Systemic cell cycle activation is induced following complex tissue injury in axolotl.

Activation of progenitor cells is crucial to promote tissue repair following injury in adult animals. In the context of successful limb regeneration following amputation, progenitor cells residing within the stump must re-enter the cell cycle to promote regrowth of the missing limb. We demonstrate that in axolotls, amputation is sufficient to induce cell-cycle activation in both the amputated limb and the intact, uninjured contralateral limb. Activated cells were found throughout all major tissue populations of the intact contralateral limb, with internal cellular populations (bone and soft ti

Analysis of muscular activity and dynamic response of the lower limb adding vibration to cycling.

Vibration in cycling has been proved to have undesirable effects over health, comfort and performance of the rider. In this study, 15 participants performed eight 6-min sub-maximal pedalling exercises at a constant power output (150W) and pedalling cadence (80 RPM) being exposed to vibration at different frequencies (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 Hz) or without vibration. Oxygen uptake (VO2), heart rate (HR), surface EMG activity of seven lower limb muscles (GMax, RF, BF, VM, GAS, SOL and TA) and 3-dimentional accelerations at ankle, knee and hip were measured during the exercises. To analyse the dyn

Activation of MAPK/ERK signaling by Burkholderia pseudomallei cycle inhibiting factor (Cif).

Cycle inhibiting factors (Cifs) are virulence proteins secreted by the type III secretion system of some Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria including Burkholderia pseudomallei. Cif is known to function to deamidate Nedd8, leading to inhibition of Cullin E3 ubiquitin ligases (CRL) and consequently induction of cell cycle arrest. Here we show that Cif can function as a potent activator of MAPK/ERK signaling without significant activation of other signaling pathways downstream of receptor tyrosine kinases. Importantly, we found that the ability of Cif to activate ERK is dependent on its deamidase

Inflammasome activation by cell volume regulation and inflammation-associated hyponatremia: A vicious cycle.

Inflammasomes are caspase-1-activating molecular platforms that produce active interleukin (IL)-1β and are implicated in various central nervous system (CNS) diseases. These multi-protein complexes can be activated by exposure of cells to low osmolality. The inflammasome nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain-like receptor pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) is hereby the main sensor of cellular osmolality. IL-1β was found to stimulate the secretion of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) from the posterior pituitary gland either by action of prostaglandins or indirectly by causing the rele

Changes in cortical activity measured with EEG during a high-intensity cycling exercise.

This study investigated the effects of a high-intensity cycling exercise on changes in spectral and temporal aspects of electroencephalography (EEG) measured from 10 experienced cyclists. Cyclists performed a maximum aerobic power test on the first testing day followed by a time-to-exhaustion trial at 85% of their maximum power output on 2 subsequent days that were separated by ∼48 h. EEG was recorded using a 64-channel system at 500 Hz. Independent component (IC) analysis parsed the EEG scalp data into maximal ICs. An equivalent current dipole model was calculated for each IC, and results wer

Effects of physical activity on pupil cycle time (PCT) in healthy Indian male.

Globally, physical inactivity is an important risk factor for the development of non-communicable disease consisting of coronary artery disease, as well as, other diseases including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancers. Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity in the eye is determined by the pupil cycle time (PCT) can be comparable with cardiac parasympathetic response and thereby determine the morbidity and mortality among individuals. The PCT is measured by throwing white light on the edge of the pupil. Pupil cycling is a feature of pupillary refle

Sex differences in stress response circuitry activation dependent on female hormonal cycle.

Understanding sex differences in stress regulation has important implications for understanding basic physiological differences in the male and female brain and their impact on vulnerability to sex differences in chronic medical disorders associated with stress response circuitry. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we demonstrated that significant sex differences in brain activity in stress response circuitry were dependent on women's menstrual cycle phase. Twelve healthy Caucasian premenopausal women were compared to a group of healthy men from the same population, based on

Increase of muscle activities in hemiplegic lower extremity during driving a cycling wheelchair.

