Effect of psychological intervention on exercise adherence in type 2 diabetic subjects.

Previous research has pointed to the efficacy of physical activity in individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM). However, as with other populations, adherence to exercise programs is often problematic. This study assessed the effectiveness of a combination of exercise and psychological interventions in type 2 diabetics in terms of disease management and exercise adherence. Forty newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic subjects (54 +/- 6.5 years) took part in the study. Subjects were allocated to an exercise-only intervention (EO) or a combined exercise and psychological adherence

Prevention of urinary stones with hydration: a randomised clinical trial of an adherence intervention.

BACKGROUND: Increased fluid intake is universally recommended to decrease the risk of recurrent urinary stones; however, adherence is challenging. The effectiveness of interventions to maintain high fluid intake has not been well studied. We sought to determine whether a multicomponent behavioural intervention programme to promote high fluid intake reduces symptomatic stone recurrence, compared with a control. METHODS: In this randomised clinical trial, participants aged 12 years and older with a history of urinary stone disease and low 24 h urine volumes based on current guidelines were enro

Promoting Adherence to a Yoga Intervention for Veterans With Chronic Low Back Pain.

BACKGROUND: Research demonstrates that yoga can be effective for improving chronic low back pain (cLBP) among military veterans and non-veterans. Attendance of yoga interventions is necessary to obtain benefits, yet yoga class attendance can be a challenge both within and outside of research, especially for persons who lack resources. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to describe efforts to boost attendance within a randomized trial of yoga for cLBP, and to examine factors related to attendance. METHODS: A previous trial of yoga for cLBP among military veterans randomly assigned participants to 2

Modification of an Intervention to Improve Adherence in Adolescents and Young Adults With Bipolar Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Managing bipolar disorder (BD) is particularly challenging for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) ages 16 to 21. Few interventions exist that address self-management in AYAs with BD. Thus, this study aimed to modify the customized adherence enhancement behavioral intervention for AYAs through an iterative, patient-centered process. METHOD: The Obesity-Related Behavioral Intervention Trials (ORBIT) model was used for intervention development. In phase 1a, adherence barriers and facilitators were identified to refine intervention content. Phase 1b occurred following curriculum modif

The Usability of Diabetes MAP: A Web-delivered Intervention for Improving Medication Adherence.

BACKGROUND: Web-delivered interventions are a feasible approach to health promotion. However, if a website is poorly designed, difficult to navigate, and has technical bugs, it will not be used as intended. Usability testing prior to evaluating a website's benefits can identify barriers to user engagement and maximize future use. OBJECTIVE: We developed a Web-delivered intervention called Diabetes Medication Adherence Promotion (Diabetes MAP) and used a mixed-methods approach to test its usability prior to evaluating its efficacy on medication adherence and glycemic control in a randomized co

Treatment adherence in a lay health adviser intervention to treat tobacco dependence.

Lay health advisers (LHAs) are increasingly used to deliver tobacco dependence treatment, especially with low-socioeconomic status (SES) populations. More information is needed about treatment adherence to help interpret mixed evidence of LHA intervention effectiveness. This study examined adherence to behavioral counseling and nicotine patches in an LHA intervention with 147 Ohio Appalachian female daily smokers. Participants were randomly selected from clinics and randomized to the intervention condition of a randomized controlled trial. Overall, 75.5% of participants received all seven plan

Patient adherence to skin self-examination. effect of nurse intervention with photographs.

BACKGROUND: Results from a single case-control study suggest that skin self-examination (SSE) has the potential to reduce mortality from melanoma by 63%. Despite these encouraging results, SSE rates are low. Few prospective studies of interventions to increase SSE in high-risk cohorts have been performed. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a brief nurse-delivered intervention using digital photographs on patients' adherence to performing SSE. DESIGN SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: Patients at high risk for melanoma skin cancer (five or more dysplastic nevi) (N=100) were recruited from

Effective mHealth interventions to improve tuberculosis treatment adherence in Asia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Asia, where most new tuberculosis cases are reported, mobile health (mHealth) tools may improve treatment adherence and address practical difficulties in implementing directly observed therapy (DOT). We aim to systematically evaluate the impact of mHealth interventions on TB treatment adherence compared with standard care by synthesizing data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) conducted in Asia. METHODS: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Studies were eligible if they were RCTs conducted in an Asian countr

[Psychosocial factors and long-term adherence to lifestyle interventions in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus].

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex chronic illness that requires continuous management across multiple domains: nutrition, physical activity, psychological wellbeing and pharmacological therapy. The long-term success of these interventions depends on whether they can be maintained over time. This article discusses systemic, psychosocial and lifestyle factors that influence adherence to dietary lifestyle interventions and their implications for routine clinical care. Current guidelines are patient-focused, emphasizing individualization and adaptation to patients' needs within a multidisciplinar

Impact of Pharmacist-Led Interventions on Phosphate Binder Adherence and Clinical Outcomes in a Dialysis Population.

