Necrotizing fasciitis caused by Aeromonas hydrophilia in an immunocompetent child.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive and potentially fatal infection. It is characterized by extensive subcutaneous and muscle necrosis. Aeromonus hydrophilia is a gram-negative faculatively anaerobic bacillus that is part of the normal flora of nonfecal sewage and is found in most water systems, soil, and fresh brackish water. Necrotizing fasciitis caused by A. hydrophilia have occurred in children who had underlying systemic diseases or immune dysfunction. We report a 14-year-old boy without underlying systemic diseases or immunodeficiency who developed necrotizing fasciitis second

BOX-PCR is an adequate tool for typing Aeromonas spp.

PCR-based methods of fingerprinting take advantage of the presence of repetitive sequences that are interspersed throughout the genome of diverse bacterial species. They include the repetitive extragenic palindromic (REP) sequence, the enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence (ERIC) and the 154-bp BOX element. The combination of the three methods is used for fine discrimination of strains and is designated as rep-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). REP-PCR and ERIC-PCR have been shown to be useful for typing Aeromonas strains. To our knowledge, rep-PCR fingerprinting method using

Purification and characterization of inducible beta-lactamases in Aeromonas spp.

beta-Lactamases from Aeromonas hydrophila and A. sobria were purified and characterized. Both species produced beta-lactamases that were inducible by either cefoxitin or imipenem. These species were resistant to ampicillin and cephalothin but not imipenem. Isoelectric focusing of sonic extracts revealed one band at pI 8.0 and a second band at pI 7.0 for A. hydrophila. Likewise, A. sobria produced two bands, one at pI 8.4 and the other at pI 7.0. Two enzymes from each species were separated by flatbed electrofocusing gel and purified to homogeneity. The molecular weight of the pI 7.0 enzyme (A1

Antibacterial activity of palmarosa oil significantly varies between Aeromonas veronii and Aeromonas caviae and exhibits selective action on tetracycline and sulfonamide resistant A. caviae.

AIMS: To investigate the antibacterial activity of three (palmarosa, basil and rosemary) essential oils (EOs) on Aeromonas veronii and Aeromonas caviae, and determine minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of potent EO against tetracycline and sulfonamide resistant strains. METHODS AND RESULTS: Palmarosa oil (PMO) showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher inhibition zones against both A. veronii and A. caviae (n = 30) than basil and rosemary in the disk diffusion assay. The MIC (% v/v) of PMO ranged from 0.008% to 1.00%. The mean MIC was significantly higher for A. caviae (0.48 ± 0.24%) than A.

Endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Aeromonas hydrophila following intravenous blood transfusion.

The genus Aeromonas is a natural inhabitant of aquatic environments. These microorganisms are commonly regarded as pathogens of fish. Aeromonas' involvement in the eye is rare, with only a few reported cases of endogenous endophthalmitis. Here, we report a case of a woman in her early 20s presenting with sudden onset diminution of vision in her right eye, along with pain, redness and whitish opacity following a blood transfusion. Clinical examination suggested endogenous endophthalmitis. Despite negative blood, urine and stool cultures, evisceration and culture of intraocular contents revealed

Effectiveness of Feed-Based Monovalent Aeromonas Vaccine in Farmed Carp.

Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila) is responsible for causing abdominal dropsy, swimming abnormalities, skin ulcerations, and pale gills in fish. Vaccination is an essential strategy for disease prevention in aquaculture. This study evaluated the efficacy of an oral vaccine against A. hydrophila in Ctenopharyngodon idella (C. idella). The vaccine was formulated as feed-based monovalent pellets, incorporating or spraying formalin-killed A. hydrophila on/into commercial feed with 30% crude protein. Mineral and fish oils were used as adjuvants at 10% of the feed. Prior to the trial, the experim

Transcriptional regulatory factor AHA_4052 regulates aminoglycoside resistance in Aeromonas hydrophila.

