Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) is a gram-negative organism that has emerged recently as a major cause of nosocomial infections, because of the extent of its antimicrobial resistance and its persistence in the hospital environment, where intensive care units are the place of greatest risk for acquiring AB. There is no treatment of choice for AB and it's treatment is based on clinical experience and in vitro susceptibility testing. Also, nowadays Acinetobacter resistance to carbapenems is common and isolates resistant to colistin and polymyxin B have been reported. Tigecycline, the 9-tert-butyl-gl

UNLABELLED: The Gram-negative pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii is considered an "urgent threat" to human health due to its propensity to become antibiotic resistant. Understanding the distinct regulatory paradigms used by A. baumannii to mitigate cellular stresses may uncover new therapeutic targets. Many γ-proteobacteria use the extracytoplasmic function (ECF) σ factor, RpoE, to invoke envelope homeostasis networks in response to stress. Acinetobacter species contain the poorly characterized ECF "SigAb"; however, it is unclear if SigAb has the same physiological role as RpoE. Here, we show th

BACKGROUND: Lignin holds great potential as an abundant and sustainable source of aromatic compounds, offering a viable alternative to fossil-based resources for producing chemicals and materials. Biological upgrading of lignin-derived aromatics can lead to more comprehensive lignocellulose utilization, thereby enhancing the overall feasibility of production. However, exploring a broader range of potential microbial hosts, pathways, and enzymes is crucial for developing efficient conversion processes. In particular, improving the conversion of S-lignin-related aromatics, such as syringate, rem

Antimicrobial resistance (AR) is a major global threat to public health. Understanding the population dynamics of AR is critical to restrain and control this issue. However, no study has provided a global picture of the whole resistome of Acinetobacter baumannii, a very important nosocomial pathogen. Here we analyse 1450+ genomes (covering >40 countries and >4 decades) to infer the global population dynamics of the resistome of this species. We show that gene flow and horizontal transfer have driven the dissemination of AR genes in A. baumannii. We found considerable variation in AR gene conte

Rods of the Acinetobacter genus are present mainly in the external environment (e.g. water, soil) and in animals, while in humans they may comprise physiological flora. The main pathogenic species is Acinetobacter baumannii complex, which constitutes a common cause of nosocomial infections, particularly in patients with underlying diseases and risk factors (e.g. prior broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, malignancy, central venous catheter, mechanical ventilation); however, infections of the eye caused by strains of Acinetobacter spp. are very rare. We report a unique case of community-acquired

The distribution of the 19 currently known genospecies of Acinetobacter on human skin, i.e. forehead, forearm and toe webs, was determined. Three selective media were compared for their specificity for all genospecies of Acinetobacter. A minimal-salts agar supplemented with 1% acetate proved to be more efficient than the Leeds medium for the isolation of most genospecies in mixed culture with other bacterial species. Acinetobacter isolates were provisionally identified using biochemical tests and the DNA transformation assay of Juni. Genospecies identification was performed using amplified rib

The growing global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in cutaneous wound infections, represents a significant clinical and economic challenge. Biofilm formation by multidrug-resistant pathogens, such as Acinetobacter baumannii, often complicates healing and leads to therapeutic failure. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics due to their potent membrane-disrupting mechanism of action and lower propensity to induce resistance. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and in vivo efficac

INTRODUCTION: Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) infections pose a global health threat due to high mortality, rising resistance, and limited treatment options.
AREAS COVERED: Worldwide, OXA-type carbapenemases are the predominant mechanism of resistance; other mechanisms, including efflux pumps, porin mutations, and, rarely, metallo-β-lactamases, may contribute to resistance in resistant isolates, complicating management. Despite the different publication dates, both the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infec

Acinetobacter baumannii is a highly antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogen known to cause severe life-threatening infections, including pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis. Recent emergence of this bacterium as a serious nosocomial pathogen has led to categorization of A. baumannii as a "high-priority" pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO), for which research efforts are urgently required to develop therapeutic interventions. Some of the properties that make A. baumannii a serious pathogen include its capacity to tolerate high levels of stress and enhanced expression of efflux pumps t

Acinetobacter baumannii infection of skin and soft tissues is uncommon and usually associated with trauma. The present report describes 2 pediatric cases of cellulitis in the orofacial region, caused by A. baumannii infection with a fatal outcome. A 12-year-old male patient, diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, presented with an ulcerated lesion on the lip suggestive of local trauma. The condition progressed to cellulitis, epithelial necrosis, and nonspecific vesicles and blisters. The second case occurred in a 10-year-old male patient with a diagnosis of Burkitt lymphoma. The patient'

BACKGROUND: A case of Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii), known as gram-negative bacteria, causes a range of nosocomial infections. Due to the continuous detection of multi-drug resistant A. baumannii in the clinic, there is an urgent need to find alternative therapies, including broad-spectrum antibacterial peptides (AMP). Recently it has been found that the peptide Cec4 has good antibacterial activity against A. baumannii, but the antibacterial mechanism remains elusive.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The basic structure of Cec4 was analyzed by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, and the pote

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is an opportunistic pathogen associated with serious hospital acquired infections. It is resistant to multiple antibiotics. The therapy for infections due to this bacterium is a combination of aminoglycosides with carbapenem antibiotics. There are recent reports of the prevalence of ami-noglycoside resistance among A. baumannii. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of phosphotransferases APH (3')-Via (aphA6), acetyltransferases AAC (3)-Ia (aacC1), nucleotidyl transferases ANT (2'')-Ia (aadB), and ANT (3") -Ia (aadA1) ge

Carbapenem resistant Acinetobacter has appeared an organism of uncertain resistivity towards antimicrobial agents. Among non-fermenting bacterium Acinetobacter is the second-most-commonly-isolated organisms in human. The fast intensify of their resistance to antibiotics, especially global emergence and extend of Acinetobacter strains resistant to carbapenem more restricted the therapeutic alternatives. The importation of A. baumannii and subsequent presence in hospitals has been well documented. In this study we evaluate the resistivity of Acinetobacter against carbapenem antibiotics at Jinnah

Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged in the last decades as a major cause of healthcare-associated infections and nosocomial outbreaks. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) A. baumannii is a rapidly emerging pathogen in healthcare settings, where it causes infections that include bacteremia, pneumonia, meningitis, and urinary tract and wound infections. Antimicrobial resistance poses great limits for therapeutic options in infected patients, especially if the isolates are resistant to the carbapenems. Other therapeutic options include sulbactam, aminoglycosides, polymixyns and tigecycline. The discovery o
