Adsorptive removal of anionic dyes using magnetic hydrogel based on almond gum-grafted-poly (acrylamide) crosslinked N, N'-methylene bis acrylamide: Kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamic insights.

Dye effluents form a significant amount of textile industry wastewater. Zero liquid discharge norms for the textile industry make it compulsory to treat these effluents and reuse them for the next batch. The present work aimed at the effective removal of congo red (CR) and aniline blue (AB) dyes by treating them with an almond gum-based novel magnetic hydrogel (Amg-g-PAM-cl-MBA/Fe₃O₄). The magnetic hydrogel showed a saturated magnetization value of 6.32 emu/g, suggesting ferromagnetic behaviour. Various factors, including concentrations of dye solution, dosages, pH, temperature, and contact ti

Detection and Quantification of Acrylamide in Second Trimester Amniotic Fluid Using a Novel LC-MS/MS Technique to Determine Whether High Acrylamide Content during Pregnancy Is Associated with Fetal Growth.

INTRODUCTION: Acrylamide, an organic compound, is, chemically speaking, a vinyl-substituted primary amide. It is produced industrially, principally as a precursor to polyacrylamides, for use in such products as plastics and cosmetics. This same compound, however, forms naturally in certain foods, both home-cooked and packaged, especially when prepared at high temperatures. We developed and validated a novel reliable technique for the determination of acrylamide in amniotic fluid. Multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) is a targeted mass spectrometry (MS) technique which enables the detection and q

Association between acrylamide hemoglobin adduct levels and rheumatoid arthritis: A NHANES analysis.

Acrylamide is a widespread environmental and dietary contaminant, and hemoglobin adducts of acrylamide (HbAA) and its metabolite glycidamide (HbGA) serve as objective biomarkers of internal exposure. However, the association between acrylamide exposure and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has not been well characterized at the population level. We analyzed data from 4 cycles of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003-2006 and 2013-2016), including 1972 adults aged ≥20 years with complete information on RA status and acrylamide hemoglobin adduct measurements. Melatonin modulates SHH/GLI3 signaling and placental angiogenesis to counter acrylamide embryotoxicity.

Acrylamide (ACR), a prevalent dietary toxicant formed in thermally processed foods via the Maillard reaction, is known to cross the placental barrier. While ACR-induced reproductive and developmental toxicity has been reported, the protective role of melatonin (MTN) via modulation of the SHH/GLI3 signaling pathway remains unclear. Pregnant Balb/c mice were divided into three groups (n = 6/group): control (distilled water), ACR (50 mg/kg/d), and ACR (50 mg/kg/d) + MTN (10 mg/kg/d), treated orally from gestational day (GD) 3.5 to GD 13.5. Placentas and embryos were collected for analysis. Oxidat

Determination of acrylamide levels in chips/crisps on the Italian market and exposure risk assessment.

Acrylamide is an important concern in the food industry because it can form during cooking at high temperatures of foods, mainly of vegetable origin, and rich in carbohydrates. In this study, we detected the acrylamide levels in chips/crisps from five brands available on the Italian market and performed the risk assessment related to the exposure to acrylamide through the consumption of chips/crisps. A total of 50 samples were prepared and the acrylamide levels were determined by HPLC. The mean acrylamide value was 1116.6 ± 585 μg/kg, and two out of five brands showed higher values. EDI values

Biochemical and histopathological changes in ovary, uterus and testicular tissues after acrylamide exposure.

Acrylamide (ACR) is a popular substance to which our exposure increases with the changes in our lifestyle and brings with it various health problems. In order to determine appropriate therapeutics against ACR damage, it is important to investigate the multiple mechanisms that may be effective in its pathophysiology. This study investigated the effects of ACR exposure on ovarian, uterine, and testicular tissues by considering different pathophysiological pathways. Male-control (MC), male-acrylamide (MACR), female-control (FC), and female-acrylamide (FACR) groups were formed. ACR was administere

Blueberry anthocyanins and their metabolites synergistically alleviated ferroptosis induced by acrylamide in HepG2 cells.

Acrylamide (ACR), which is formed in foods during high-temperature cooking, triggers ferroptosis in the liver. Blueberry anthocyanins (BAs) are effective in protecting the liver against ACR-induced injury; however, this effect is also associated with metabolites generated in vivo. To determine their functional interaction with ACR defense, the dominating anthocyanin monomer-cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) and metabolites gallic acid (GA), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HA), and vanillic acid (VA) according to our previous study were combined to explore their influence on ferroptosis in HepG2 cells. HSPH1 is essential for acrylamide-induced apoptosis and autophagy of mouse spermatogonial stem cells.

Acrylamide (ACR) is an organic compound widely used in daily life, and has been reported to cause damage to male reproductive system, while its role and mechanism in affecting the function of spermatogonial stem cells remains unknown. In this study, we showed that ACR induced apoptosis and autophagy of spermatogonial stem cell line (C18-4 cells), which was accompanied with upregulation of HSPH1. HSPH1 was subsequently shown to be involved in ACR-induced apoptosis and autophagy of C18-4 cells. In addition, Transcription factor Sp2 was identified to promote transcription of Hsph1 gene through bi

Dietary Acrylamide: A Detailed Review on Formation, Detection, Mitigation, and Its Health Impacts.

