[Status of the nervous system in victims of the accident at the Chernobyl atomic power plant].

Under neurological investigation were 113 patients with different degrees of severity of acute radiation disease (ARD). The patients were relatively evenly irradiated by beta- and gamma-rays as a result of CPP accident. The onset time and markedness of the signs of primary reaction were related to ARD severity. Early appearance of the signs of disturbances in the central nervous system functional state suggested a stronger affliction, malignant course and fatal outcome of the disease. Ii ARD patients with IV-th and III-rd degree of severity the syndromes observed were these: acute radiation en

Acute radiation enteritis caused by dose-dependent radiation exposure in dogs: experimental research.

Accidental or intended radiation exposure in mass casualty settings presents a serious and on-going threat. The development of mitigating and treating agents requires appropriate animal models. Unfortunately, the majority of research on radiation enteritis in animals has lacked specific assessments and targeted therapy. Our study showed beagle dogs, treated by intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for abdominal irradiation, were administered single X-ray doses of 8-30 Gy. The degree of intestinal tract injury for all of the animals after radiation exposure was evaluated with regard to c

[Acute radiation effects in victims of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station].

Observation made over 115 patients with acute radiation sickness due to exposure to external gamma- and beta-rays confirmed high efficiency of the earlier proposed principles of prognostication of the degree of severity by clinical manifestations of the primary disease response and those of separate syndromes, using the methods of hematological and cytogenetic analyses. Out of 115 victims, 56 persons had radiation burns (RB), 17--intestinal syndrome (IS), 80--oropharyngeal syndrome (ORS), 7--interstitial radiation pneumonitis (IRP). In thanatogenesis, of prime importance were: RB (more than 40

Pathology of acute sub-lethal or near-lethal irradiation of nonhuman primates prophylaxed with the nutraceutical, gamma tocotrienol.

Exposure to high, marginally lethal doses or higher of ionizing radiation, either intentional or accidental, results in injury to various organs. Currently, there is only a limited number of safe and effective radiation countermeasures approved by US Food and Drug Administration for such injuries. These approved agents are effective for only the hematopoietic component of the acute radiation syndrome and must be administered only after the exposure event: currently, there is no FDA-approved agent that can be used prophylactically. The nutraceutical, gamma-tocotrienol (GT3) has been found to be

[Uncommon dermatologic disorders triggered by radiation therapy of breast cancer: A case-series].

Radiotherapy's main skin toxicities are now well-separated, acute (acute radiation dermatitis) or chronic complications (chronic radiation dermatitis, induced cutaneous carcinoma, aesthetic sequelae). Exceptionally, radiotherapy may induce, by isomorphic reaction or Koebner's phenomenon, some specific dermatosis. In this article, we report five new observations of these unusual complications of radiation therapy, occurring in very variable time after breast irradiation and remaining strictly localized in the irradiated field (cutaneous mastocytosis, Sweet syndrome, lichen planus, vitiligo). Multicenter, randomized trial of quantitative pretest probability to reduce unnecessary medical radiation exposure in emergency department patients with chest pain and dyspnea.

BACKGROUND: Use of pretest probability can reduce unnecessary testing. We hypothesize that quantitative pretest probability, linked to evidence-based management strategies, can reduce unnecessary radiation exposure and cost in low-risk patients with symptoms suggestive of acute coronary syndrome and pulmonary embolism. METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a prospective, 4-center, randomized controlled trial of decision support effectiveness. Subjects were adults with chest pain and dyspnea, nondiagnostic ECGs, and no obvious diagnosis. The clinician provided data needed to compute pretest probabilit

Anticarcinogenic effect of tetrachlorodecaoxide after total-body gamma irradiation in rats.

Tetrachlorodecaoxygen (TCDO) therapy of acute radiation syndrome was tested for a possible influence on the development of X-ray-induced malignancies. BD IX rats were exposed to total-body irradiation (TBI, gamma rays, 9 or 11 Gy) and received daily intravenous injections of either TCDO or physiological saline solution from days 4 through 11 after TBI. The short-term TCDO therapy reduced the acute death rate markedly, but survival rates after 4 months were similar with and without TCDO. The first malignancy after TBI occurred on day 103, and over the lifetime of the animals the tumor incidence

Alpha-blockers for the treatment of prostatitis-like syndromes.

Prostatitis is a common medical diagnosis. The etiology of this symptomatic syndrome can be an acute or chronic bacterial infection, a noninfectious initiator (the most common cause), or iatrogenic heat or radiation; the syndrome may coexist with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Alpha-blockers have a role in the treatment of the prostatitis syndromes. In Category I, acute bacterial prostatitis, alpha-blockers have been shown to possibly ameliorate obstructive and irritative voiding symptoms. In Category II, chronic bacterial prostatitis, alpha-blockers seem to reduce the risk of clinical and bact

[Radioprotective properties of indralin combined with cystamine and mexamine].