INTRODUCTION: With the increasing identification of multidrug resistance in Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from diverse food sources, there is an urgent need to investigate its resistance mechanism. Previous studies have demonstrated that OmpR/PhoB-type response regulators (RRs) play critical roles in mediating bacterial tolerance to various environmental stresses. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we constructed an AHA_4052 gene knockout strain, a member of the OmpR/PhoB family of DNA-binding response regulators, and studied its phenotypic characteristics. Deletion of the AHA_4052 gene rend

Cbl upregulates cysH for hydrogen sulfide production in Aeromonas veronii.

Endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is generated in many metabolism pathways, and has been recognized as a second messenger against antibiotics and reactive oxygen species (ROS). In Aeromonas veronii, Small Protein B (SmpB) plays an important role in resisting stress. The absence of smpB could trigger sulfate assimilation pathway to adapt the nutrient deficiency, of which was mediated by up-regulation of cbl and cys genes and followed with enhancing H2S production. To figure out the mutual regulations of cbl and cys genes, a series of experiments were performed. Compared with the wild type, cysH

Role of LuxR-type regulators in fish pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila.

LuxR-type transcriptional factors are essential in many bacterial physiological processes. However, there have been no reports on their roles in Aeromonas hydrophila. In this study, six stable silent strains were constructed using shRNA. Significant decreases in the expression levels of luxR05 , luxR08 , luxR19 , luxR11 , luxR164 and luxR165 were shown in their respective strains by qRT-PCR. The luxR05 -RNAi and luxR164 -RNAi exhibit the most significant changes in sensitivity to kanamycin and gentamicin. The luxR05 -RNAi showed minimum biofilm formation and the least motility, while luxR164 -

Biofilm formation and multidrug-resistant Aeromonas spp. from wild animals.

OBJECTIVES: The 'One Health' concept recognises that the health of humans, animals and the environment are interconnected. Therefore, knowledge on the behaviour of micro-organisms from the most diverse environmental niches is important to prevent the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance. Wild animals are known to carry antimicrobial-resistant micro-organisms with potential public health impact. However, no data are available on the behaviour of sessile bacteria from wild animals, although antimicrobial resistance is amplified in biofilms. This study characterised the ciprofl

[Aeromonas caviae infection mimicking inflammatory bowel disease in a child].

A 10-year-old girl presented with a pancolitis with watery bloody diarrhoea. Her family history revealed the presence of inflammatory bowel disease. Whilst awaiting the diagnostic tests results, the stool cultures showed Aeromonas caviae. The disease resolved spontaneously. After 24 months there were no further signs of illness, notably no inflammatory bowel disease. This case represents a more severe form than the mild diarrhoea that is usually described in the literature. In a retrospective search of the hospital database, covering the previous 5 years, 188 patients with positive Aeromonas c

Aeromonas veronii Infection Induces Pyroptosis in Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides).

Aeromonas veronii, a prevalent Gram-negative bacterium in aquaculture, poses significant health risks to economically important freshwater fish species such as largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). This study investigates the role of pyroptosis, a highly inflammatory programmed cell death, in the immune response of largemouth bass to A. veronii infection. We characterised key pyroptosis-associated proteins, MsGSDMEa and MsGSDMEb, which harbour two conserved Gasdermin domains and are crucial in mediating pyroptosis. Following A. veronii infection, largemouth bass exhibited a robust upregulat

Feasibility of setting epidemiological cut-off values for Aeromonas spp.

This study analysed published data on the distributions of minimum inhibitory concentrations of a group of freshwater isolates classified as Aeromonas spp. with the aim of establishing whether they provided any evidence that epidemiological cut-off values set from these data would be unreliable. This group contained 233 isolates and included members of at least 11 species. The standard deviations (SDs) of the wild-type distributions for 10 antimicrobial agents were calculated for this multi-species group using the ECOFFinder and normalised resistance interpretation (NRI) algorithms. These were
