The adrenal cortex is an endocrine organ organized into concentric zones that are specialized to produce specific steroid hormones essential for life. The development and maintenance of the adrenal cortex are complex, as a fetal adrenal is first formed from a common primordium with the gonads, followed by its separation in a distinct primordium, the invasion of the adrenal primordium by neural crest-derived cells to form the medulla, and finally its encapsulation. The fetal cortex is then replaced by a definitive cortex, which will establish zonation and be maintained throughout life by regene

Glucocorticoids, commonly used in the treatment of various disorders, particularly if administered at high doses, may lead to the development of iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome, being by far the most common iatrogenic disorder of the adrenal gland. In some cases, however, adrenal cortex function may be affected by other drugs and risk of the development of various clinical entities is dependent on the drug, its dose, as well as on the duration of the treatment. This risk is also related to the baseline function of this gland. Because little is known about the influence of non-hormonal drugs on a

The effects of adaptation to cold-and-hypoxic exposure on the cardiovascular system, lipid peroxidation and concentrations of adaptogenesis involved hormones were studied in male students. The two weeks cold- and hypoxic training was shown to be accompanied by a significant increase of apnea duration, reduced velocity of bradycardia development and a more rapid ECG post-cold and- hypoxic exposure normalization, as well as by inhibition of activation of adrenal cortex and thyroid gland after stress of different nature. The changes of the character of influences between the indices under study,

Many adrenocortical diseases are more prevalent in women than in men, but the reasons underlying this sex bias are still unknown. Recent studies involving gonadectomy and sex hormone replacement experiments in mice have shed some light onto the molecular basis of sexual dimorphism in the adrenal cortex. Indeed, it has been shown that gonadal hormones influence many aspects of adrenal physiology, ranging from stem cell-dependent tissue turnover to steroidogenesis and X-zone dynamics. This article reviews current knowledge on adrenal cortex sexual dimorphism and the potential mechanisms underlyi

The interrelations of circannual rhythms of the functional state of pineal gland, hypophysis, adrenal cortex, thymus in healthy women and men from 20 to 79 years were studied. Fluctuations of melatonin, ACTH, cortisol and thymic serum factor, which were exchanged in aging (the season peaks of hormones and its acrophase) were found in blood of healthy 20-29 years old people. The changes of rhythmicity of indices were in male earlier (pineal gland and hypophysis over 30 years, thymus and adrenal cortex over 40 years) and more impressive than in women. The aging changes of pineal gland function's

Psychologic states produced by environmental or physiologic stresses are usually associated with hypersecretion of adrenal hormones, particularly epinephrine and the glucocorticoids (hydrocortisone in humans or corticosterone in rats). A common mechanism links the secretion of these hormones, even though the adrenal medulla and cortex have different embryologic origins and biochemical properties and very different mechanisms controlling their secretory activities, ie, a cholinergic nervous input stimulates medullary secretion while a hormone, corticotropin (ACTH), activates secretion from the

The adrenal glands are paired endocrine organs that play a vital role in maintaining homeostasis by regulating blood pressure, metabolism, electrolyte balance, and the body's response to stress. Each gland comprises the adrenal cortex, which produces steroid hormones, and the adrenal medulla, responsible for catecholamine synthesis. The cortex is further divided into three functional zones, the zona glomerulosa (mineralocorticoids), zona fasciculata (glucocorticoids), and zona reticularis (androgens), while the medulla secretes adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine under sympathetic control.

As a result of clinical examination of patients with juvenile thyrotoxicosis there was revealed an increase of the blood plasma renin and a derangement of mineralocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex expressed in increased aldosterone excretion, retention of sodium in the organism and reduction of potassium excretion. Normalization of aldosterone excretion in thyrotoxicosis compensation and after the surgical intervention can indicate the influence of increased amount of thyroid hormones on the mineralocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex.

Genes that modulate the action of hormones and cytokines play a critical role in stress response, survival, and in growth and differentiation of cells. Many of these biological response modifiers are responsible for various pathological conditions, including inflammation, infection, cachexia, aging, genetic disorders, and cancer. We have previously identified a new gene, BRE, that is responsive to DNA damage and retinoic acid. Using multiple-tissue dot-blotting and Northern blotting, BRE was recently found to be strongly expressed in adrenal cortex and medulla, in testis, and in pancreas, wher

