Uterine adenomyoma: a clinicopathologic review of 26 cases and a review of the literature.

The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of diagnosing uterine adenomyoma and help in differentiating it from other sinister lesions. Adenomyoma of the uterus is a circumscribed nodular aggregate of benign endometrial glands surrounded by endometrial stroma with leiomyomatous smooth muscle bordering the endometrial stromal component. It may be located within the myometrium, or it may involve or originate in the endometrium and grow as a polyp. A retrospective analysis of 26 consecutive cases of uterine adenomyomas diagnosed in the Department of Pathology, Government Medical College

Polypoid adenomyomas: sonohysterographic and color Doppler findings with histopathologic correlation.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to describe the sonographic features of polypoid adenomyomas of the uterus and to determine the diagnostic role of sonohysterography and color Doppler sonography in the evaluation of these lesions. METHODS: The sonographic findings for 46 histologically proved cases of polypoid adenomyomas of the uterus, accumulated over 10 years, were reviewed retrospectively. The pathologic diagnoses included typical polypoid adenomyoma (n = 36), atypical polypoid adenomyoma (n = 7), and low-grade adenosarcoma arising in polypoid adenomyoma (n = 3). RESULTS: Of 46 total

Adenomyoma arising in a meckel diverticulum: case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of adenomyoma of the small intestine arising in a Meckel diverticulum. The patient was a 22-month-old boy who presented with signs and symptoms of intussusception. At surgery, a Meckel diverticulum was found and removed. On histologic examination, a tumor consisting of dilated cystic glands and smooth muscle bundles was identified. A diagnosis of adenomyoma arising in a Meckel diverticulum was made. A review of the literature showed that only six other pediatric cases of adenomyoma of the small intestine have been reported. The presence of an adenomyoma in a young patient with

Adenomyoma of the ampulla of Vater: an uncommon cause of bile duct obstruction.

Adenomyomas of the bile ducts are extremely rare. They are most likely often overlooked also when situated in the ampulla of Vater and obstructing bile flow. Of 3,131 endoscopic retrograde cholangiograms, four patients with ampullary adenomyoma and signs of biliary obstruction have been diagnosed. When recognized they can be treated effectively by endoscopic means. However, their radiologic and endoscopic appearances were found difficult to interpret and led to unnecessary endoscopic sessions in one patient and surgery in another. Thus, increased awareness of this entity is important to avoid

[Appendicular and ureteral adenomyomas. Problem of induction of the stroma in the endometriosis foci].

The authors discuss the contents and interpretation of the theories of pathogenicity of the condition of endometriosis after having defined it in its different forms and sites. Adenomyosis (internal endometriosis) and less than adenomyomata greater than (enternal endometriosis accompanied by smooth muscle hyperplasia) give rise to special problems of histogensis. The induction of fibro-muscular stroma into the area could be brought about by two different mechanisms. There is no need for ectopic endometrial glands to induce stroma in mulleriam organs. On the other hand non-mulleriam organs unde

Reproductive preservation in non-puerperal uterine inversion from adenomyoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Non-puerperal uterine inversion (NPUI) occurs extremely rarely and is typically associated with uterine tumors, but cases of NPUI arising from polypoid adenomyoma are even less common. The non-specific presentation of NPUI often leads to delayed diagnosis, and existing fertility-preserving surgeries lack tailoring to polypoid adenomyoma's features. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old nulliparous Asian woman presented with heavy menstrual bleeding, a prolapsing vaginal mass, and severe anemia (Hemoglobin 32 g/L). Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed NPUI. Surgical management involved

A Rare Presentation of Benign Vaterian Adenomyoma With High-Grade Adenomatous Dysplasia.

Benign neoplasms of the ampulla of Vater are infrequently encountered: overall adenomas account for <10% of ampullary neoplasms; adenomyomas are even rarer. This report describes the case of a 78-year-old woman who presented with epigastric pain, elevated lipase and transaminases with imaging notable for acute pancreatitis, and intrahepatic and common bile duct biliary dilatation without choledocholithiasis. A 25-mm ampullary mass was identified during esophagogastroduodenoscopy with endoscopic ultrasound. The mass was determined to be suitable for endoscopic mucosal resection, which was subse

MRI and Transvaginal Ultrasound Findings of Atypical Polypoid Adenomyoma: A Case Report.

Minimal residual disease (MRD) was investigated in 52 children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), using antigen receptor gene rearrangements and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for fusion transcripts as molecular targets. Patients [treated according to the Medical Research Council United Kingdom ALL (MRC UKALL) XI protocol or Total XI and XIII protocols] were monitored for a median period of 45 months (range, 9-110 months). Among 17 patients who relapsed, MRD persisted for longer (66.7%, 47.1%, 53.8% and 41.7% at 0-2, 3-5, 6-9, 10-24 months respectively) than patients wh

Juvenile cystic adenomyoma, a rare diagnostic challenge: Case Reports and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To report 2 very rare cases of young women who presented with severe dysmenorrhea and a large cystic lesion in the myometrium, which presented a diagnostic dilemma because they were confused with a Müllerian anomaly. DESIGN: Case reports and a literature review. SETTING: A university-based reproductive endocrinology and infertility clinic in the United States. PATIENTS: An 18- and a 16-year-old nulliparous girl presented with worsening of their longstanding pelvic pain, and imaging study results were suggestive of a Müllerian anomaly. INTERVENTIONS: Abdominal and pelvic computed

Immunohistochemical characteristics of atypical polypoid adenomyoma with special reference to h-caldesmon.

