STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep disturbances are common in patients with traumatic brain injury. Actigraphy can provide an objective and naturalistic assessment of sleep patterns in patients with traumatic brain injury. Yet, the evidence of objective sleep-wake abnormalities using actigraphy in this clinical population remained unclear. To explore whether there might be differences in actigraphy-based sleep measures between patients with traumatic brain injury and controls.
METHODS: An electronic systematic literature search was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycINFO, f

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To examine the associations between sleep duration, continuity, timing, and mortality using actigraphy among adults.
METHODS: Data were from a cohort of 88 282 adults (40-69 years) in UK Biobank that wore a wrist-worn triaxial accelerometer for 7 days. Actigraphy data were processed to generate estimates of sleep duration and other sleep characteristics including wake after sleep onset (WASO), number of 5-minute awakenings, and midpoint for sleep onset/wake-up and the least active 5 hours (L5). Data were linked to mortality outcomes with follow-up to October 31, 2021. We imp

Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN), are severe psychological disorders that affect individuals' eating behaviours and body perception. Previous research has shown that people with EDs often report poorer sleep. Some literature has suggested that it is mood dysregulation that mediates the link between EDs and sleep. However, the majority of previous studies only focused on females, while male ED patients have been overlooked. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the relationships between EDs, mood, and sleep among male ED patients. Using a mixture of actigraphy

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Research evaluating the influence of rapid eye movement suppressing antidepressants (REMS-AD) on multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) results and the value of performing actigraphy prior to this test in children and adolescents is lacking. We examined the impact of REMS-AD and actigraphy parameters on mean sleep latency (MSL) and sleep-onset REM episodes (SOREMs) on MSLT in a pediatric clinical sample.
METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review at a quarternary referral center. We identified 164 MSLTs conducted in patients aged less than 18 years between 2014 and 2017. Cor

Periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS) are repetitive, stereotyped movements that can disrupt sleep and result in insomnia, non-restorative sleep, and/or daytime sleepiness. Currently, polysomnography is the gold standard and only clinically acceptable means of quantifying PLMS. Leg-worn actigraphy is an alternative method of measuring PLMS, which may circumvent many of the economic and technical limitations of polysomnography to quantify nocturnal leg movements. However, the use of leg actigraphy as a diagnostic means of assessing PLMS has not been systematically evaluated. In this review, t

The aim of this study was to compare the results of the day-to-day self-evaluation of sleep quality by sleep logs with Parkinson's disease sleep scale (PDSS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Actigraphy was used as an independent analysis of nighttime activity interfering with sleep. A total of 71 idiopathic PD patients and 21 age- and sex-matched normal individuals lacking any type of sleep disturbance were recruited. Sleep was evaluated by PDSS, 7-d sleep log and actigraphy. Sleep logs and PDSS showed reduced sleep quality and daytime somnolence scores in moderate/severe PD patients as c

Sleep abnormalities and circadian rhythm disruptions are frequently observed in psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. However, most previous studies have examined circadian rhythms and sleep separately, limiting understanding of how these processes interact within individuals. This study examined circadian and sleep characteristics in depression and schizophrenia compared with healthy controls using multi-day wrist actigraphy. Circadian rhythms were assessed using parametric and non-parametric measures of rest-activity patterns, and sleep metrics were derived using a vali

PURPOSE: While accurate sleep measurement is vital for older adults, the validity of actigraphy in free-living environments remains controversial, particularly given the flexible sleep-wake schedules common in this demographic. To address this uncertainty, we assessed the accuracy of wrist actigraphy against in-home portable electroencephalography (EEG) among community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS: Relatively healthy community-dwelling older adults underwent concurrent sleep monitoring using a portable EEG device and a wrist-worn actigraphy for five consecutive nights whenever possible, wit

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the correlations between sleep and circadian rhythm measures and the metabolic syndrome (MetS) components in remitted patients with bipolar disorder (BD).
METHOD: Euthymic patients with BD (n = 67) were recorded by 3 weeks with actigraphy. We used nonparametric correlations to study the links between the MetS parameters, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), sleep efficacy, sleep latency, fragmentation index, and phase and amplitude of rhythms. We performed multivariable analyses to take into account potential confounding factors such as sleep apnea risk, antipsych

Sleep diary and actigraphy assessments of insomnia symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) are often discrepant. We examined whether opioid dose and age interact in predicting magnitude or direction of discrepancies. Participants (N = 199, M = 51.5 years, SD = 11.7) with FM and insomnia completed 14 days of diaries and actigraphy. Multiple regressions determined whether average opioid dose and its interaction with age predicted magnitude or direction of diary/actigraphy discrepancies in sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO) and sleep efficiency (SE), controlling for sex,

BACKGROUND: Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) or sleeping sickness leads to a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome with characteristic sleep alterations. Current division into a first, hemolymphatic stage and second, meningoencephalitic stage is primarily based on the detection of white blood cells and/or trypanosomes in the cerebrospinal fluid. The validity of this criterion is, however, debated, and novel laboratory biomarkers are under study. Objective clinical HAT evaluation and monitoring is therefore needed. Polysomnography has effectively documented sleep-wake disturbances during HAT, bu

Isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) is an early stage of alpha-synucleinopathies, such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Actigraphy is a promising tool for assessing rest-activity patterns, however its diagnostic or predictive value in these disorders is understudied. This study evaluated AI-based models applied to actigraphy data to improve the detection of PD and RBD, additionally exploring their capability to capture early neurodegenerative patterns in isolated RBD. We trained and evaluated machine learning models with extracted actigraphy features, a convolutional n

Endometriosis is a common chronic condition associated with debilitating pain and fatigue. Wearable technology has the potential to improve symptom monitoring in endometriosis where symptom severity has been traditionally evaluated through retrospectively-completed questionnaires. We analyzed longitudinal actigraphy data from 56 endometriosis patients across a maximum of three 4-6-week "cycles" (74.0 +/- 27.0 days per patient), of whom 46 had sufficient data for validation (>20 days), to predict fatigue scores (Brief Fatigue Inventory, ranging from 0-10) using hierarchical Bayesian regression.
