Coital and contraceptive behavior of female adolescents.

Structural interviews conducted with 532 female clients of a teen contraceptive clinic revealed a moderate level of coital activity i(in terms of both frequency of intercourse and number of partners) which typically began at age 15. Prior use of contraception was sporadic and almost exclusively confined to nonprescription methods. Primary reasons for nonuse of birth control included fear of lessening the pleasure of intercourse and lack of access to contraception. The data indicate that a combination of comprehensive sex education and ready access to birth control is necessary to prevent unint

Weight and Health Behavior Conversations in Adolescent Primary Care: A Qualitative Examination.

OBJECTIVE: Current clinical practice guidelines recommend that pediatricians screen all youth for overweight/obesity and provide or refer to treatment those with elevated weight status. Despite pediatricians' intentions to provide high-quality care, weight stigma and bias impede health care delivery. A shift in training is needed to optimize the experiences of adolescents with high weight status (body mass index ≥85 th percentile) during primary care visits. The present study sought adolescent, caregiver, and pediatrician perspectives on current practice, gaps in care, and needs for training t

The Association Between Perpetration of Relational Aggressive Tendencies and Adolescent Antisocial Behavior.

Most research on relational aggression has primarily examined these behaviors among children, with limited exploration of its developmental progression during early adolescence and its associations with antisocial behaviors such as alcohol use, physical aggression, and rule-breaking conduct. Guided by current theoretical models, this study employed a latent growth curve model to address these gaps in the literature by (1) examining the developmental onset and growth rate of relational aggression and (2) estimating the effects of its onset and growth on physical aggression, alcohol use, and rul

Adolescent Social Isolation Induces Persistent Impairments in Emotional Discrimination and Helping Behavior.

Prosocial behaviors, helpful actions directed toward the well-being of others, are an essential component of social behavior. Adolescence is a particularly sensitive period for the development of social behaviors, yet how social experience during this window shapes prosocial behavior remains poorly understood. Here, we used behavioral assays to examine how social isolation at different ages affects emotional discrimination and affiliative helping behavior in mice of both sexes. We found that adult mice raised in social isolation since weaning failed to allogroom distressed conspecifics and wer

Elevated prevalence of antisocial behavior in adolescent children whose mothers misuse opioids.

BACKGROUND: Past studies show that illicit opioid use may impair parents' ability to care for their children. However, few studies have examined adverse outcomes in adolescent children of mothers who misuse opioids. METHODS: Data come from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health's nationally representative matched sample of mothers and their adolescent children who resided in the same household. The outcome of interest was whether adolescents engaged in aggressive or antisocial behaviors in the past year. Using logistic regression, adolescent children whose mothers engaged in past-year opi

Reward-Related Neural Activity and Adolescent Antisocial Behavior in a Community Sample.

Behavioral research has found evidence supporting reward dominance in adolescence with externalizing disorders, but findings from neuroimaging studies have been largely heterogeneous. We examined the Feedback-Related Negativity (FRN) and P3b in relation to self-reported externalizing behavior among 78 adolescents (11-18 yrs) during a monetary gambling task with concurrent high-density electroencephalogram. As expected, the P3b and the FRN demonstrated greater evoked activity to reward and punishment, respectively. Further, high externalizing behavior was associated with greater P3b difference

Adolescent disruptive behavior and borderline personality disorder symptoms in young adult men.

Very few studies have prospective information, especially regarding males, on the prediction of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in adulthood from psychiatric disorders in childhood. Certain childhood disorders, however, have notably similar features in common with BPD. In particular, the affective dysfunction, hostility and interpersonal conflict of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and the impulsivity of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in particular may be indicative of an early developmental path towards BPD. The present study uses longitudinal data from a clinical sa

Interpersonal behavior, psychopathology, and relationship outcomes among adolescent mothers and their partners.

This study was designed to identify predictors of relationship outcomes among 179 young (ages 14-24) coparenting couples during the transition to parenthood, with a particular focus on interpersonal process and psychopathology. Findings indicated that couples identified as hostile during the prenatal assessment were more likely to report relationship violence at follow-up (2 years postbirth). Couples identified as warm were more likely to remain together as coparents even if their romantic relationship dissolved. Couples in which the female partner was highly controlling were less likely to be

Association between P3 event-related brain potential amplitude and adolescent problem behavior.

This study examined P3 event-related brain potential amplitude and the age of onset of adolescent problem behaviors associated with the development of externalizing psychopathology. Five hundred and one male and 627 female 17-year-old twins reported whether and when they had initiated tobacco, alcohol, or illicit drug use, had police contact, or had sexual intercourse. P3 amplitude was recorded using a visual oddball task. Each of these behaviors was associated with reduced P3 amplitude. When these five behaviors were used to create a composite early problem behavior scale reflecting onset pri

Pain-behavior contracts: effective management of the adolescent in sickle-cell crisis.

Pain-behavior contracts can be utilized as an alternative method of managing the discomfort experienced by adolescents in sickle-cell crisis. The psychological impact of sickle-cell disease, the developmental need of adolescents to control situations in which they find themselves, and principles of pain control all provide theoretical bases supporting the use of pain contracts in clinical practice. If nurses are to effectively use such contracts, they must understand how to develop and implement them in the clinical setting. In addition, research can be designed to explore the use of such cont

Blunted food conditioned place preference-like behavior in adolescent-stressed male hamsters.

Social stress during adolescence results in long lasting weight gain, obesity, and enhanced food hoarding behavior in hamsters. We wanted to determine whether stress also enhanced conditioned place preference-like behavior (CPP-like) for food reward, as would be expected from studies with substances like cocaine. Our experimental animals were exposed daily to aggressive adults for two weeks in early puberty, while also trained to explore a V-shaped maze containing a food reward at one end. They were tested for CPP-like behavior on the last day of social stress. Our results showed that while st

Prenatal exposure to alcohol impairs social play behavior in adolescent male mice.

Prenatal ethanol exposure affects brain development and causes neural impairment, leading to both cognitive and behavioral consequences in the offspring. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of prenatal exposure to small amounts of alcohol on social play behavior in adolescent male offspring. Swiss mice were prenatally exposed to ethanol by feeding pregnant dams with a liquid diet containing 25% alcohol-derived calories during gestation (alcohol group). They were then compared to both pair-fed dams that received an isocaloric liquid diet containing 0% alcohol-derived
