Wheelchair-Mounted Upper Limb Robotic Exoskeleton with Adaptive Controller for Activities of Daily Living.

Neuro-muscular disorders and diseases such as cerebral palsy and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy can severely limit a person's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL). Exoskeletons can provide an active or passive support solution to assist these groups of people to perform ADL. This study presents an artificial neural network-trained adaptive controller mechanism that uses surface electromyography (sEMG) signals from the human forearm to detect hand gestures and navigate an in-house-built wheelchair-mounted upper limb robotic exoskeleton based on the user's intent while ensuring safet

Muscle mass, strength, and physical performance predicting activities of daily living: a meta-analysis.

Background Activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) are essential for independent living and are predictors of morbidity and mortality in older populations. Older adults who are dependent in ADLs and IADLs are also more likely to have poor muscle measures defined as low muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance, which further limit their ability to perform activities. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine if muscle measures are predictive of ADL and IADL in older populations. Methods A systematic search wa

Relationship Between Grip and Pinch Strength and Activities of Daily Living in Stroke Patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between grip and pinch strength and independence in activities of daily living (ADL) in stroke patients. METHODS: Medical records of 577 stroke patients from January 2010 to February 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients' grip and pinch strength of both hemiplegic and non-hemiplegic hands and the Korean version of Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI) score were collected. These patients were divided into three groups: group A (onset duration: ≤3 months), group B (onset duration: >3 months and <2 years), and group C (onset duration: ≥2 years). The co

Rheumatoid arthritis: hand function, activities of daily living, grip strength and essential assistive devices.

UNLABELLED: Persons with rheumatoid arthritis use assistive devices to enable them, in spite of impaired hand dexterity and grip strength, to manage Activities of Daily Living (ADL). The aim of the research was to lay the foundation for a list of essential assistive devices through determining which assistive devices for ADL were most often used and requested, investigating whether there was a correlation between grip strength and the number of assistive devices, duration of disease, degree of difficulty in performing ADL and by investigating whether there was a correlation between difficulty

Exploratory study of predictors of decreased ability to perform activities of daily living in people living with hand osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: People with hand osteoarthritis (OA) report decreased ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL). However, few are referred to occupational therapy by their general practitioner. This study aimed to identify clinical predictors of decreased ADL ability in people with hand OA as markers of the need for referral to occupational therapy. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted as an independent add-on to a randomized controlled trial of adults with hand OA (the COLOR trial). Measures of self-reported (ADL Interview) and observed (Assessment of Motor and Process Skills)

Body mass index and activities of daily living impairment: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Both underweight and obesity have been linked to increased risk of disability, yet evidence on the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and activities of daily living (ADL) impairment remains inconsistent. To examine these associations in adults, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis following the standard methods and reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Six databases were searched from inception to August 12, 2024. The protocol is registered in the PROSPERO (CRD42022357046). Abstracts and f

Understanding Energy Expenditure: An Approach to Improving Activities of Daily Living in Huntington's Disease.

Background/Objective: Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and psychiatric symptoms. As the disease progresses, weight loss, cachexia, and musculoskeletal atrophy are common, reducing quality of life, decreasing their autonomy in their activities of daily living (ADLs), and increasing morbidity and mortality risk. To describe and compare energy expenditure (EE) during ADLs and resting conditions in individuals with HD and healthy controls, and to examine its associations with quality of life, cog

Prodromal Alzheimer's disease can affect activities of daily living for adults with Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) affecting adults with Down syndrome (DS-AD), like late-onset AD (LOAD) in the neurotypical population, has preclinical, prodromal, and more advanced stages. Only tasks placing high demands on cognition are expected to be affected during the prodromal stage, with activities of daily living (ADLs) typically being spared. However, cognitive demands of ADLs could be high for adults with DS and may be affected during prodromal DS-AD. METHODS: Cognitively stable cases that subsequently developed prodromal DS-AD were identified within a set of archived data fro

Functional Capacity and Difficulties in Activities of Daily Living From a Cross-National Perspective.

Objectives: This study investigated whether physical and cognitive functioning predicts developing difficulties in basic or instrumental activities of daily living (ADL/IADL), and whether country-level factors moderated the associations. Methods: 69,227 adults aged 50+ from 19 countries were followed for up to 14 years. Cox regression and meta-regression analyses were used. Results: Higher grip strength was associated with a 45% lower risk of developing ADL limitations and a 47% lower risk of IADL limitations. The corresponding values were 22% and 23% for peak flow, 20% and 23% for word recall

New applications for independent activities of daily living in measuring disability in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Disability outcome measures in multiple sclerosis (MS) focus heavily on ambulation; however, limitations in performing everyday activities encompass another type of disability. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the ability of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scale to discriminate between different levels of disability and to predict disability progression. METHODS: The North American Research Committee on Multiple Sclerosis (NARCOMS) registry fall 2006 semi-annual survey asked participants to complete the RAND-12, Performance Scales, Patient Determine

Perceived difficulty in activities of daily living and survival in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis.

PURPOSE: Most patients receiving hemodialysis have perceived difficulty in mobility tasks, such as basic activities of daily living (ADL), ambulation, and walking up or down stairs, even if they can ambulate independently. Perceived difficulty in performing ADL (ADL difficulty) is reportedly a useful predictor of mortality in older community-dwelling people. However, very few studies have examined the association of ADL difficulty with clinical outcomes in patients receiving hemodialysis. This study aimed to identify the association between ADL difficulty related to mobility tasks of lower lim