In today's fast-paced world, people increasingly rely on a variety of processed foods due to their busy lifestyles. The enhanced flavors, vibrant colors, and ease of accessibility at reasonable prices have made ready-to-eat foods the easiest and simplest choice to satiate hunger, especially those that undergo thermal processing. However, these foods often contain an unsaturated amide called 'Acrylamide', known by its chemical name 2-propenamide, which is a contaminant formed when a carbohydrate- or protein-rich food product is thermally processed at more than 120 °C through methods like frying

Estimation of the Dietary Acrylamide Exposure of the Turkish Population: An Emerging Threat for Human Health.

Acrylamide is a contaminant formed during heat treatment that poses potential health risks and occurs naturally in foods. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate exposure from the consumption of foods containing acrylamide since dietary exposure continues throughout life. In this study, the acrylamide exposure level of people living in Türkiye is estimated. Consumption of a total of 28 foods in 9 different food groups was calculated using a deterministic model under two different scenarios. The exposure levels were evaluated in terms of carcinogenic, non-carcinogenic and neurotoxic health risks.

Quercetin Alleviates Acrylamide-Induced Liver Injury by Inhibiting Autophagy-Dependent Ferroptosis.

Acrylamide (ACR) generated in carbohydrate-rich foods during thermal processing has been demonstrated to exhibit hepatotoxicity. As one of the most consumed flavonoids with diet, quercetin (QCT) possesses the ability to protect against ACR-induced toxicity, albeit its mechanism is unclear. Herein, we discovered that QCT alleviated ACR-induced elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), AST, and ALT in mice. RNA-seq analysis revealed that QCT reversed the ferroptosis signaling pathway upregulated by ACR. Subsequently, experiments indicated that QCT inhibited ACR-induced ferroptosis throug

Chemical, Pharmacological, and Structural Characterization of Novel Acrylamide-Derived Modulators of the GABAA Receptor.

Acrylamide-derived compounds have been previously shown to act as modulators of members of the Cys-loop transmitter-gated ion channel family, including the mammalian GABAA receptor. Here we have synthesized and functionally characterized the GABAergic effects of a series of novel compounds (termed "DM compounds") derived from the previously characterized GABAA and the nicotinic α7 receptor modulator (E)-3-furan-2-yl-N-p-tolyl-acrylamide (PAM-2). Fluorescence imaging studies indicated that the DM compounds increase apparent affinity to the transmitter by up to 80-fold in the ternary αβγ GABAA r

Acrylamide induces human chondrocyte cell death by initiating autophagy‑dependent ferroptosis.

Acrylamide (ACR) is formed during heat treatment of foodstuffs and ACR may serve as a probable malignant neoplastic disease agent in all organs and tissues of the human body. However, it is unknown if ACR is associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) pathogenesis. Cell viability and proliferation were determined using CCK-8 assay and EdU staining. Flow cytometry was used to determine cell death and cell cycle arrest. Intracellular lipid reactive oxygen species, Fe2+ and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were analyzed using a C11-BODIPY581/591 fluorescent probe, FerroOrange staining and a

Industrial Strategies to Reduce Acrylamide Formation in Californian-Style Green Ripe Olives.

Acrylamide, a compound identified as a probable carcinogen, is generated during the sterilization phase employed during the processing of Californian-style green ripe olives. It is possible to reduce the content of this toxic compound by applying different strategies during the processing of green ripe olives. The influence of different processing conditions on acrylamide content was studied in three olives varieties ("Manzanilla de Sevilla", "Hojiblanca", and "Manzanilla Cacereña"). Olives harvested during the yellow-green stage presented higher acrylamide concentrations than green olives. A

A prospective cohort study on dietary acrylamide intake and the risk for cutaneous malignant melanoma.

Epidemiological studies have shown inconsistent associations between dietary acrylamide exposure and the risk for various malignancies. This is the first epidemiological study on the association between acrylamide intake and the risk for cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM). A case-cohort analysis was carried out within the prospective Netherlands Cohort Study on diet and cancer. Acrylamide intake was estimated from a food frequency questionnaire combined with acrylamide data for Dutch foods. After 17.3 years of follow-up, 501 microscopically confirmed cases of CMM were identified. There was an

Risk assessment, formation, and mitigation of dietary acrylamide: current status and future prospects.

Acrylamide (AA) was firstly detected in food in 2002, and since then, studies on AA analysis, occurrence, formation, toxicity, risk assessment and mitigation have been extensively carried out, which have greatly advanced understanding of this particular biohazard at both academic and industrial levels. There is considerable variation in the levels of AA in different foods and different brands of the same food; therefore, so far, a general upper limit for AA in food is not available. In addition, the link of dietary AA to human cancer is still under debate, although AA has been known as a poten

Mutagenic activity of acrylamide in the rat thyroid cells under conditions of a subacute experiment.

Experimental mutagenic effect of acrylamide on thyroid gland cells was studied by an extended micronucleus test. Acrylamide in doses corresponding to 0.004-0.1 LD(50) increased the incidence of thyroid follicular cells (A-cells) with micronuclei and other karyological parameters in exposed rats after hemithyroidectomy. This cytogenetic effect allows regarding acrylamide as a mutagen for the thyroid gland and as a carcinogen for this organ.

The carcinogenicity of dietary acrylamide intake: a comparative discussion of epidemiological and experimental animal research.

Since 2002, it is known that the probable human carcinogen acrylamide is present in commonly consumed carbohydrate-rich foods, such as French fries and potato chips. In this review, the authors discuss the body of evidence on acrylamide carcinogenicity from both epidemiological and rodent studies, including variability, strengths and weaknesses, how both types of evidence relate, and possible reasons for discrepancies. In both rats and humans, increased incidences of various cancer types were observed. In rats, increased incidences of mammary gland, thyroid tumors and scrotal mesothelioma were