The study of indralin radioprotective properties at its joint application with cystamine and mexamine was carried out in the experiments on inbred mice and rats. The mice and rats were exposed to whole-body y-irradiation at a dose of 9.0 and 9.5 Gy, correspondingly. A combined parenteral administration ofindralin and cystamine at a dose of 25 mg/kg showed ponentiaton of indralin radioprotective properties up to a level of the ED50 effect versus the absence of or a weak radioprotective effect in the case of their separate application. In the experiments on rats, indralin (50 mg/kg) and mexamine

An Experimental Model of Proton-Beam-Induced Radiation Dermatitis In Vivo.

Radiation dermatitis (RD) is one of the most common side effects of radiation therapy. However, to date, there is a lack of both specific treatments for RD and validated experimental animal models with the use of various sources of ionizing radiation (IR) applied in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a model of acute RD induced using proton radiation in mice. Acute RD (Grade 2-4) was obtained with doses of 30, 40, and 50 Gy, either with or without depilation. The developed model of RD was characterized by typical histological changes in the skin after irradiat

Orally Administered Fructose Increases the Numbers of Peripheral Lymphocytes Reduced by Exposure of Mice to Gamma or SPE-like Proton Radiation.

Exposure of the whole body or a major portion of the body to ionizing radiation can result in Acute Radiation Sickness (ARS), which can cause symptoms that range from mild to severe, and include death. One of the syndromes that can occur during ARS is the hematopoietic syndrome, which is characterized by a reduction in bone marrow cells as well as the number of circulating blood cells. Doses capable of causing this syndrome can result from conventional radiation therapy and accidental exposure to ionizing radiation. It is of concern that this syndrome could also occur during space exploration

CLINICAL TRIAGE OF RADIATION CASUALTIES-THE HEMATOLOGICAL MODULE OF THE BUNDESWEHR INSTITUTE OF RADIOBIOLOGY.

Novel treatment regimens for therapy of the acute radiation syndrome (ARS) were developed over the last years. Their application relies on an early and high-throughput diagnosis. Based on the database SEARCH a new scientific triage tool (called H-module) was developed for early prediction of the later developing ARS. Based on peripheral blood cell counts measured within the first three days after a radiation exposure a prediction of the H-ARS severity (as well as therapeutic recommendations) can be performed with this tool. The H-module was tested within two table top exercises. Contributors w

Future Perspectives of Wharton's Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells and their Soluble Factors in Radioprotection.

Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) is also known as triple syndrome, which develops after whole-body radiation exposure. During unforeseen exposures, these syndromes are set in depending on the dose of radiation. Cell-based therapy, especially using stem cells and their soluble factors, is gaining wide attention in the field of regenerative medicine to treat various diseases, including degenerative diseases. Stem cells attract prime attention because of their profound inherent tissue repair capability and regeneration potential. Further, stem cell therapy can be one of the promising strategies for

Clinical impact of predictive assays for acute and late radiation morbidity.

BACKGROUND: Clinically reliable predictive assays for normal tissue radiation sensitivity would help to avoid severe radiation induced morbidity and result in individualized dose prescriptions. Profound differences of individual fibroblast and lymphocyte radiation sensitivity in vitro have been documented in patients with certain genetic syndromes but also in patients without known genetic disorders. The following review evaluates whether fibroblast or lymphocyte radiation sensitivity measured in vitro correlates with the degree of acute and late radiation induced morbidity. RESULTS: Acute ra

The Ability of the Nitric Oxide Synthases Inhibitor T1023 to Selectively Protect the Non-Malignant Tissues.

Previously, we showed that a nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, compound T1023, induces transient hypoxia and prevents acute radiation syndrome (ARS) in mice. Significant efficacy (according to various tests, dose modifying factor (DMF)-1.6-1.9 against H-ARS/G-ARS) and safety in radioprotective doses (1/5-1/4 LD10) became the reason for testing its ability to prevent complications of tumor radiation therapy (RT). Research methods included studying T1023 effects on skin acute radiation reactions (RSR) in rats and mice without tumors and in tumor-bearing animals. The effects were evaluated u

Cardiac and Renal Delayed Effects of Acute Radiation Exposure: Organ Differences in Vasculopathy, Inflammation, Senescence and Oxidative Balance.

We have previously shown significant pathology in the heart and kidney of murine hematopoietic-acute radiation syndrome (H-ARS) survivors of 8.7-9.0 Gy total-body irradiation (TBI). The goal of this study was to determine temporal relationships in the development of vasculopathy and the progression of renal and cardiovascular delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) at TBI doses less than 9 Gy and to elucidate the potential roles of senescence, inflammation and oxidative stress. Our results show significant loss of endothelial cells in coronary arteries by 4 months post-TBI (8.53 or
