[The effects of the psychiatric hospital on an adolescent's sexual development.].

Diego, a young adolescent, is hospitalised in a psychiatric unit for anorexia. The diagnosis of anorexia, as well as medical practices, result in resistance from the young man, for whom being "anorexic" seems incompatible with a masculine and heterosexual vision of oneself. His passage through the psychiatric unit is then not without effect on his sexual development.

von Hippel-Lindau development in children and adolescents.

The autosomal dominant von Hippel-Lindau disease (vHL) is associated with a lifelong risk of tumor development, especially retinal and CNS hemangioblastomas, pheochromocytoma, and renal cell carcinoma. Knowledge of paediatric vHL development is limited, and current surveillance guidelines are based on expert opinions. We aimed to describe the course of vHL development in children and adolescents, focusing on age at first manifestation, manifestation frequencies, and types. The prevalence of vHL diagnosis as well as manifestations in childhood were evaluated based on 99 patients, who had starte

Genetic influences on the development of grip strength in adolescence.

Enhanced physical strength is a secondary sex characteristic in males. Sexual dimorphism in physical strength far exceeds sex differences in stature or total body mass, suggesting a legacy of intense sexual selection. Upper-body strength is a particularly promising marker of intrasexual competitiveness in young men. Consequently, it is assumed that sex-influenced gene expression contributes to the development of physical strength. It is unclear, however, whether the underlying sources of individual differences in strength development are comparable across sex. We obtained three measurements of

Pubertal timing and the development of psychopathology in adolescence and beyond.

This article is part of a Special Issue "Puberty and Adolescence". This paper examines consistency of effects of pubertal timing (going through puberty earlier, later or at the same time one's cohort of peers) on the development of psychopathology during adolescence as well as the persistence of effects into adulthood. It is argued that early maturing girls are at unique risk for psychopathology not only in terms of elevated internalizing and externalizing symptoms and disorders during adolescence but also persistence of elevated risk for depressive disorders and other symptomatology in adulth

Development of obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome in adolescents.

Obesity in adolescents is prevalent worldwide. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is often associated with obesity in women, and it has serious metabolic and reproductive health implications. Although PCOS does not become clinically visible until early adolescence, its origins are likely much earlier. Therefore, we reviewed the recent literature regarding the mechanisms linking the development of PCOS and obesity in adolescent girls. We found that excess abdominal adipose tissue (AT) initiates metabolic and endocrine aberrations that are central in the progression of PCOS. As an example, abdomin

Effect of hyperprolactinemia during development in children and adolescents.

Increased levels of prolactin associated with some antipsychotic treatment can potentially lead to serious adverse events including gynecomastia, galactorrhea, oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, and pituitary tumors. Clinicians may need to employ pharmacotherapeutic interventions such as reducing dosage, switching antipsychotics, or prescribing adjunctive agents to minimize or prevent these negative side effects and improve patients' outcomes.

Adolescent Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Recent Developments.

Adolescents and young adults continue to have the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases. New chlamydia and gonorrhea diagnostic tests are being used in innovative ways to increase the number of infections that are detected. Nevertheless, challenges such as gonorrhea resistance and partner notification and treatment continue to hinder efforts to reduce the prevalence of these two bacterial infections. Although recent surveillance data suggest a decreasing trend of herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) incidence among adolescents and young adults, the incidence of sexually transmitted human pa

Adolescent childbearing in developing countries: a global review.

This article discusses the current levels and recent trends in the rate of adolescent childbearing, the timing of the first birth, and births to unmarried women for 43 developing countries. Differences in rates of adolescent childbearing by residence and level of education are also examined. The analysis is based on nationally representative fertility surveys. Substantial declines in adolescent fertility have occurred in North Africa and Asia, but levels are still high in some countries. Declines are beginning to occur in sub-Saharan Africa, but current levels are still high in most countries

Development of eating behaviors among children and adolescents.

The prevalence of obesity among children is high and is increasing. We know that obesity runs in families, with children of obese parents at greater risk of developing obesity than children of thin parents. Research on genetic factors in obesity has provided us with estimates of the proportion of the variance in a population accounted for by genetic factors. However, this research does not provide information regarding individual development. To design effective preventive interventions, research is needed to delineate how genetics and environmental factors interact in the etiology of childhoo

Effects of Cannabis Exposure on Adolescent Health and Development: A Narrative Review.

Adolescence is an immature but adventurous time period of exploration. Due to rapid developments of the brain with unbalanced release of neurotransmitters, adolescents are prone to impulsivity that may carry out potentially dangerous behaviors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of high school students have reported the use of cannabis or marijuana in 2019, and the trend has not declined since. Previous studies have shown that cannabis not only affects cognitive and social behaviors, but also produces psychological responses to stress. In this revi

Longitudinal associations between adolescent adversity, brain development and behavioural and emotional problems.