Patients receiving kidney replacement therapy (KRT) experience high medication burden and are at increased risk for medication-related problems and non-adherence. The objective of this study was to evaluate pharmacist-led interventions on adherence and phosphorus control. It was a prospective, three-phase study integrating a pharmacist into a hospital-based dialysis program that provided hemodialysis (chronic, acute, and in-patient), peritoneal dialysis, and home hemodialysis. This study showed improved adherence, phosphorus control, and reduced discrepancies among the studied population. Phar

Medication adherence interventions for South Asian populations with cardiovascular disease: A systematic review and narrative synthesis.

South Asian populations experience a disproportionate burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) globally, with evidence consistently highlighting suboptimal medication adherence across both regional and diaspora settings. While previous research has primarily identified socio-cultural barriers to adherence, there is a critical need to analyse the effectiveness and feasibility of interventional solutions to improve medication adherence in this population. This systematic review synthesised evidence on the reported effectiveness and feasibility of such interventions from 29 studies published betwee

Exploring factors of adherence to weight loss interventions in population with overweight/obesity: an umbrella review.

Adherence is key for achieving the optimal benefits from a weight loss intervention. Despite the number of studies on factors that promote adherence, their findings suggest inconsistent and fragmented evidence. The aim of this study was to review the existing factors of adherence to weight loss interventions and to find factors that facilitate the design of effective intervention programs. Six databases were searched for this umbrella review; after the screening process, 21 studies were included. A total of 47 factors were identified in six groups as relevant for adherence: (i) sociodemographi

A meta-analysis of technology-based interventions on treatment adherence and treatment success among TBC patients.

Various technology-based interventions have been designed to improve medication adherence and treatment success. However, research on the most effective mode to address this issue is still limited. Our study evaluated the effectiveness of technology-based interventions in improving treatment adherence, completion, and treatment success among tuberculosis (TBC) patients. We conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials by searching articles from six databases including PubMed, Science Direct, Cochrane, Jstor, Embase, and Scopus from 2018 to April 2023. Two independent reviewers asse

Interventions to Improve Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in Sub-Saharan Africa: An Updated Systematic Review.

Optimal adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains the bedrock of effective therapy and management of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This systematic review examines the effect of interventions in improving ART adherence in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which bears the largest global burden of HIV infection. In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, and based on our inclusion and exclusion criteria, PUBMED, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar databases were searched for published studies on ART adherence interventions from 2010 to 2019. Thirty-one eligible studies published between 2010 to 2019 wer

Technological Interventions for Medication Adherence in Adult Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Medication adherence is critical to the effectiveness of psychopharmacologic therapy. Psychiatric disorders present special adherence considerations, notably an altered capacity for decision making and the increased street value of controlled substances. A wide range of interventions designed to improve adherence in mental health and substance use disorders have been studied; recently, many have incorporated information technology (eg, mobile phone apps, electronic pill dispensers, and telehealth). Many intervention components have been studied across different disorders. Furthermo

Interventions for improving adherence to iron chelation therapy in people with sickle cell disease or thalassaemia.

BACKGROUND: Regularly transfused people with sickle cell disease (SCD) and people with thalassaemia (who are transfusion-dependent or non-transfusion-dependent) are at risk of iron overload. Iron overload can lead to iron toxicity in vulnerable organs such as the heart, liver and endocrine glands; which can be prevented and treated with iron chelating agents. The intensive demands and uncomfortable side effects of therapy can have a negative impact on daily activities and well-being, which may affect adherence. OBJECTIVES: To identify and assess the effectiveness of interventions (psychologic

Economic evaluation of mobile phone text message interventions to improve adherence to HIV therapy in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: A surge in mobile phone availability has fueled low cost short messaging service (SMS) adherence interventions. Multiple systematic reviews have concluded that some SMS-based interventions are effective at improving antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, and they are hypothesized to improve retention in care. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of SMS-based adherence interventions and explore the added value of retention benefits. METHODS: We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of weekly SMS interventions compared to standard care among HIV+ individual

The modeled lifetime cost-effectiveness of published adherence-improving interventions for antihypertensive and lipid-lowering medications.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare the cost-effectiveness of different interventions that have been shown to improve adherence with antihypertensive and lipid-lowering therapy, by combining a burden of nonadherence model framework with literature-based data on adherence-improving interventions. METHODS: MEDLINE was reviewed for studies that evaluated ≥1 adherence intervention compared with a control, used an adherence measure other than self-report, and followed patients for ≥6 months. Effectiveness was assessed as Relative Improvement, ratio of adherence with an intervention versus control. Cos
