Contextualizing linguistic acculturation and alcohol use among Hispanic college students in the social digital environment.

OBJECTIVES: Linguistic acculturation is a predictor of alcohol use among Hispanic college students, but existing linguistic acculturation measures do not capture language use in the social digital context (e.g., social media). Guided by erosion theory and past empirical findings, this study operationalized two dimensions of social digital linguistic acculturation (SDLA) and examined the interactive effects of SDLA with immigration generation-a demographic proxy for acculturation-in relation to alcohol use intentions and behaviors. METHOD: Online questionnaires were completed by 246 Hispanic c

Acculturation, Bilateral Hostility, and Psychological Wellbeing of U.S.-dwelling Chinese during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked hostility against Chinese immigrants and sojourners in the U.S. and other countries. Making the situation worse, strong resentment against this group has also emerged in China due to the fear of returnees spreading the disease. Integrating research on acculturation and hostile media perception, we examined how such bilateral hostility along with different acculturation components (i.e., cultural identification, COVID-19-related media use, and individualistic-collectivistic value) influenced U.S.-dwelling Chinese's psychological well-being during the COVID-19 p

Explicating Acculturation Strategies among Asian American Youth: Subtypes and Correlates across Filipino and Korean Americans.

Acculturation strategy, a varying combination of heritage and mainstream cultural orientations and one of the significant determinants of youth development, has been understudied with Asian American youth and particularly at a subgroup-specific level. This study used person-oriented latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify acculturation strategy subtypes among Filipino American and Korean American adolescents living in the Midwest. Associations between the subtypes and numerous correlates including demographics, family process and youth outcomes were also examined. Using large scale survey da

Acculturation, Behavioral Factors, and Family History of Breast Cancer among Mexican and Mexican-American Women.

BACKGROUND: Incidence rates for breast cancer are higher among Mexican-American (MA) women in the United States than women living in Mexico. Studies have shown higher prevalence of breast cancer risk factors in more acculturated than less acculturated Hispanic/Latinas in the United States. We compared the prevalence of behavioral risk factors and family history of breast cancer by level of acculturation and country of residence in women of Mexican descent. METHODS: Data were collected from 1,201 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients living in Mexico (n = 581) and MAs in the United States (n

Acculturation and celiac disease risk in second-generation immigrants: a nationwide cohort study in Sweden.

OBJECTIVES: The burden of celiac disease (CD) is increasingly recognized as a global problem. However, whether this situation depends on genetics or environmental factors is uncertain. The authors examined these aspects in Sweden, a country in which the risk of CD is generally considered to be high. If environmental factors are relevant, CD risk in second-generation immigrant children should be related to maternal length of stay in Sweden before delivery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Linking the Swedish Medical Birth Registry to other national registries, the authors investigated all singleton child

Acculturation predicts 7-day smoking cessation among treatment-seeking African-Americans in a group intervention.

BACKGROUND: African-Americans suffer disproportionately from tobacco-associated morbidity and mortality. Considering the relationship between cultural variables and cessation may be important for reducing disparities. PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine acculturation as a predictor of smoking cessation following a standard group intervention. METHODS: Treatment-seeking smokers (N = 140) participated in a group intervention for cessation plus transdermal nicotine patch therapy and completed the African American Acculturation Scale-Revised at baseline. The primary outcome was self-reported 7-

Acculturation and its relationship to smoking and breast self-examination frequency in African American women.

The concept of acculturation has been used to understand differences in health behaviors between and within a variety of racial and ethnic immigrant groups. Few studies, however, have examined the potential impact of acculturation on health behaviors among African Americans. The present study has two goals: 1) to reconfirm relations between acculturation and cigarette smoking; 2) to investigate the impact of acculturation on another type of health behavior, cancer screening and specifically breast self-examination (BSE). African American women (N = 66) attending an inner-city cancer-screening

Food acculturation and nutrient intake among international students in India: an exploratory cross-cultural study.

INTRODUCTION: Food acculturation and dietary transitions among international students (IS) in Western countries have been reported to result in undesirable changes in eating behaviors and dietary patterns, which may negatively affect nutritional status and health after migration. These dietary changes may be influenced by various factors specific to the host country. Given the recent increase in IS enrollment in culturally diverse Asian countries such as India, there is a need to investigate food acculturation in the Indian context. Therefore, this study explored food acculturation, changes in

Digital trajectories of acculturation: social media practices among a sample of African female domestic workers.

Globalization and cross-cultural migration have intensified the movement of individuals across national and cultural boundaries, particularly among migrants employed in feminized labor sectors. Within these contexts, acculturation is shaped not only by face-to-face interactions but also by engagement with digital media. This study examines how and why African female domestic workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) use social media and how these practices shape their acculturation experiences. Using a qualitative research design, the study draws on in-depth interviews with African female dome

The Associations between Depression, Acculturation, and Cardiovascular Health among African Immigrants in the United States.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death both globally and in the United States (U.S.). Racial health disparities in cardiovascular health (CVH) persist with non-Hispanic Black adults having a higher burden of CVD morbidity and mortality compared to other racial groups. African immigrants represent an increasingly growing sub-population of the overall U.S. non-Hispanic Black adult population, however little is known about how specific psychological and social factors (i.e., depression and acculturation) influence the CVH of U.S. African immigrants. We sought to examine the as

A review of bidimensional acculturation and STI/HIV-related sexual risk behaviours among Hispanic youth.

