AIM: We compared the control of breathing and heart rate by hypoxia between high- and low-altitude populations of Peromyscus mice, to help elucidate the physiological specializations that help high-altitude natives cope with O2 limitation.
METHODS: Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) native to high altitude and congeneric mice native to low altitude (Peromyscus leucopus) were bred in captivity at sea level. The F1 progeny of each population were raised to adulthood and then acclimated to normoxia or hypobaric hypoxia (12 kPa, simulating hypoxia at ~4300 m) for 5 months. Responses to acute hypo

Dirofilariosis caused by the Dirofilaria repens nematodes is widely dispersed in southern Europe, Asia and Africa among dogs, cats, other carnivores and occasionally, humans. The first case of D. repens infection, found in Poland in 2007, concerned humans. In 2009, dirofilariosis was first registered in dogs in 3 focuses in central Poland, Warsaw, Pruszków and Zyrardów, whose range grew considerably with the subsequent identification of D. repens microfilariae in 119 dogs in Warsaw and 18 districts of the Mazowieckie Province. The microfilariae of D. repens were found in blood samples taken fr

We investigated physiological responses and changes in circulating immune cells following exercise in cold and thermoneutral conditions. Participants were short track skaters (n=9) who were acclimatized to cold conditions, and inline skaters (n=10) who were not acclimatized. All skaters were young, and skating at a recreational level three days per week for at least one year. Using a cross-over design, study variables were measured during 60 min of submaximal cycling (65% [Formula: see text]O2max) in cold (ambient temperature: 5±1°C, relative humidity: 41±9%) and thermoneutral conditions (ambi

Cerebral hypoxaemia associated with rapid ascent to high altitude can be life threatening; yet, with proper acclimatization, cerebral function can be maintained well enough for humans to thrive. We investigated adjustments in global and regional cerebral oxygen delivery (DO2) as 21 healthy volunteers rapidly ascended and acclimatized to 5260 m. Ultrasound indices of cerebral blood flow in internal carotid and vertebral arteries were measured at sea level, upon arrival at 5260 m (ALT1; atmospheric pressure 409 mmHg) and after 16 days of acclimatization (ALT16). Cerebral DO2 was calculated as th

The purpose of this study was to investigate the thermoregulatory mechanisms underlying artificial acclimatization to cold and to compare them with those of naturally acclimatized men. Six white men were cooled, nude, in air at 10 degrees C for 2 h before and after they had been acclimatized by ten daily cold (15 degrees C) baths of 30-60 min followed by rapid rewarming in hot (38-42 degrees C) water, and again 4 months later after acclimatization had decayed. Six control subjects also underwent the same tests, providing an opportunity to discriminate between changes caused by the immersions a

The calorigenic response (millilitres O2 per gram pre hour) to injected norepinephrine (NE) was compared as an index of nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) in the following groups of the Alaska red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rutilus): (1) summer, (2) fall acclimatized, (3) winter acclimatized, (4) 20 degrees C acclimated and (5) 5 degrees C acclimated. The metabolic response was tested at thermoneutrality (25 degrees C) and during cold exposure (5 degrees C). Winter acclimatized voles showed a significantly greater metabolic response to NE than summer voles at both 25 degrees C and 5 degrees C. I

OBJECTIVE: Alterations in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral oxygenation are implicated in altitude-associated diseases. We assessed the dynamic changes in CBF and peripheral and cerebral oxygenation engendered by ascent to altitude with partial acclimatization and hyperventilation using a combination of near-infrared spectroscopy, transcranial Doppler ultrasound, and diffuse correlation spectroscopy.
METHODS: Peripheral (Spo2) and cerebral (Scto2) oxygenation, end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2), and cerebral hemodynamics were studied in 12 subjects using transcranial Doppler and diffuse co

We examined the cardiorespiratory and cerebrovascular responses to hyperoxic and hypoxic rebreathing at low attitude and high altitude. We measured ventilation, middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity (MCAv) and arterial blood pressure in conditions of eucapnia, hypocapnia (voluntary hyperventilation) and during hyperoxic and hypoxic rebreathing firstly at low altitude (1400 m) then again at high altitude (3840 m) in five individuals, following 9 days at altitude >5000 m. High altitude was associated with elevations in the blood pressure response to hyperoxic rebreathing, whilst cerebrovasc

BACKGROUND: Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is an important determinant of endurance performance. Heat acclimation/acclimatization (HA/HAz) elicits improvements in endurance performance. Upon heat exposure reduction, intermittent heat training (IHT) may alleviate HA/HAz adaptation decay; however, corresponding VO2max responses are unknown.
HYPOTHESIS: VO2max is maintained after HAz/HA; IHT mitigates decrements in aerobic power after HAz/HA.
STUDY DESIGN: Interventional study.
LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3.
METHODS: A total of 27 male endurance runners (mean ± SD; age, 36 ± 12 years; body mass,

