Measuring adjustment to chronic skin disorders: validation of a self-report measure.

This article describes the development of a questionnaire that assesses problems in adapting to chronic skin disorders, the Adjustment to Chronic Skin Diseases Questionnaire. Patients (N = 442) with different skin disorders completed the original item pool. Principal-components analysis suggested a 6-factor solution that was largely replicated with 2 additional samples of 192 patients with psoriasis or atopic dermatitis and 165 patients with atopic dermatitis. Four of the subscales showed very good internal consistencies, retest reliabilities, and sufficient correlations with expert ratings: S

[Adjustment disorders according to ICD-11 in the context of somatic illnesses].

As a result of the burden of a somatic illness, mental illnesses can newly occur or existing ones can worsen. Psychiatric comorbidity in turn significantly worsens the prognosis of somatic illnesses. Adjustment disorders play an important role here: they significantly impair the active management of the underlying disease. The prevalence of adjustment disorders in somatic illnesses varies greatly depending on the context. Somatic physicians are the primary points of contact for those affected and play a crucial role. However, due to a lack of therapeutic guidelines, specialists in somatic disc

The longitudinal dispositions of people diagnosed with adjustment or severe stress disorders.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment and stress-related disorders are prevalent among psychiatric service users. Despite their prevalence, little is known about their prognosis. To reduce that gap, the present article documents the service use and diagnostic outcomes of people with adjustment or stress-related disorders presenting at Singapore's largest psychiatric emergency department. METHODS: Administrative data from 2014 to 2021 was retrieved to follow a group of 683 service users whose first-ever psychiatric presentation in 2014 warranted a diagnosis of adjustment or stress-related disorder. People we

Systematic review and meta-analysis of predictors of adjustment disorders in adults.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of adjustment disorder is common in clinical practice, yet there is lack of research on the etiology and epidemiology of adjustment disorders. The goal of this systematic review was to evaluate predictors of adjustment disorders in adults. METHODS: We conducted systematic searches in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO. We included 70 studies that examined thirteen theoretically-derived and predefined predictors of adjustment disorders with a total of 3,449,374 participants. RESULTS: We found that female gender, younger age, unemployed status, stress, physical illness and

Adjustment Disorders Are Uniquely Suited for eHealth Interventions: Concept and Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment disorders (also known as mental distress in response to a stressor) are among the most frequently diagnosed mental disorders in psychiatry and clinical psychology worldwide. They are also commonly diagnosed in clients engaging in deliberate self-harm and in those consulting general practitioners. However, their reputation in research-oriented mental health remains weak since they are largely underresearched. This may change when the International Statistical Classification of Diseases-11 (ICD-11) by the World Health Organization is introduced, including a new conceptuali

Depressive and adjustment disorders - some questions about the differential diagnosis: case studies.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis and treatment of mood disorders in youth are still problematic because in this age the clinical presentation is atypical, and the diagnostic tools and the therapies are the same as that used for the adults. Mood disorders are categorically divided into unipolar disorders (major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder) and bipolar disorder in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition, Text Revision), but mood symptoms are also comprised in the diagnostic criteria of the adjustment disorder (AD), which occur in many different psychiatric disor

Outcome for adjustment disorder with depressed mood: comparison with other mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: A review of the research literature on the diagnostic category of adjustment disorder indicates that its construct validity has not been established. Nevertheless, the diagnosis is made frequently, with an estimated incidence of 5-21% in psychiatric consultation services for adults. METHODS: Retrospective data was used to evaluate the construct validity of the adjustment disorder diagnostic category. The data primarily consisted of SF-36 Health Status Survey responses by a large group of adult psychiatric outpatients before treatment and again six months after beginning treatment.

Prevalence of DSM-III conduct and adjustment disorders for adolescent psychiatric inpatients.

The prevalence of DSM-III conduct and adjustment disorders in two adolescent psychiatric facilities, both located near large U.S. cities, was investigated. Overall, 31.6% of the adolescent inpatients were conduct disordered while 12.5% were adjustment disordered. The conduct disorders were primarily "aggressive" subtypes suggesting that this characteristic may influence hospitalization and diagnostic decisions. Such data on prevalence assists future treatment planning, allowing anticipation of case loads.

[Prevalence of adjustment disorder, acute and posttraumatic stress disorders as well as somatoform disorders in cancer patients].

