PURPOSE: This study explored how adolescent mothers in Pakistan experience the transition to motherhood and the mental health challenges that arise during this period.
METHODS: A focused ethnographic study was conducted with 25 adolescent mothers in Matiari, Sindh. Data were collected through semi‑structured interviews, participant observations, and artifact elicitation. Meleis' Transition Theory informed the study focus and development of the interview guide. Reflexive thematic analysis guided interpretation, informed by an intersectional lens.
FINDINGS: Five themes described mothers' exper

BACKGROUND: Adolescent pregnancy remains a public health concern in Ecuador, particularly among socially vulnerable populations. Evidence from high-risk neonatal settings suggests that adverse neonatal outcomes associated with adolescent pregnancy may be strongly influenced by structural and healthcare-related factors rather than maternal age alone. However, data from neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in low- and middle-income countries remain limited.
OBJECTIVE: To compare maternal characteristics, obstetric practices, and neonatal outcomes between adolescent and adult mothers in a high-

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent pregnancy is a major social and public health problem that burdens affected families, the communities and societies globally. It has been associated with a higher prevalence of adverse pregnancy outcomes compared to pregnancy in adults. To compare adverse pregnancy outcomes in adolescents (13-19 years) and those in adults (20 to 35 years) at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana and investigate the associated factors among adolescents.
METHODS: This comparative study involved 110 adolescents (13-19 years) and 220 adults (20 to 35 years) who delivered at the Mate

In family-based treatment (FBT) for adolescent anorexia nervosa, all family members are encouraged to attend sessions with the understanding that absences negatively impact treatment. There are, however, many obstacles to family members' attendance, and there is no research to indicate whether family member attendance improves treatment outcomes. We examined attendance patterns of 198 families who participated in FBT at a specialist pediatric eating disorders program and assessed the extent to which participation by mothers (n = 194), fathers (n = 175), and siblings (n = 165; 50% female) predi

The negative consequences of maternal depression are a major public health concern, both for mothers and for their children. Despite the high prevalence of depression among adolescent mothers, little is known about the patterns of adolescent mothers' depression in the early parenting years. The present study examined mothers' depression during the first 2 years following childbirth in a sample of 428 young mothers (20 or younger at first childbirth) who were participants in a randomized controlled trial of a home visiting parenting support program. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the s

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: We aimed to investigate metabolic risk factors, insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion in adolescent offspring of mothers with type 1 diabetes compared with offspring of non-diabetic mothers.
METHODS: During 1993-1999, pregnancies of women with type 1 diabetes in Denmark were prospectively reported to a central registry in the Danish Diabetes Association. Data included information on maternal demography, diabetes status and pregnancy outcome. We invited 746 eligible children from this cohort (index offspring) to a follow-up examination. Control offspring were identified th

OBJECTIVE: To compare the morbidity and outcome of low birthweight babies (birthweight < 2000 gm) of adolescent (age < 20 years) and older mothers.
DESIGN: Cross sectional descriptive study.
SETTING: The newborn Unit of the Kenyatta National Hospital.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: All babies weighing less than 2000 gm at birth whose mothers consented to the study had their gestational age verified using the Dubowitz scoring system. They were then followed up by daily clinical assessment until discharge, death or up to one month in the ward. The babies were divided into two groups according to thei

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric disorder that impacts both the adolescents themselves and their parents. Parenting stress is associated with impaired mental health of parents and poorer treatment outcomes for their children. Understanding the course of parenting stress during inpatient treatment and differences between mothers and fathers is important to improve AN treatment and (long term) outcome.
METHOD: Within a longitudinal controlled design, parents of adolescents with AN are compared to healthy children (HC) at three time points during and after their daughters

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa the birth rate among teenage mothers is the highest in the world. In 2021, there would be 6,114,000 births for 15-19-year-olds in this part of the world. In Cameroon, the fertility rate among adolescents aged 15-19 is 24%. However, there is a significant lack of data on the mental health of teenage mothers. Given the biopsychosocial conditions of the perinatal period and adolescence, we hypothesise that the prevalence of mental disorders and the risk of suicide is very high in Cameroon. The aim is therefore to determine the prevalence of perinatal mental disor

