Perioperative pain and addiction interdisciplinary network (PAIN): protocol for the perioperative management of cannabis and cannabinoid-based medicines using a modified Delphi process.

INTRODUCTION: At the conception of this study (January 2019), a literature search by the authors found no evidence-based or consensus perioperative guidelines for patients consuming cannabis products, or for those patients in whom a cannabinoid medication could be considered for perioperative treatment. Currently, there is a large global population that consumes cannabis. The availability of cannabis has also increased this decade with greater legal access to cannabis products in some countries such as USA, Canada, Uruguay, Israel, Australia and Germany. There are recognised possible therapeut

Improving screening rates for sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections among patients initiating care in a low-barrier addiction medicine clinic: a quality improvement project.

Despite a high prevalence of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) among patients with substance use disorders, screening rates in addiction medicine settings are often low. At baseline in our addiction clinic, only 65% of patients were offered screening and only 6% completed screening blood work. This quality improvement project aimed to improve the rate of STBBI screening among new intakes in our clinic by 50%.Interventions included the creation of clinic screening guidelines to include annual screening for all patients for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, gonorrhoea and

Clinical characteristics and prognostic factors among hospitalized patients with substance use disorders: Findings from a retrospective cohort study of a Canadian inpatient addiction medicine service.

INTRODUCTION: Inpatient addiction medicine services (AMS) were developed in response to the growing needs of hospitalized individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs). AMS aim to enable timely initiation of pharmacologic treatment, build hospital capacity to support patients who use substances, and facilitate transition to community services. As an emerging service being adopted in hospitals across North America, the model of care, populations served, substance use trends, and clinical trajectory has not been widely described. This work aims to characterize patients accessing care through t

COVID-19 and Substance Use Disorders: Recommendations to a Comprehensive Healthcare Response. An International Society of Addiction Medicine Practice and Policy Interest Group Position Paper.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is escalating all over the world and has higher morbidities and mortalities in certain vulnerable populations. People Who Use Drugs (PWUD) are a marginalized and stigmatized group with weaker immunity responses, vulnerability to stress, poor health conditions, high-risk behaviors, and lower access to health care services. These conditions put them at a higher risk of COVID-19 infection and its complications. In this paper, an international group of experts on addiction medicine, infectious diseases, and disaster psychiatry explore the possible raised concern

Interest in genetic counseling and testing for adolescent nicotine addiction susceptibility among a sample of adolescent medicine providers attending a scientific conference on adolescent health.

PURPOSE: Preventing adolescents from smoking and becoming addicted to nicotine is an important public health issue. New research on the genetics of susceptibility to nicotine addition is emerging and may eventually help to identify adolescents at high risk. Over time, genetic counseling and testing for nicotine addiction susceptibility may become incorporated into tobacco control practice, and providers in primary care settings are likely to be at the forefront of these services. As such, it is important to understand the attitudes and practices of adolescent medicine providers toward tobacco

Analgesic, Anesthetic, and Addiction Clinical Trial Translations, Innovations, Opportunities, and Networks-American Pain Society-American Academy of Pain Medicine Pain Taxonomy Diagnostic Criteria for Acute Needle Pain.

Needle procedures are among the most common causes of pain and distress for individuals seeking health care. While needle pain is especially problematic for children needle pain and associated fear also has significant impact on adults and can lead to avoidance of appropriate medical care. Currently there is not a standard definition of needle pain. A taxonomy, or classification system, for acute needle pain would aid research efforts and enhance clinical care. To meet this need, the Analgesic, Anesthetic, and Addiction Clinical Trial Translations, Innovations, Opportunities, and Networks publ

An AUDacious Proposal: How to Improve Gastroenterology Fellow Training for Alcohol Use Disorder and Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD), an increasingly prevalent and treatable cause for alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), is the most common reason for liver transplantation and liver-related deaths in the United States. Despite overwhelming evidence that ALD-related mortality and healthcare costs are rising, patients with ALD are generally undertreated for AUD. Though multidisciplinary care models integrating addiction medicine, hepatology, and social workers, with established training for health professionals on ALD-related stigma can address this treatment gap, numerous barriers exist, which in

[Addiction: what's new in 2023].

Addiction medicine is currently facing new challenges, such as drug epidemics and open drug scenes. It is responding to these challenges with a range of innovations: 1. The commercialization of opioid-assisted treatment (OAT) is a major step forward. 2. In Geneva, a community outreach project involving mental health peer practitioners targets the emerging crack scene, demonstrating its effectiveness in directing this marginalized population towards care. 3. In Switzerland, two projects in French-speaking Switzerland are testing hybrid models of cannabis regulation. Evaluation of these projects

Defining problematic pharmaceutical opioid use among people prescribed opioids for chronic noncancer pain: do different measures identify the same patients?

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) are routinely used in diagnosing illicit substance use disorders, but for people taking prescribed opioids they remain controversial. In pain medicine, the concept of "Addiction" is preferred with reduced emphasis on tolerance and withdrawal. This article examines the prevalence and characteristics of pharmaceutical opioid dependence/disorder according to ICD, DSM, and the pain medicine concept of "Addiction," among chronic noncancer pain (CNCP) patients prescribed opioids. In the current study,

[Recommendations for the prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of addiction in the elderly].

In old age, the chronic use of substances such as alcohol and sedatives, and more recently opioids, is a major public health and personal problem. Despite this, relatively little attention has been paid to the disorders associated with the use of these substances. These recommendations have been formulated by the Swiss Society for Elderly Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (SPPA) in collaboration with the Swiss Nurses' Association (SNA) and the Swiss Society for Addiction Medicine (SSAM). They provide a summary of the knowledge about addiction disorders in old age for the benefit of those working wi
