Background and Objectives: Adenoidectomy is a common pediatric procedure performed and endoscopic, instrumented techniques such as a powered microdebrider and coblation aim to improve visualization and completeness of resection while potentially reducing pain, bleeding and recurrence compared with blind curettage. To compare clinical outcomes and safety of endoscopic-assisted adenoidectomy using a microdebrider versus coblation in pediatric patients. Materials and Methods: This retrospective comparative cohort study included 50 children who underwent endoscopic-assisted adenoidectomy using eit

Among the most common causes of nasal congestion in childhood is adenoid hypertrophy (AH) which leads to hypoxia. In this study, we studied plasma concentrations of hypoxia induced factor-1α (HIF-1α) in children undergoing adenoidectomy. The study included a total of 86 participants: 39 patients with AH and 47 healthy individuals. Serum HIF-1α levels (ng/mL) were measured by ELISA. HIF-1α concentrations were compared to the adenoid-nasopharyngeal ratio (ANR) of patients with AH, as recorded in the medical records. We found significantly higher concentrations of HIF-1α (0.30 ± 0.47 ng/mL) in p

BACKGROUND: Adenoidectomy is often carried out in children for conditions such as nasal obstruction, otitis media with effusion, and obstructive sleep apnoea. Traditionally, it is performed as a blind procedure with a St Clair Thomson curette. An acceptable alternative technique is suction diathermy adenoidectomy. This study aimed to ensure that the complication rate of this latter technique was within published rates and national guidelines.
METHOD: A retrospective case note review was conducted, and information regarding surgery, indications and complications was collected.
RESULTS: Post-o

Ocular complications of adenotonsillectomy are rare. The authors describe a 6-year-old boy who developed mydrasis and limitations of supraduction and infraduction after adenotonsillectomy. This was attributed to the hemorrhagic compression of the nerve in the cavernous sinus. This is the first report of pupil-involving oculomotor nerve palsy following adenotonsillectomy. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2019;56:e76-e78.].

OBJECTIVE: One of the most frequent reasons of nasal obstruction and sleep apnea in pediatrics is adenoid hypertrophy. Remaining adenoid tissue can reoccur following hypertrophied adenoid removal and a second operation may be needed. Nasal corticosteroids are utilized in order to reduce adenoid hypertrophy and eliminate adenoidectomy operation. The purpose of our study is to assess the effect of nasal corticosteroid administration after adenoidectomy on adenoid regrowth and symptom scores.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Seventy patients who had adenoidectomy were enrolled in our study. Patients were di

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy is a relatively safe procedure, but it is nevertheless associated with certain complications. Some of these include throat pain, otalgia, dehydration, hemorrhage, nasopharyngeal stenosis, velopharyngeal insufficiency, burns, soft-tissue injury, dentomandibular trauma, atlantoaxial subluxation, and respiratory compromise. One unusual complication is altered taste. To the best of the author's knowledge, only 29 cases of altered taste associated with palatine tonsillectomy have been previously reported in the literature since 1966. In this article, the author repor

Background: Adenoidectomy is one of the world's most frequently performed surgical procedures. Although the operation is relatively simple and with a very low percentage of complications, it can sometimes be accompanied by fatal complications. One such scenario arises when an unrecognized aberrant course of the internal carotid artery is present, particularly if the artery is near or in contact with the oropharynx or nasopharynx. Methods: This report presents the case of a 3-year-old girl scheduled for adenoidectomy and the placement of ear aeration tubes. Following intubation, the oro-nasopha

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid hypertrophy is one of the main causes of nasal obstruction in 'children. Adenoid hypertrophy can be approached either with nasal corticosteroids, or surgically when medical treatment fails. Different adenoidectomy techniques have been proposed to reduce morbidity and surgical risks, with a consequent marked increase in the use of new surgical procedures in recent years, with a progressive increase in the use of coblation. This state-of-the-art review aims to systematically review the current literature on the role of coblation in adenoidectomy.

Tonsillectomy and(or) adenoidectomy are effective procedures for children with chronic tonsillitis, diseases associated with the tonsil and other adenotonsillar diseases, and obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome. Since the tonsil and adenoid gland play a dual role in fluid and cell immunity, whether adenotonsillectomy results in the abnormal immune function in children after the surgery has always been the focus of attention. This review focuses on the alterations and impacts on immunity in children after tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy. Recent studies confirmed that in short term the

Bleeding following adenoidectomy is a rare complication of this surgical procedure, and usually occurs in the first post-operative hours. In almost all cases it is related to adenoid remnants. Removal of these remnants under a second general anaesthetic is the treatment of choice. We report a case of massive bleeding three days following adenoidectomy related to the injury of an aberrant ascending pharyngeal artery during adenoidectomy performed elsewhere. Signs of manifest shock necessitated an immediate ligature of the external carotid artery and its individual branches. The post-operative c

We conducted a prospective study of 48 children, aged 2 to 14 years, who had persistent bilateral otitis media with effusion, enlarged adenoids, and a bilateral conductive hearing loss. Half of these patients underwent adenoidectomy and the other half adenotonsillectomy. All patients were followed every 2 weeks for up to 6 months. At 2 months postoperatively, the overall success rate in terms of the resolution of middle ear effusion was 85.1%. Success rates were 82.6% in the adenoidectomy group and 87.5% in the adenotonsillectomy group; the difference was not statistically significant. Our fin