For the patients with severe hemiplegia, long-time wheelchair sitting is unavoidable, which however increases a risk of secondary impairments due to non-use of the affected leg. A cycling wheelchair (C-W/C) has a possibility to activate paretic muscle through self-locomotion with bilateral pedaling. We therefore measured driving speed of C-W/C and electromyogram (EMG) in both legs during driving in the healthy adults and severe hemiplegic patients. Ten healthy volunteers (mean age 32.8, 26-45 years) and ten non-ambulatory post-stroke patients (mean age 69.0, 55-81 years) with complete or semi-

Lower extremity muscle activity during cycling in adolescents with and without cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: In individuals with cerebral palsy, adaptation and plasticity in the neuromuscular system can lead to detrimental changes affecting gait. Cycling may be an effective method to improve mobility. The biomechanics of cycling in adolescents with cerebral palsy have been studied, but further analysis of the frequency and amplitude characteristics of the electromyographic signals can assist with interpretation of the cycling kinematics. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 10 adolescents with typical development (mean=14.9, SD=1.4 years) and 10 adolescents with cerebral palsy (mean=15.6, SD

Atrial flutter ablation: correlation between isthmic activation times and flutter cycle.

BACKGROUND: Ablation of typical atrial flutter relies on the suppression of electrical conduction along the cavo-tricuspid isthmus. Bidirectional isthmus block is a criterion of successful ablation and is associated with the presence of different activation times on each side of the ablation line. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether the difference in isthmic activation times correlates with the length of the atrial flutter cycle. POPULATION AND METHODS: We studied 31 patients with typical atrial flutter (93.6% male, mean age 66 +/- 9 years) who underwent successful abla

Uterine peristaltic activity during the menstrual cycle: characterization, regulation, function and dysfunction.

Unlike other smooth muscle organs, the uterine muscle was regarded to be normally functional for only a brief period, following a lengthy gestation. However, recently it has been shown that uterine peristalsis constitutes one of the fundamental functions of the non-pregnant uterus. Its morphological basis is the archimyometrium, which is the muscular component of the archimetra and which preserves a functional bipartition of the primarily unpaired uterus. Three types of uterine peristaltic contractions can be distinguished: cervico-fundal, fundo-cervical and isthmical peristaltic activity, whi

Activity of the pituitary-adrenocortical system and thyroid gland during the oestrous cycle of the rat.

The concentrations of LH, progesterone, ACTH, corticosterone and thyroxine in the plasma were estimated at various times during the oestrous cycle of the rat. The well-established patterns of LH and progesterone secretion were confirmed. On each day of the cycle the plasma concentrations of ACTH and corticosterone were lowest in the morning and rose in the afternoon. Conversely, during oestrus and dioestrus, the plasma concentrations of thyroxine were higher in the morning than in the evening. However, during the afternoon of pro-oestrus the concentrations of ACTH, corticosterone and thyroxine

Monoamine oxidase activity in various parts of the rat brain during the estrous cycle.

The activity of monoamine oxidase was estimated in the hypothalamus, amygdala, and frontal cortex of adult female rats during the estrous cycle. Enzymatic activity in all three areas of brain was at its lowest during the diestrus phase of the estrous cycle and progressively increased to its highest during estrus. Throughout the estrous cycle the greatest activity of monoamine oxidase was found in the hypothalamus, as compared with the other brain areas. The significance of the activity is discussed.

Oocyte maturation inhibitor activity in human follicular fluid: quantitative determination in unstimulated and clomiphene citrate- and human menopausal gonadotropin-stimulated ovarian cycles.

Since removal of the oocyte from the intrafollicular milieu allows meiotic resumption and germinal vesical breakdown to proceed, the concept of an intrafollicular oocyte maturation inhibitor (OMI) has evolved. Accordingly, we asked the following questions: Is there OMI activity in human follicular fluid? Does OMI activity change with ovarian hyperstimulation? and Does OMI activity correlate with oocyte fertilization or the concentration of steroids in the corresponding follicular fluid? Fresh cumulus enclosed porcine oocytes from small follicles were incubated with human follicular fluid aspir

Propionate consumption activates mitochondrial activity, methylcitrate cycle and promotes changes in the cell wall of the human pathogen Histoplasma capsulatum.

Histoplasma capsulatum is the fungal causative agent of the systemic mycosis Histoplasmosis, a disease with high incidence in the Americas and with worldwide occurrence. During infection, H. capsulatum yeast cells may metabolize nutrients such as odd fatty acids and amino acids, which render propionyl-CoA, a three-carbon molecule that may be toxic in high concentrations. In fungi, propionyl-CoA metabolism occurs mainly via the methylcitrate cycle (MCC). Therefore, this work aimed to analyze the adaptation of H. capsulatum to propionate. In silico analysis indicated potential genes coding for M