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? We assessed the utility of a new metric for quantifying ventilatory acclimatization to high altitude, derived from differential ascent and descent steady-state cardiorespiratory variables (i.e. hysteresis). Furthermore, we aimed to investigate whether the magnitude of cardiorespiratory hysteresis was associated with the development of acute mountain sickness. What is the main finding and its importance? Hysteresis in steady-state cardiorespiratory variables quantifies ventilatory acclimatization to high altitude. The magnitude of cardio

The foramen ovale, which is part of the normal fetal cardiopulmonary circulation, fails to close after birth in ∼35% of the population and represents a potential source of right-to-left shunt. Despite the prevalence of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in the general population, cardiopulmonary, exercise, thermoregulatory, and altitude physiologists may have underestimated the potential effect of this shunted blood flow on normal physiological processes in otherwise healthy humans. Because this shunted blood bypasses the respiratory system, it would not participate in either gas exchange or respirato

In the present study, we report the molecular mechanisms of action by cobalt in facilitating acclimatization to hypobaric hypoxia using male Sprague-Dawley rats as the model system. We determined hypoxic gasping time and survival time as a measure to assess the degree of tolerance of animals to hypobaric hypoxia by exposing the animals to an altitude of 10,668 m. Oral administration of cobalt chloride (12.5 mg Co/kg body weight, BW, for 7 days) increased gasping time and hypoxic survival time by 3 to 4 times compared to the control animals. This could be attributed to an increased expression a

Exposure to high altitudes for hours or days is defined as acute hypobaric hypoxia (AHH) condition, which rapidly engages adjustments such as signaling pathways involving inflammation, immune modulation and oxidative stress, whose dysregulation has been described as contributing to the pathophysiology of high-altitude illnesses, due to insufficient acclimatization, such as developing acute mountain sickness (AMS). Given its traditional high-altitude use and bioactive properties, Senecio nutans (S. nutans) extract, or chachacoma (CH), has emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy to mitigate

BACKGROUND: The most common management option for hearing loss is hearing aids. In addition to devices, patients require information and support, including maintenance and troubleshooting. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies can support hearing aid management, acclimatization, and use. This study developed an mHealth acclimatization and support program for first-time hearing aid users and subsequently implemented and pilot-tested the feasibility of the program. The program was facilitated by community health workers (CHWs) in low-income communities in South Africa.
OBJECTIVE: This study aime

Early acclimatization to high altitude is characterized by various respiratory, hematological, and cardiovascular adaptations that serve to restore oxygen delivery to tissue. However, less is understood about renal function and the role of renal oxygen delivery (RDO2) during high altitude acclimatization. We hypothesized that 1) RDO2 would be reduced after 12 h of high altitude exposure (high altitude day 1) but restored to sea level values after 1 wk (high altitude day 7) and 2) RDO2 would be associated with renal reactivity, an index of acid-base compensation at high altitude. OBJECTIVE: Considering the adverse effects of exercise-induced cortisol secretion on health in athletes, it is important to determine the environmental and individual factors that contribute to the variations in exercise-induced cortisol secretion. In this study, the effects of cold environment exposure and cold acclimatization on exercise-induced salivary cortisol responses were investigated.
METHODS: Short track skaters (n = 11), who usually practice under cold conditions, and inline skaters (n = 11), who usually practice under room temperature conditions, participated in a randomized cross

In three awake dogs in a hypobaric chamber at 140 m and at 3550 m, resting ventilation, pulmonary gas exchanges, respiratory gases and pH of the arterial blood, acid-base status in the cerebrospinal fluid (csf), and ventilatory responses to transient O2-inhalation were studied before (intact) and after chronic bilateral carotid body denervation (cbd). 1. The hypoxic chemoreflex drive of ventilation was reduced by about half in cbd dogs. 2. At low altitude, sino-carotid body denervation resulted in hypoventilation and respiratory acidosis in the arterial blood and csf. 3. At high altitude, init

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged physical exertion in hot and/or humid environments can induce physiological strain and increase the risk of heat exhaustion or exertional heat stroke (EHS). Heat acclimatization (HA) optimizes an individual's ability to tolerate heat and is therefore widely adopted to improve exercise performance in thermally challenging environments. Sweat is a key thermoregulatory indicator reflective of physiological adaptations during HA and hence is regarded as a valuable resource for monitoring HA. However, knowledge of molecular-level changes and adaptations in sweat associated w