Adolescent mothers experience higher rates of trauma and abuse, as well as increased risks for mental health disorders, compared to adolescent girls who are not mothers, making them a particularly vulnerable population and contributing to them feeling less supported by or allied with their medical provider. Women with a history of childhood abuse face increased rates of obstetric complications; their infants are at increased risk for low birthweight, developmental and intellectual delays, and behavioral problems. Trauma-informed care has become widespread in mental health settings; however, th

Adolescent mothers are at high risk for negative life events, such as previous childhood physical abuse, impaired psychosocial functioning, and young adulthood revictimization. However, little is known about the potential pathways in these events; hence, little is known about opportunities for intervention. This study used structural equation modeling to investigate mediators of the effects of parental child abuse on later psychosocial functioning and revictimization (in the form of intimate partner violence and sexual violence) among adolescent mothers, with longitudinal data spanning 2.4 yea

Abuse risk potential and parenting attitudes of 66 adolescent mothers were examined during the perinatal period using self-report instruments. Approximately one-half of the sample was considered to be at significant risk. Specific risk factors included distress, rigidity in parenting attitudes, and inappropriate expectations of children. Younger adolescents were at greater risk of abuse, advocated the use of physical punishment more strongly, and reported greater unhappiness than older adolescents. Teens reporting limited social support were also at greater risk for abuse. Low acceptance of th

Existing research has predominantly relied on the perspective of a single informant to investigate the association between maternal psychological control and adolescent depressive symptoms, providing only limited insight into these complex dynamics. To provide a more nuanced understanding, the present study employed polynomial regression with response surface analysis (RSA) to investigate how mother-adolescent consistency and discrepancy in perceived maternal psychological control was associated with adolescent depressive symptoms, as well as the moderating roles of adolescent gender and age i

Child sexual abuse (CSA) and intimate partner violence (IPV) are both global problems with negative health implications. This study examines whether mothers' lifetime experiences of IPV relate to their own psychological distress and to mother-adolescent conflict in families in which an adolescent has disclosed sexual abuse. The recency of IPV was examined as a potential moderator of these relations. Participants were 356 adolescents and their nonoffending mothers. Families were seeking services from a children's advocacy center in the southern United States. Mothers reported their IPV victimiz

OBJECTIVE: Trauma experiences of North Korean defector (NKD) mothers during escape and resettlement may extend beyond the individual and shape the mental health of the next generation. This study examined the association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in NKD mothers and the mental health of their adolescent children, focusing on the mediating roles of family functioning and adverse childhood experiences (ACE).
METHODS: Survey data from 113 NKD mother-adolescent child dyads (children aged 12-24) were collected from 2023 to 2024. Mothers reported on their traumatic exper

Depression is transmitted within families, but the mechanisms involved in such transmission are not clearly defined. A potential marker of familial risk is the neural response to errors, which may play a role in depression symptoms and is known to be partially heritable. Here, 97 mother-daughter dyads completed a Flanker task while electroencephalography markers of error monitoring were recorded: the error-related negativity (ERN) and response-locked delta and theta power. We assessed whether these measures of neural response to errors 1) were associated with history of recurrent major depress

BACKGROUND: With breast cancer becoming the most diagnosed cancer in the world, the number of breast cancer-afflicted mothers with adolescent daughters is also rising. Further, adolescent daughters' mothers serve as role models for in identity formation processes, especially concerning gender and sexuality. Nevertheless, breast cancer threats mother's health, including such a key symbol of her womanhood-the breast-which may adversely affect the development of an adolescent daughter's own sense of personal identity and womanhood. However, few researchers and practitioners have paid attention to

This study investigated the links between parental worry, parental over-control and adolescent social anxiety in parent-adolescent dyads. Using a longitudinal sample of adolescents (Mage = 14.28) and their parents (224 mother-daughter, 234 mother-son, 51 father-daughter, and 47 father-son dyads), comparisons were conducted using cross-lagged path models across two time points. We used adolescent reports of social anxiety and feelings of being overly controlled by parents, and mother and father self-reports of worries. Our results show that boys' social anxiety predicted higher perceived parent
