PURPOSE: To evaluate the prognostic significance of four scoring systems applied with predictive trends to myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).

A retrospective review of 149 consecutive potentially curable rectal adenocarcinomas operated on at our institution between 1965 and 1981 was carried out to assess whether tumor morphology influences long term survival. Complete follow-up was available on all patients and extended to 20 years. Data on tumor morphology was extracted from pathology reports and was available in 147 cases (98.6%). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of the presence of laryngeal edema on outcome and the other potential prognostic factors in patients with supraglottic larynx carcinoma treated with radiotherapy after partial laryngectomy.
DESIGN: A retrospective analysis.
SETTING: Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, Istanbul University.
METHODS: Seventy-nine patients with supraglottic carcinoma of the larynx were treated with radiotherapy after partial laryngectomy between January 1980 and July 2003. Neck dissection was not performed in 46 patients. The median follow-up time was 64 months.

PURPOSE: Between 1979 and 1987, 76 women with 77 ductal carcinomas in-situ of the breast were evaluated by The Radiation Oncology Center after breast conservation surgery.

PURPOSE: The roles of postoperative pelvic and prophylactic paraaortic irradiation in pelvic node positive cervical cancer are currently controversial. A retrospective study was undertaken to examine the effect of pelvic irradiation on pelvic control and survival and to analyze the patterns of recurrence to determine whether indications exist for prophylactic paraaortic irradiation.

Over 11 years, 91 patients with isolated mitral stenosis underwent open mitral commissurotomy. Twenty-nine were 50 or more years old; 15 had had prior commissurotomies. Between October 1983 and August 1991, 29 consecutive Damus-Stansel-Kaye procedures were performed. Thirty-three bronchial carcinoid tumours operated on in a 22-year period are reviewed. They were histologically verified as typical carcinoids with Grimelius' argryophilic staining (25 cases), electron microscopy (6) and immunostaining for synaptophysin (4). Low-dose cyclosporine (CsA) plus prednisone for induction and maintenance immunosuppression were used in 106 consecutive cadaveric renal transplants. From 1975 to 1984, 894 patients with gastric cancer were operated on in the Department of Surgery at Kurume University School of Medicine. Patients who currently benefit the most from liver transplantation are those with end-stage, non-malignant liver disease. Primary biliary cirrhosis and cirrhosis from chronic active hepatitis (hepatitis B negative) have been the most common indications in our experience.