Adolescent adversity could have lasting effects on mental health, potentially through neurodevelopmental changes. This study used a random intercept cross-lagged panel model to examine how adverse experiences, brain development, and behavioural and emotional problems are linked over time in the ABCD study (N ≈ 12.000, USA). We found a positive association between family conflict and behavioural and emotional problems: family conflict was related to increased problems at 10 - 12 years (β = 0.06, p = 0.002), and vice versa. At 12 - 14 years, behavioural and emotional problems were also related t

Startle potentiation to unpredictable threat predicts adolescent development of generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: An elevated startle reflex in anticipation of unpredictable threat has been associated with concurrent anxiety disorders. However, only one study to date has examined whether startle potentiation in anticipation of unpredictable threat predicts the development of anxiety disorders. METHOD: In a community sample of 309 adolescents, we examined whether the startle reflex in anticipation of predictable or unpredictable threat at age 15 predicted onset of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) at age 18. To evaluate the specificity of these relationships,

Friendship Network and School Socialization Correlates of Adolescent Ethnic-Racial Identity Development.

Ethnic-racial identity (ERI) development is consequential for youth adjustment and includes exploration, resolution, and affect about the meaning of one's ethnic-racial group membership. Little is known about how identity-relevant experiences, such as ethnic-racial socialization and discrimination in peer relationships and school contexts, catalyze adolescent ERI development. The present study examines how identity-relevant experiences in friend and school contexts (i.e., proportion of same-ethnoracial friends, cultural socialization among friends, friends' ERI dimensions, friends' experiences

Design and development of an intelligent wearing system for adolescent spinal orthotics.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the deformity of the human spine in three-dimensional space. It is a disease with a long course and difficult to recover in a short time. Currently, spinal orthotic braces are an effective non-surgical treatment for this condition. However, existing spinal orthotic braces are still deficient. For example, existing spinal orthotics braces have no way of knowing how correct, effective, and comfortable a patient is wearing the orthotics. Based on distributed pressure monitoring technology, this paper conducts pressure acquisition and compensation research on spi

Intimate Partner Violence and Child and Adolescent Cognitive Development: A Systematic Review.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health and human rights issue, with millions of children affected worldwide. While several reviews have explored the emotional-behavioural functioning of children exposed to IPV, this review aimed to examine the relationship between children's exposure to IPV and their cognitive development, and to identify associated factors such as aspects of parenting. The databases MEDLINE, PsycInfo, EMBASE, Family and Society Studies Worldwide, CINAHL, and ERIC were searched using key words related to IPV, such as domestic, family, partner, interparental, spousa

Prior test experience confounds longitudinal tracking of adolescent cognitive and motor development.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of trajectories in longitudinal studies, considered the gold standard method for tracking functional growth during adolescence, decline in aging, and change after head injury, is subject to confounding by testing experience. METHODS: We measured change in cognitive and motor abilities over four test sessions (baseline and three annual assessments) in 154 male and 165 female participants (baseline age 12-21 years) from the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) study. At each of the four test sessions, these participants wer

Development of brain atlases for early-to-middle adolescent collision-sport athletes.

Human brains develop across the life span and largely vary in morphology. Adolescent collision-sport athletes undergo repetitive head impacts over years of practices and competitions, and therefore may exhibit a neuroanatomical trajectory different from healthy adolescents in general. However, an unbiased brain atlas targeting these individuals does not exist. Although standardized brain atlases facilitate spatial normalization and voxel-wise analysis at the group level, when the underlying neuroanatomy does not represent the study population, greater biases and errors can be introduced during

Adolescent development of cortical oscillations: Power, phase, and support of cognitive maturation.

During adolescence, the integration of specialized functional brain networks related to cognitive control continues to increase. Slow frequency oscillations (4-10 Hz) have been shown to support cognitive control processes, especially within prefrontal regions. However, it is unclear how neural oscillations contribute to functional brain network development and improvements in cognitive control during adolescence. To bridge this gap, we employed magnetoencephalography (MEG) to explore changes in oscillatory power and phase coupling across cortical networks in a sample of 68 adolescents and youn

BMI Development and Early Adolescent Psychosocial Well-Being: UK Millennium Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The underlying influences on different patterns of BMI development are not well understood, and psychosocial outcomes linked to BMI development have been little investigated. Objectives were to identify BMI developmental trajectories across the first decade of life, examine early life predictors of trajectory membership, and investigate whether being on a particular BMI trajectory is associated with markers of psychosocial well-being. METHODS: We used latent class analysis to derive BMI trajectories by using data collected at ages 3, 5, 7, and 11 years on 16 936 par
