to improve objectiveness of gait analyses. In clinical settings, there is usually a supervisor who gives instructions to the patients, but this can have an influence on patients' gait. It is expected that this effect will be smaller in field studies. OBJECTIVE: Aim of this study was to capture and evaluate gait parameters measured by a single waist-mounted accelerometer

Evoked accelerometry: a sensitive and accurate method for evaluating facial nerve function using a portable device.

A new electrodiagnostic technique has been developed which can be used to monitor facial nerve function. The technique has been termed "evoked accelerometry" (EAC) and is administered by a portable DC powered device. In performing a test, the device stimulates the facial nerve and then measures the evoked muscular response by a small accelerometer sensor affixed to the face with suction. The magnitude of the response is displayed as a digital readout on the device meter. The degree to which a reading is subnormal indicates the extent of nerve degeneration. In a study of normal participants the

Daily physical activity patterns across the menstrual cycle in eumenorrheic female athletes: an accelerometry-based study.

BACKGROUND: Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle (MC) influence various physiological parameters, yet their impact on daily physical activity (PA) behavior in naturally menstruating women remains under-researched, often lacking rigorous hormonal verification. METHODS: This prospective observational study aimed to examine variations in daily PA intensity and energy consumption across MC phases in eumenorrheic, female athletes [classification as level II or level III athletes according to McKay et al. (2022)] using accelerometry as an objective tool to measure PA. Twenty female athl

Accelerometry-based Energy Expenditure Estimation During Activities of Daily Living: A Comparison Among Different Accelerometer Compositions.

Physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) is an important parameter to monitor as it can be potentially used for obesity control. PAEE can be measured from breath-by-breath respiratory data, which can serve as a reference. Alternatively, PAEE can be predicted from the body movements, which can be measured and estimated with accelerometers. The body center of mass (COM) acceleration reflects the movements of the whole body and thus serves as a good predictor for PAEE. Therefore, it is desirable to attach the accelerometers to locations close to the COM. However, the wrist has also become a po

Effect of sensor number and location on accelerometry-based vertical ground reaction force estimation during walking.

Knee osteoarthritis is a major cause of global disability and is a major cost for the healthcare system. Lower extremity loading is a determinant of knee osteoarthritis onset and progression; however, technology that assists rehabilitative clinicians in optimizing key metrics of lower extremity loading is significantly limited. The peak vertical component of the ground reaction force (vGRF) in the first 50% of stance is highly associated with biological and patient-reported outcomes linked to knee osteoarthritis symptoms. Monitoring and maintaining typical vGRF profiles may support healthy gai

Associations between skeletal muscle energetics and accelerometry-based performance fatigability: Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging.

Performance fatigability is typically experienced as insufficient energy to complete daily physical tasks, particularly with advancing age, often progressing toward dependency. Thus, understanding the etiology of performance fatigability, especially cellular-level biological mechanisms, may help to delay the onset of mobility disability. We hypothesized that skeletal muscle energetics may be important contributors to performance fatigability. Participants in the Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging completed a usual-paced 400-m walk wearing a wrist-worn ActiGraph GT9X to derive the Pittsburgh P

Prehospital Spinal Immobilization: Effect of Effort on Kinematics of Voluntary Head-neck Motion Assessed using Accelerometry.

INTRODUCTION: Standards for immobilizing potentially spine-injured patients in the prehospital environment are evolving. Current guidelines call for more research into treatment practices. Available research into spinal immobilization (SI) reveals a number of limitations. PROBLEM: There are currently few techniques for measuring head and neck motion that address identified limitations and can be adapted to clinically relevant scenarios. This study investigates one possible method. METHODS: Study participants were fitted with miniaturized accelerometers to record head motion. Participants wer

Associations of accelerometry-derived time in major activity intensities with cognitive outcomes: a compositional data analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), and sleep are modifiable lifestyle factors linked to cognitive health. Prior research has largely relied on self-report to measure these constructs or ignored the compositional nature of these data. We applied compositional data analysis (CoDA) to quantify the association between accelerometry-derived measures of time in major activity domains and cognitive outcomes among older adults. METHODS: Participants were 927 older adults (Mage = 82.71 years, SD = 3.99, range = 76-95) from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study

Facilitating ambulatory heart rate variability analysis using accelerometry-based classifications of body position and self-reported sleep.

Objective. This study aimed to examine differences in heart rate variability (HRV) across accelerometer-derived position, self-reported sleep, and different summary measures (sleep, 24 h HRV) in free-living settings using open-source methodology.Approach.HRV is a biomarker of autonomic activity. As it is strongly affected by factors such as physical behaviour, stress, and sleep, ambulatory HRV analysis is challenging. Beat-to-beat heart rate (HR) and accelerometry data were collected using single-lead electrocardiography and trunk- and thigh-worn accelerometers among 160 adults participating in

Referent data for investigations of upper limb accelerometry: harmonized data from three cohorts of typically-developing children.

AIM: The rise of wearable sensing technology shows promise for addressing the challenges of measuring motor behavior in pediatric populations. The current pediatric wearable sensing literature is highly variable with respect to the number of sensors used, sensor placement, wearing time, and how data extracted from the sensors are analyzed. Many studies derive conceptually similar variables via different calculation methods, making it hard to compare across studies and clinical populations. In hopes of moving the field forward, this report provides referent upper limb wearable sensor data from