We aimed to systematically summarize the empirical evidence on the 4-week-, 12-month-, and lifetime prevalence of adjustment disorders, acute and posttraumatic stress disorders as well as somatoform disorders in cancer patients. We evaluated 64 English or German language original papers and systematic reviews that assessed the prevalence of affective and anxiety disorders using structured clinical interviews published between 1995 and 2010. Adjusted prevalence rates were calculated using a random-intercept model. We found the following pooled adjusted 4-week prevalence rates: For adjustment di

ICD-11 adjustment disorder: Translation and validation of the Danish international adjustment disorder questionnaire among a working population of social educators.

Adjustment disorder is frequently used as a diagnostic category for work-related stress disorders in Denmark. However, the diagnostic category is poorly delineated in ICD-10 which has hampered clinical practice as well as research studying the development of work-related adjustment disorders. In ICD-11, the diagnostic category of adjustment disorder has been refined and a new self-report measure is available to operationalize symptoms. The aim of the current study is to translate the International Adjustment Disorder Questionnaire (IADQ) to Danish and test the psychometric properties of the sc

A Case Study on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Prolonged Grief Disorder, and Adjustment Disorder.

In the International Classification of Disease (ICD)-11, the World Health Organization (WHO) has made significant changes to simplify the diagnosis, especially in disorders specifically associated with stress. These changes help differentiate between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prolonged grief disorder (PGD), and adjustment disorder (AjD). This case study covers an individual's journey with signs of all three disorders. After suddenly losing his role in a family-owned business and the unexpected death of his son in his 20s, a man in his early 50s experienced significant mental angui

Insights Into Aspects Behind Internet-Related Disorders in Adolescents: The Interplay of Personality and Symptoms of Adjustment Disorders.

PURPOSE: Problematic Internet use (PIU) that has recently been referred to as Internet-related disorder is a growing health concern. Yet, it is unclear why some adolescents are developing problematic use, whereas others sustain control. Based on previous research, we hypothesize that personality traits (low conscientiousness and high neuroticism) act as predispositions for PIU. We further hypothesize that PIU can be understood as a maladaptive reaction toward critical life events and that these maladaptive reactions are exacerbated by dysfunctional personality traits. METHODS: The study inves

Increased prevalence of depression, anxiety, and adjustment and somatoform disorders in transsexual individuals.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore rates of depression, anxiety, and adjustment and somatoform disorders in a large sample of transsexual individuals (TSI), compared with matched non-TSI cohorts from general practices in Germany. METHODS: Individuals initially documented as transsexual (index date) between January 2010 and December 2018 were identified in 468 general practices (GP) from the IMS Disease Analyzer database (IQVIA). Non-transsexual women (NTSW) and men (NTSM) were matched (1:1) with transsexual individuals by age, index year, and physician. The main outcome measure

Development and validation of a self-report for the assessment of adjustment disorders.

Based on a recent diagnostic proposal for adjustment disorders a self-report assessment was developed. The current study reports validation results. Psychometric properties were examined using two different samples of 687 patients with cardiac arrhythmias and 86 patients from a psychosomatic outpatient clinic. Besides evaluating the internal structure and re-test reliability, associations with quality of life, general anxiety and depression, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and coping strategies were analyzed. The factor analysis confirmed the three postulated factors: intrusion, avoi

[Evaluation of a new concept for diagnosing adjustment disorders in a psychosomatic setting].

OBJECTIVE: Diagnoses of adjustment disorders are frequent in clinical settings, although diagnostic criteria are not very reliable or valid. This has led to a neglection of this topic in research. This article presents and applies a new concept (Maercker et al., 2007) for diagnosing adjustment disorders. METHODS: 96 patients of a psychosomatic policlinic were examined regarding their emotional well-being with a new questionnaire (Adjustment Disorder--New Module | ADNM). Furthermore, according to the new concept, adjustment disorders were assessed with a structured interview. Coping behaviour

Adolescent adjustment to chronic physical disorders--I. Comparing neurological and non-neurological conditions.

Early research on child adjustment to chronic illness assumed that each condition had a unique impact. Recently researchers have suggested that all chronic conditions influence adjustment in similar ways. To compare these models, data were collected on 165 adolescents having chronic conditions with and without brain involvement, and 49 healthy controls. Adolescents with brain-based conditions had more behaviour problems, less autonomous functioning and poorer school achievement. Children with conditions having no brain involvement differed from controls only in reporting less work experience a