Production of adrenal steroid hormones in pubertal male Wistar rats exposed to low doses of DDT during both prenatal and postnatal and only postnatal development was evaluated. Altered production of all types of steroid hormones and serum steroid profile with opposite changes in rats exposed prenatally and postnatally, and only postnatally was found. The study showed that daily exposure to low doses of DDT enhanced conversion of progesterone to 17OH-progesterone and did not exert selective antiandrogenic or proestrogenic action unlike effect of toxic and subtoxic doses. Impaired morphogenesis

An 8 year old male castrated Russian Blue cat with polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, abdominal enlargement, unkempt and easily epilated hair coat and abdominal alopecia is described. As a first step diabetes mellitus was diagnosed. Further work-up by ultrasonography revealed severe bilateral enlargement of the adrenal glands. Hypercortisolism was suspected and therefore ACTH stimulation test and dexamethasone suppression test were performed. In all samples cortisol concentrations were below the detection limit of the assay used. Various precursor hormones were measured and high progesterone co

The adrenal cortex undergoes multiple structural and functional rearrangements to satisfy the systemic needs for steroids during fetal life, postnatal development, and adulthood. A fully functional adrenal cortex relies on the proper subdivision in regions or 'zones' with distinct but interconnected functions, which evolve from the early embryonic stages to adulthood, and rely on a fine-tuned gene network. In particular, the steroidogenic activity of the fetal adrenal is instrumental in maintaining normal fetal development and growth. Here, we review and discuss the most recent advances in our

Primary adrenal insufficiency occurs when the production of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid hormones from the adrenal cortex decreases. Cardiovascular manifestations, although a rare sequela in acute adrenal insufficiency, include arrhythmias, heart failure and ischemia. Rapid identification and treatment are crucial as mortality can occur rapidly. We present a patient with no underlying adrenal dysfunction who presented with worsening renal function and subsequent development of acute adrenal insufficiency manifesting with hypothermia, hypotension, and junctional rhythm requiring vasopre

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are steroid hormones, which are essential for life. They are secreted by the adrenal cortex under the control of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Glucocorticoids are essential for the normal function of most organ systems and, in both, excess and deficiency can lead to significant adverse consequences. Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is a rare, life-threatening disorder characterized by insufficient production of corticosteroid hormones. Primary AI is defined by the inability of the adrenal cortex to produce sufficient amounts of glucocorticoids and/or mineraloco

The adrenal cortex is functionally a three-dimensional gland that secretes glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and sex steroids. Of these three classes of steroids only the gluco- and mineralocorticoid hormones are necessary to sustain life. The availability of sensitive and specific radioimmunoassays has permitted accurate measurement of practically every steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex. As in other endocrinopathies, suppression studies are employed when hyperfunction is suspected, while provocative tests are used to detect hypofunction. These dynamic studies enable the clinic

The adult human adrenal cortex produces steroid hormones that are crucial for life, supporting immune response, glucose homeostasis, salt balance and sexual maturation. It consists of three histologically distinct and functionally specialized zones. The fetal adrenal forms from mesodermal material and produces predominantly adrenal C19 steroids from its fetal zone, which involutes after birth. Transition to the adult cortex occurs immediately after birth for the formation of the zona glomerulosa and fasciculata for aldosterone and cortisol production and continues through infancy until the zon

The adrenal gland is paired peripheral end organs of the neuroendocrine system and is responsible for producing crucial stress hormones from its two functional compartments, the adrenal cortex, and the adrenal medulla under stimuli. Left-right asymmetry in vertebrates exists from the central nervous system to peripheral paired endocrine glands. The sided difference in the cerebral cortex is extensively investigated, while the knowledge of asymmetry of paired endocrine glands is still poor. The present study aims to investigate the asymmetries of bilateral adrenal glands, which play important r

BACKGROUND: The adrenal cortex provides adequate steroidogenic responses to environmental changes. However, in desert rodents, the adrenocortical activity varies according to several factors especially sex, age, and seasonal variations. Herein, we examined the sex differences in the adrenal cortex activity and explored the involvement of sex hormones in the regulation of this function in Libyan jird Meriones libycus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four adult male and female animals weighing 109-110 g were captured in the breeding season and equally assigned into control and gonadectomised grou

Neoplasms of the adrenal gland may cause increased hormone activity, which has profound effects on the growing child. The adrenal gland should be viewed as two functionally separate glands: the adrenal medulla and adrenal cortex. Neoplasms of the adrenal cortex secrete excess glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, or androgens. Adrenal medulla neoplasms generally secrete excess catecholamines. Understanding the anatomy, embryology, and physiology of the adrenal cortex and medulla allows surgeons to diagnose these tumors, prepare the patients for surgery, and treat them effectively after resectio