A growing body of research suggests that acculturation may play a role in the disproportionate likelihood of sexual risk behaviour and STI/HIV infection among Hispanic youth in the USA. We systematically reviewed the relationship between acculturation and STI/HIV-related sexual risk behaviour among Hispanic youth aged 13-24 by reviewing studies that have used a bidimensional acculturation approach. Electronic databases were searched with the searches limited to articles published in 1992 when the concept of bidimensional acculturation was introduced or later. Two independent researchers screen

How Refugees' Stereotypes Toward Host Society Members Predict Acculturation Orientations: The Role of Perceived Discrimination.

Refugee migration leads to increased diversity in host societies and refugees have to face many stereotyped attitudes in the host society. However, there has been little research on minority group stereotypes toward host society members and how these stereotypes relate to the acculturation-relevant attitudes of refugees in their first phase of acculturation. This study surveyed 783 refugees in Germany who had migrated mostly in the so-called "refugee crisis" between 2015 and 2016. At the time of the survey in 2018, they had been in Germany for an average of 27 months (SD = 15 months). These re

Depression in Latina mothers: Examining the roles of acculturation, enculturation, social support, and family resources.

OBJECTIVES: Previous findings on the relationship between acculturation and depression have been mixed, such that acculturation has been demonstrated as a protective factor, risk factor, and neutral factor for depressive symptomology. The current study sought to clarify this association by examining the roles of acculturation and enculturation (retention of traditional values and practices) on depression while incorporating contextual variables such as social support and resource adequacy. METHOD: This study utilized archived data from 308 Latina mothers who participated in a randomized clini

Selected acculturation factors and birth defects in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, 1997-2011.

BACKGROUND: Acculturation has been examined with respect to various pregnancy adverse outcomes, including birth defects. Given the mixed and limited findings on the association between nativity and birth defects, we sought to further explore parental nativity and years lived in the U.S. across a range of defects. METHODS: Data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study were used for this analysis. Infants with one of 46 major isolated birth defects (30 noncardiac/16 cardiac conditions) and infants without birth defects (controls) born during 1997-2011 were included. We examined parental

Latino parent acculturation stress: Longitudinal effects on family functioning and youth emotional and behavioral health.

Latino parents can experience acculturation stressors, and according to the Family Stress Model (FSM), parent stress can influence youth mental health and substance use by negatively affecting family functioning. To understand how acculturation stressors come together and unfold over time to influence youth mental health and substance use outcomes, the current study investigated the trajectory of a latent parent acculturation stress factor and its influence on youth mental health and substance use via parent-and youth-reported family functioning. Data came from a 6-wave, school-based survey wi

Mexican American adolescent couples' vulnerability for observed negativity and physical violence: Pregnancy and acculturation mismatch.

Stress and vulnerability for dating violence may be heightened among acculturating Mexican American (MA) adolescents, and MA adolescent parents, because of differing cultural values and norms within romantic relationships. We hypothesized, in a sample of MA heterosexual couples (N = 30, 15-17 years), that: 1) within-couple level acculturation discrepancies, and pregnancy/parenting, would predict physical violence perpetration, and 2) that this association would have an indirect effect through couple-level negativity during an observed dyadic video-taped discussion of conflict. Using a path mod

Situating Chinese American husbands' traditional gender beliefs within acculturative and marital processes.

OBJECTIVE: Confucian beliefs emphasize the role of husbands as financial providers and authority figures, whereas wives are tasked with managing household matters. Such beliefs in men may have negative effects on their partners within heterosexual couples. However, these concepts have rarely been examined with Chinese American families. The present study situated Chinese American husbands' traditional gender beliefs within paths from their cultural orientations to their wives' outcomes. METHOD: Among 416 Chinese American married couples and across three waves of data, path analyses examined i

The spiral of disadvantage: Ethnolinguistic discrimination, acculturative stress and health in Nahua indigenous communities in Mexico.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that ethnic and ethnolinguistic discrimination, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) related to being Indigenous as well as different aspects of acculturative stress, are associated with poorer health and higher levels of depression among the Nahua Indigenous communities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our quantitative survey was carried out in four different regions inhabited by the Nahua people in Mexico. Domains of acculturation and their effects on substance use and sexual behavior in recent Hispanic immigrant adolescents.

This study evaluated the immigrant paradox by ascertaining the effects of multiple components of acculturation on substance use and sexual behavior among recently immigrated Hispanic adolescents primarily from Mexico (35 %) and Cuba (31 %). A sample of 302 adolescents (53 % boys; mean age 14.51 years) from Miami (n = 152) and Los Angeles (n = 150) provided data on Hispanic and US cultural practices, values, and identifications at baseline and provided reports of cigarette use, alcohol use, sexual activity, and unprotected sex approximately 1 year later. Results indicated strong gender differen

Weight changes and eating attitudes of Japanese adolescents under acculturative stresses: a prospective study.

An increased rate of pathological eating attitudes has been reported among the people under acculturative stresses. We therefore carried out a prospective study of eating patterns in a cohort of 144 Japanese adolescents who spent 1 year with a host family in various countries of the world. The subjects showed a statistically significant gain in standardized body weight. Although the students did not report greater prevalence of abnormal eating attitudes under acculturative stresses than before, a substantial minority of them manifested maladaptive eating patterns. Among the psychosocial variab