Atypical polypoid adenomyoma (APA) is a relatively rare benign uterine tumor, histologically characterized by proliferation of irregular endometrioid glands accompanied by stromal cells of smooth muscle origin. As the epithelial components of APA usually show cytological atypia, a differential diagnosis between this tumor and endometrioid carcinoma invading myometrium is often difficult, especially in curettage material. This distinction is clinically very important to avoid unnecessary hysterectomy. However, only a few immunohistochemical studies of APA that differentiate it from malignancy h

Coexistent atypical polypoid adenomyoma and complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia in the uterus.

We report a case of atypical polypoid adenomyoma (APA) concomitantly identified with complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia (CAH) in the uterus. Since an initial endometrial smear revealed atypical endometrial cells, a diagnosis of CAH was made. Even though a concomitantly performed uterine cervical smear contained both atypical epithelial and stromal cells, the diagnosis of APA was not initially made because the cytological criteria for APA had not been established. Histologically, we recognized both CAH in the uterine corpus and APA in the lower uterine segment in the hysterectomy material

Endometrioid Adenocarcinoma Arising in Adenomyoma in a Woman with a Genital Prolapse - Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial cancer is the third-ranked genital malignancy in women and includes 3% of cancer deaths. There is a 2.8% chance of a woman developing endometrial cancer during her lifetime. Low-grade endometrioid adenocarcinomas are often seen along with endometrial hyperplasia, but high-grade endometrioid adenocarcinomas have more solid sheets of less-differentiated tumour cells, which are no longer organised into glands, often associated with surrounded atrophic endometrium. CASE REPORT: We present an unusual case of endometrial adenocarcinoma arising in adenomyoma in 74-year old wo

Elastin distribution in the normal uterus, uterine leiomyomas, adenomyosis and adenomyomas: a comparison.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the histologic distribution of elastin in the nonpregnant human uterus, uterine leiomyomas, adenomyosis and adenomyomas. STUDY DESIGN: Uteri were obtained from women undergoing hysterectomy for benign conditions, including 26 cases of uterine leiomyomas, 24 cases of adenomyosis, 18 adenomyomas and 6 cases of autopsy specimens. Specific histochemical staining techniques were employed in order to demonstrate the distribution of elastin. RESULTS: The distribution of elastin components in the uterus was markedly uneven and showed a decreasing gradient from outer to inner m

Diagnostic overlap between necrotic leiomyoma, adenomyoma and uterine sarcoma: an ultrasound challenge.

Atypical myometrial lesions may represent a significant diagnostic challenge even for experienced sonographers, particularly when ultrasound and MRI findings overlap among benign, borderline, and malignant entities. Reporting these cases may contribute to improving pattern recognition and refining the diagnostic work-up in clinical practice. We report the case of a 47-year-old woman presenting with menometrorrhagia, severe anemia, chronic pelvic pain, and rapid enlargement of a myometrial lesion. Transvaginal ultrasound revealed a 9-cm atypical myometrial mass with uncertain echostructure, dif

Laparoscopic surgery for broad ligament adenomyoma: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Adenomyoma of the broad ligament is rare. Owing to the absence of typical clinical signs and imaging methods, preoperative diagnosis is challenging, and it is mainly diagnosed through surgical pathology. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient experienced recurrent lower abdominal pain for 4 years. Treatments with traditional Chinese medicine and anti-inflammatory drugs were ineffective, and painkillers became less effective over time owing to resistance. Multiple ultrasounds revealed a mass in the right adnexa, but gynecological tumor markers were normal. DIAGNOSIS: The preoperative diagno

Juvenile Cystic Adenomyoma Mimicking a Uterine Anomaly: a Report of Two Cases.

Juvenile cystic adenomyoma is a rare form of adenomyosis and described as a new type of mullerian anomaly in literature. We are presenting two cases of juvenile cystic adenomyoma which were misdiagnosed preoperatively as unicornuate uterus with haematometra in a non-communicating rudimentary horn. The mainstay of treatment is complete resection of lesion.

Frequent β-catenin gene mutations in atypical polypoid adenomyoma of the uterus.

Atypical polypoid adenomyoma (APA) is an uncommon polypoid lesion of the uterus. To clarify the mechanism of its histogenesis, we examined the functional role of β-catenin, with reference to expression of p21(waf1), cyclin D1, cyclin E, CD10, and α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), as well as cell proliferation, in 7 lesions. In the epithelial components, expression of nuclear β-catenin, p21(waf1), and cyclin D1 was increased in a stepwise fashion from normal tissue through complex atypical hyperplasia and adenomyoma to APA lesions, particularly in squamous morular areas, whereas cell proliferation,

Adenomyoma of common bile duct arising in a type I choledochal cyst.

Adenomyoma can be misdiagnosed as an adenocarcinoma, leading to needless and extensive surgical resections. A 45-year-old woman presented with right hypochondrial pain. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a choledochal cyst. Excision of choledochal cyst with Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy was performed. A segment of dilated common bile duct and an attached nodule was received. Sections from the choledochal cyst showed a cyst wall composed of dense fibrous tissue lined by partially ulcerated columnar epithelium. Sections from the nodule showed interlacing whorls of smooth muscle bundles with entra
